Once I noticed that one rogue beard hair, that's all I could see
+Daniel Manning yep, that little guy was out of hand
Well now i have to fire my make up team!!!!
Daniel Manning You're just jealous that real men like Mr. Lovell and myself have to worry about stray beard hairs screaming for attention.
That and it was a gray hair too...
Yeah. I felt the urge to want to pluck it.
As a lady shooter, I can’t thank you enough for breaking down the attack mentality and the elbow rotation.
I can hit the target zones, but I’ve been striving to get the shot pattern closer.
After I watched your video, I went back to the range and made these adjustments. And wouldn’t you it, my shot pattern is tighter now!😃
Thank you again!😊💚
Look up Jim Greg's videos he's taught many police forces an militaries around the world
@Stefan Bajic 😐
@Stefan Bajic no one laughed though
These were Solid tips, I tried it and HAD to come back and give my thanks 🙏🏿
I’m relatively new to shooting and I literally tried this today at the range and I admit this helped me . Especially the elbows my accuracy improved much over the last time
Man I love this guy. Just the way he presents himself, down to earth and really talks to you through the camera. Great job. Would love to meet you one day when I'm in the states
+African Safari Films thanks bro
His confidence speaks volumes, sign of a knowledge educator
Dude is hella and alpha!
Yup. He's a hoot.
Taken a number of his courses. Great teacher and even more fun to be around. Worth a trip to take one ....
This was a GREAT video! I'm 5'10 and 240 lbs... and 50 yo. I grew up with guns and then locked them up for a couple of decades (for the most part) while my kids were in the house. Now I'm an empty nester and getting back into handgun self defense (9mm strikers) and I was amazed at how many bad habits I managed to clean cobwebs off of. This video accelerated my rust-removal AND helped refresh the importance of solid mechanics.
Liked, shared, subscribed, and highly recommended to others!
When he started talking about stance and the fighting mindset, I loved how every time he aimed the sights were either under his eye.
This is (around) the fifth time I've watched this video. When I'm having a "not so hot" day on the range, I use it as one of my "go to" instructional video texts. Very basic, but very solid info.
"Who's the most dangerous man in this room??"
"I dunno, perhaps that little skinny librarian built guy."
"Yeeup."
@its yeshua not jesus so get over it What????
Do you not understand my comment??
@its yeshua not jesus so get over it ...but John Wick is legit, I mean Keanu Reeves really puts in the work to send lead down range along with taking CQC courses. He's no SF, but he's better than the average Joe.
It’s the quite guy in the corner you have to worry about !
Definitely mongoloid grip man. Once you see mongoloid hands, best to just run.
@@LRRPFco52 haha. I taught martial arts for a long time and I always said "I don't want to get in a fight with a mechanic or a farmer because those are the guys that have the absolute strongest hands, which make Rock hard fists and gorilla strong grip. Nope.
Watching the intro I realized something.... You're not a man... you're a turret
+Erik Golden hahahaha
John Lovell dude just so you know this is by far the best CZcams channel ever
Yep. This and Garand Thumb. Top 10 in my sub-100 subscriptions.
Beast comment
polishjerk yes Garand thumb and John are my top 2
Thank you for all the information and all the things that you do to help make our country and it's citizens more able to defend ourselves and others
I wanted to say after I watched your video, my wife and I went out to the range. I’m 5’ 9” 205 and I incorporated what I watched, and I have to say it helped. Sharing with my wife about leaning forward and her stance, one foot back. Even helped her. We were shooting a 9mm. She even said after words she really enjoyed shooting. I tried the twist of the left arm, it was a little strange getting use to the angle of the gun, however so slight, but it worked at least I feel it did. Thanks for sharing your wisdom, and thanks for your service.
Great video man, I'd love to see a video on trigger control for guys with huge hands, where to place your finger and so on
Honest Outlaw you and poet are my favorite channels man!
Short and sweet. I’m going to try the elbow trick next time I shoot. You didn’t mention that choosing a larger weapon will help with recoil. Size does matter!!
OFFANON!!!
Crazy to be here in 2021 and see this comment from such an accomplished shooter and seeing how big your YT channel is now. Awesome stuff.
Trigger control is simple, when your finger is on the trigger you mean to kill, take it off when your not gonna kill.. big hands or little hands, guns don’t shot themselves... I spent over 20 years professional dealing with guns and I have never pop a round off. Cause when I shot I put my finger on the trigger when I am not shorting I take it off... I trained that why for years!!!
Yes, that left elbow cant is a great help in leveling-off that recoil. Also, I've found that pushing my trigger hand (fist) forward and at the same time pulling the other hand inward I create somewhat of a front anchor that helps in the overall stabilization of the handgun.
You cured my recoil issue! Cured it! Thank you for your service! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
@Jerry Grauert I think you slide your thumb forward more, that's what works for me at least
@@ligmasurvivor997 Dude your name killed me
I enjoy John's videos, his high energy style is easy to watch and he keeps the video's short and sweet without the unnecessary chatter of many other youtube host. He clearly knows what he's talking about and doesn't need to brag his accomplishments. Easily one of my favorite youtube channels..
You not only give good tips, but you make me smile. It's nice to see happy, not angry instructor.
Thank you :)
"*Thanks so much guys*" No, thank YOU, I'm too poor to fly out of Alaska for good training so I have to rely on online sources and it's great that you have been willing to share this stuff. Hopefully this will clean up my times at a pistol competition tomorrow.
WOW the elbow roll is great advice. Gonna practice with this tomorrow before my match on Wednesday. Wish me luck!
I love these tips. And this man just seems like a good dude. Subscribed.
I'm pretty small statured (5'10", 155). I took my EDC (Springfield XDS 9mm) and my RIA 1911 to the range; I used these techniques with both pistols. There was a noticeable reduction in muzzle flip with both pistols, but most impressive was that the XDS barely moved in my hands at all. Thanks for the great instructional videos, Mr. Lovell.
5' 10" 155 is small statured?
Where the hell do you live? Norway? Lol
@@2S1L3NT that's what I'm saying
I have found that rotating (camming) both elbows creates even greater control.
I’ve been watching a bunch of your videos, and just took the plunge and subbed! Now I’m not new to firearms, but not as proficient as you, thanks for sharing your knowledge on firearm handling and safety, JMHO, your probably the best on CZcams!
Your elbow roll tip is definitely one of the best tips I've gotten. I'm completely amazed at the difference it has made. Can't thank you enough. 💪🏼
I figured out number 2 after countless times of bewilderment at the range. Thanks for the affirmation. Military pistol training isn't always as in depth as it could be. God Bless
I remember the first time I really thought I could shoot well, and a guy in my first ccw course complimented me, and offered a kind suggestion that I move my trigger finger slightly on the trigger to change the dynamic of my trigger control, and I shot my first one hole group at 7 yards. It’s amazing the impact a little experience can have on you’re performance. The elbow trick is absolutely something I’ll have to play with next time I’m at the range, thanks for making the video and sharing.
Always helps when your willing to take advice too
That elbow tip made a world of a difference! Thank you so much. It definitely helps a ton and removes a majority of the harm from a sloppy trigger pull.
I'm trying to guide my granddaughter
Into her first handgun.
I've been monitoring different sites for years watching and continue to learn from the best.
Watching you put your philosophy into visual motion allong with the ability to explain is amazing!.
Simple, factual, something you can sink your teeth into and put into practice the next time you spend time at the range.
Thanks again
I love johns sense of humor. Seems like such a chill dude
Thanks for the tip about the elbows! I actually have a birth defect in my elbow that keeps it from being able to rotate. But I tried it in dry practice and I think I'll be able to rotate it just enough to put the pressure you talk about on it. Can't wait to try it in love fire. Thanks for all your content, especially the mindset videos!
When you present your gun even without shooting I can just feel the connection and focus and the switch flip from poet to warrior and I’m reminded how lucky I am that I’m not a terrorist against John Lovell.
But seriously, the content is great, so much solid info in all your videos, plus they are so fun to watch. Thank you for your service!
I watched your video many many moons ago. Yesterday I was at the range shooting my Ruger mark 4. 22 LR and noticed that I was doing exactly as you demonstrated. Now 22 doesn’t have a lot of recoil but I was amazed at how quickly I was able to get my sites back on target and I was shooting 😊Pretty darn quick as well great demo.❤
Always great reinforcement and tips.Rotating both my elbows in such a fashion is something to which I have paid inadequate attention!
This video is gold! More videos like this please. I know you'll be around Orlando soon, when might be the next time? Would love to save up for one of your courses. I think I can learn a great deal from your instruction.
John, you are my hero. I train daily with you. Although I have been a shooter since childhood the consequences old age and health issues have compromised my skill. I refuse to give up and will always be a “protector”. Bless you🙏🏼
I am new to your channel but I really enjoy watching. I am former USAF medic from the 80's . The things you talk about a refresher for me. Love it!!! Please keep it going. Thanks
"This was helpful. I know it was" you crack me up man lol
@Johnlovell the tips, you gave, work great. I really didn't get the elbow one for a bit, it took about 50 rounds to get it right and used to the elbow up. Tips work great. Great video.
Great stuff John. I learn more from 10 mins of your videos than I do with an hour of instruction at the course. Need to up my basics, but would love to check out your training some day. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
Thanks for these insights for the basics, both for those new to it and for those of us who simply haven't had the opportunity to shoot in a while. Your work really helps me keep me thinking about my skills, even if I can't practice them at the moment.
Great tips John !! Not many instructors out there who are providing this type of information . Sometimes it's the little "tweaks " in technique they make all the difference in the world 👍👌
+Anthony Luisi attend a class and let your mind pop
John , I plan on attending without question !!!👍👌
John Lovell hey John I just took a 5 class NRA pistol class and the instructor kept preaching relax your grip relax your grip almost to the point where I felt it was recoiling too much, which from alot of videos I watch on YT from high level instructors seems to be the complete opposite of what my instructor was saying. Just how relaxed should a pistol grip be? Rob Latham on one of his vids says to grip it as tight as you can, ita like who to believe??
+Michael Edwards the instructor you had is most likely not worried about fighting (stress + speed + accuracy) and is instead interested in recreation (accuracy only). I wouldn't say he's 'wrong' unless he breathes a word about defense or fighting
It's on our list of things to accomplish next year. Location and time constraints prevent us this year, but we are subscribers/supporters and very much enjoy what you present and represent.
Keep up the excellent work, John.
This is one of the best videos I've ever seen on the subject of managing recoil. Thank you sir!
+JohnnyUtah71 then share on FB por favor

It’s interesting cause everything you covered is exactly what I’ve learned to implement without any training.. since I’ve started going out shooting, I’ve learned on my own. And it all works perfectly for me.. one guy at the range asked me why I put my foot behind me and tilt to the side. I told him it helps me gain control of the gun more than any other stance. So he tried it. And he said it was actually a more comfortable and confident stance he has ever tried. I also took a buddy of mine out and taught him what’s works best for me... and he now can hit the target a lot better than before.. thank you for the video.
I needed this video! I tend to shoot down to the left when shooting 5 yds or more. Ive always tried tightening my grip more and lean forward but I was never really pleased with the results. Yesterday, I went to the range to put more time in and I nailed it. All I needed to do was roll my elbows in. It was an awesome rush. Loved it! Too bad I ran out of ammo but I'm excited for my next trip.
Thank you for this helpful tip that may one day save my life.
Keep it up and always stay safe.
The camming of the elbows. John, this is what I've been looking for. I just subscribed so hard
Came for recoil management tips
Stayed for white beard hair comments....
Had not noticed the rebellious single white hair . . . now it's all I see!
Omg! I did not notice at first 🤣🤣😂😅
I dunno what it is but I've watched tons of how to videos on shooting and this is the only channel that really gets me focused and paying attention.
Some great tips, thanks for sharing!
The correct term is pronation of the left forearm. Great advice, thanks!
7:00 - Jedi John Lovell: "This Was helpful"
7:02 - Me: Man this was helpful.
"It's just what I do and I get to do whatever I want" jajajajaja simply great. Excellent video.
Best insight I've found. Now I notice that other instructors are including or referring to these tips but not one emphasizes as clearly as you do. You are the POET, my friend.
I stumbled into this video and found John is so down to Earth and love his videos. New subscriber here.
Thanks and welcome!
Same
I notice when you present, you're right eye dominant (our left). The can't produced from rolling your weak hand elbow helps bring the sights to that side. What about those of us that have a right strong hand, but a left dominant eye? It really screws with me switching from my rifle scope to my pistol sights. Also the transition from shooting with one eye to both eyes open.
Great tips! Thank you John!
I love the fact you answer and engage with your viewers! Not many people do
I've rewatched this dozens of times
This is pure gold!
Heck yeah!
I learned these techniques from Bob Vogel's DVD a few years ago and have passed it on to a lot of people. It always seems to help but has made the biggest difference for an elderly gentleman I shoot with.
Great tip #2, John!
"it's just what I do, and I can do what I want"
Amen
I've been jonesing for a new video lol. And this is great because I'm hitting the range after work!
hopefully with these tricks you can hit a target now, not just the range...
Watched this after a mediocre range session and tried it today. Made a real difference already. Thanks!
Thanks for the tips John.
Thanks John. I really appreciate all the tips we get from trained pros like yourself, in this crazy world we need all the help we can get. GOD Family & Country.
good stuff
Jip Pl what in the hell do you contribute? All I've seen of you at this point is bitching, so I guess that makes you the bitch of the gun community. Nothing but top notch content at Mr.gunsandgearchannel. don't watch it though itd go over your head
Mrgunsngear Channel your videos are good stuff too!!!
Sheesh someone seems a little triggered! If you get that mad over someone saying "good stuff" I bet you live in a van down by the river!
@Jip Pl complaining about a grown man saying "good stuff".
U want to talk about it?
Hi
Thanks for posting!
Keep em comming!
So I watched this video a 2nd time prior to going out to shoot a couple of rounds and tried out these 2 tricks and they really do help. I had my back leg all the way back and my front leg fully forward. I leaned forward and torqued my left elbow so that my gun is canted a bit. And I've noticed as soon as I fired that my shots are more consistent and the only thing rocking back and fourth is my gun and not my body as if you were standing with your legs side to side. Also, I took your advice and got really agressive with it and really leaned forward even further as my left elbow is canting the gun a bit and found that my shots are even more spot on where ever I point my sights.
So thank you very much for all your help and tricks and I look forward to your upcoming videos! :)
Can't wait to take a class from you. I have been trying this at the range, it's worked well. Still getting some flip, I need some paid training I think. I guess I can't become john wick like from you tube alone ;)
Where is the link to the grip video?
I can't wait to try this out at the range. I'm a little dude and a beginner to pistol shooting. I like the fight presentation. I'll be saying it to myself in the lane for a good hour ripping off rounds. Good video. When you first posted it I didn't watch it because I wasn't shooting pistol yet but now I'm going back through all your vids for some awesome tips and advice! Thank you and keep it up.
Thanks for keeping it short and to the point.
Man, I wish I could see John Lovell on the Jocko podcast, it would be the perfect storm of philosophy/warrior mindset!
Ken Clague “GET AFTER IT!”
4:27 One of the best explanations I’ve heard. “FIGHT. Defend.” Love it.
Thanks for the tip, very useful.
Thanks for the pointers they helped keep them coming.
Ok...... LOVE the advice, but am distracted by the single gray hair on the beard...... ;-)
ugh I know
It's like having a booger hanging and your friend (in this case, camera operator) doesn't tell you until AFTER!!! Anyway, greatly appreciate the videos and faith!
John Lovell what holster do you use?
Sven Lara He has a video on the holster he uses
If you were looking at me you would be distracted by the fact that my moustache is mostly grey like my beard, but actually is growing from my nose! Yep all nose hair! Live with that and quit bitching! C. A. B. W.
God damn....I tried the whole "camming the elbow" technique, and it's seriously like shooting a different gun. Awesome advice as usual John, keep up the great work!!
This is some great tips thank you!
Thanks for the video . Great info.
Well I must say, the cant on the support side is something I haven't heard of. Now I'm curious! 🤓
So you're only torquing the "support" side elbow. That makes a lot more sense, I've heard you say that you're flipping your elbows in past videos, and I've tried that, it's just that the gun elbow makes it a funky grip for me, if I flip both elbows.
Very helpful, thanks for the tips!
Excellent video. The right balance of humility, humor and education. Well done.
A well groomed lethal librarian!
i love you John Lovell
no...i....love....U
Great info brothaman! Definitely going to have to take your classes in the future!!!
Thank you. We love all your videos. They have been a tremendous help for us. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge.
"So you're ready to FIGHT!!!...you're ready to defend...." 🤣🤣🤣
Your hair is absolutely amazing sir:)
+Tony Hagarman its priorities. I almost practiced shooting more, but the hair was the better investment... ;)
I love the free advice that you give on here !!!!!! Always helps and sometimes it's even funny
Awesome vids..learning much from this channel! Great job guys!!
Also if you ever teach a class in Columbus, Ohio or anywhere in Ohio I'm there
What light are you running on that Glock? Fantastic tips.

Thanks John!
Sounds good! Thanks John.
Me during the intro: he’s not shooting that fast...
Me again: oh, that was slow mo. Never mind
Hahahaha
Mag dump
Just left the range and that cant of the off-hand elbow is exactly what ruined my day...not doing it, of course. Now I'm itching to go back in a couple days. Thanks, John!
Great video! Straight forward and to the point. Thanks!
John, my shooting abilities just increased drastically entirely due to your video. I never type comments, but I just wanted to you to know how much you helped me. Thank you so much!
