  • In early 2017 Yasmine and I met for a video interview with Disasterpeace aka Richard Vreeland. The artist talks about his work for movies such as "It Follows" and game scores like "FEZ". And he gives a rare live performance!

I had no idea this gem was laying about. Really happy to see him around in LA pursuing his dreams. Rich is so profound I love hearing him talk, he seems to have near infinite observations of his process and how he thinks with others. I wrote this comment while I watched the vid, pausing to take notes. Sorry if this is super long, figure you might enjoy my stream of thoughts.
Really cool to hear his upbringing and different musical skills come together for the sake of utility in tech. I grew up feeling the same, always wanting to make game music or band music on my own but never knowing how.
I always felt chiptune was Rich's most pure form of self expression that has matured over the years through his own sound design ventures, into deeper sounds. The fundamentals of sound design across many genres use sin, triangles, saws, squares, noise in a variety of forms.
Figuring out his own persona and fascination for almost like identities through masks, for me I resonate with a lot as a kid. I'd make animal or eagle masks to pretend I had both killed and understood whomever I wore to embody them or become a familiar. I also take a duality approach to my names. I'd have VetNovice both a caretaker of animals, Veteran, and a Novice, for example.
I identify with his fan's expectations a lot, and think it really interesting he referred to his relationship as automatic. I never though of it like that but it's true. I try to do more what I like and have people respond to me rather than fulfilling an empty dialogue by pleasing fans.
Also glad he's not concerned with names but more with his own actions and doings! Strong core. I don't want to be tied to my own identities at times either, which is why I shed myself so much from them and form new personas or characters.
Rich is ecclectic. Ranging from his blog to his favorites, he's into some deep shit. One of my favorite resources has been Triad Universe here on CZcams!
I like his bottom up approach to music by trying to figure out the essence of what he's trying to convey and working his way through that. I understand Rich too about being prolific, I feel like I spend too much time watching videos not enough time composing, even though I'm in the hundreds of songs. After a certain point it's less about the number more about the rate of big bodies of work I feel.
The thrill of posting is great. Better out than in. And people can digest all your work if they're committed. I oughta take from this and just dump all of it out somewhere.
Game development for me is that hamster wheel, and I love it yet burn out from it. Being an animator, it's a grind. Rest is so key, from body to mind. Without it no progression can be made. I totally agree with this.
I understand how lyrics can be seen more as poetry than music. I often listen to music without lyrics to understand better how it plays.
Good to see him working with Alex Preston, and glad to hear Alex is in good enough health to make a Sequel. Glad to see Under the Silver Lake published too.
Haha, long comment. I've been a fan for a while. I normally reserve myself from saying much but this is an incredible video. I can't thank you enough for sharing this. I hope these mini responses to each tidbit were fun. =]

Using a DAW = more options = more diverse, creative, and (arguably) better music
