you should do brilliant gardens afterwards to restore sanity. also austro terf is so awful and damaging for the enviroment. the best thing would be to keep the normal grass if space allows and if it doesn't, put a load of pebbels on the ground and use plant pots with actual onest to cod flowers in them. unless you are 80 years old or have a physical disability there is no excuse not to not use plastic grass. I cant even belive in this day and age its even allowed. The best thing to do and the easiest thing to do is to hardly mow your grass at all or at least a section of grass, that way the wildlife get to benefit from your garden and you get to benefit from the wildlife. a plastic garden is a sad, dead garden. Sow some wildflower seed native to your area and watch it thirive. don't just listen to me though, there are better guides on the internet than a random guy. i recomend terms like 'rewilding your garden'
I genuinely really did enjoy this. I’m autistic and love gardening so it really did just make me happy. I mean the gardens were very sad but gardening being discussed is a win :D.
Also, these gardens were so bad anything looks better. I would take ANY real lawn filled with dandelions over that horrible fake grass any day of the week!

i agree george, i absolutely hate it when people take beautiful old houses and give them black boring windows and paint them all white. same with the gardens, i'd much prefer a lovely grassy garden with tons of flowers and stuff...some of these "gardens" look very depressing. if these people are so adamant on paving over their lovely garden, maybe we should trade and they can have my tiny concrete backyard
I hate plastic grass with a passion. I have front and back lawns, they're not massive but they are real grass. Imagine how hot it must get in the summer on plastic grass 🤮
In southern California, we're not really allowed to water lawns because of the constant drought, so people either have ugly astroturfing or a completely different type of garden: "desertscaping." Luckily, at least in my area, astroturfing is rare enough to stick out like a sore thumb because everyone goes the desertscaping route - even the actual city! It looks nothing like a 'normal' garden but it's really beautiful in its own unique way when done right. Admittedly, it's unusable as a play area for kids, but it's fine if you're not gonna be using it for that. I remember when I first moved down here, I was absolutely fascinated by all these weird new plants that I'd either never seen before or had rarely seen in-person. Plus, with deserts having the (largely undeserved) reputation of being wastelands, you'd probably be surprised at how lush it can look. There are some very drought-resistant bushes with vibrant flowers that are in bloom year-round. Thought I'd share since it's one of the coolest things about the place I live, and not many people are familiar with it even just a few hours away in some directions. So I'm sure you probably don't see it in England.. you guys certainly don't have to worry about a lack of rain when planning your gardens!
It baffles me that in an era where people are wracked with anxiety over the state of the planet we all suddenly decide to start paving over our lawns with plastic.
Good take up horticulture more usefull its not hard I've seen em drawn up on ciggy boxes im sorry pointless degree 😂 atleast with horticulture your gonna know exactlly the best plants to match for what climates and what natives makes gardens netter
I don't think words will do it justice But I lived with people that had a tiny garden, but it was so beautiful! It was two tiered with a small water feature, there was flowers and stuff everywhere, this sorta red wood gazebo thing but it was hidden behind all these bushes and flowers. It was a tiny garden, yet it didn't feel cluttered and messy, it was so beautiful!
I saw not one garden in this video, they are all just yards, or compounds. It would be like driving into your local Tesco's car park and declaring "what a lovely garden this is" they all have the same amount of concrete and cheapness
The reason most people have fake grass is because their lawn doesn't get enough sun to have a nice natural lawn which is quite a common problem with new builds.
As an ex landscaper im going to stick up for some people in these gardens. Some people work alot and dont have time to prune the plants or water them. I think in an ideal world if time wasnt a factor gardens would be full of plants everywhere. But facts are wages are terrible so people work extra hours and dont have time so they go for easy maintenance which is why some look bland but very functional. Most older generations would have these kind of garden puirely becuase they arnt as physically able anymore.
Living on a new build estate myself, all of these gardens looks like they’re from my neighbours and I think that says something about British architecture
recently sat through a presentation on garden history (Im taking a highschool-level gardening class) and even the most bland and boring historical periods had more going on than whatever the hell these people are doing. monasteries in the middle ages were not allowed to have gardens for pleasure but they would have little areas with useful herbs and usually some form of cross design for a pathway, the baroque loved big bland lawns but at least they had intricate hedges and fountains. these gardens just make me sad, it's depressing what people do with their outdoors spaces, you could at the very least use the space for something, like the one with the football equipment brings some form of joy to the people living there but the rest are so very useless smh
I can't get behind astro turf gardens, they look so sterile it's awful. George is so right, flowers and shrubs. My lawn spends a lot of time in shade and the soil is very sandy, the lawn isn't brilliant, but it's full of lovely weeds, makes a great texture, looks nice and natural
I think the fake grass is the biggest problem, It looks so shit, especially when it gets old and has been swept one way. However, I think it makes sense for kids to play on. Cant get wrecked when it's wet etc... My own garden, If i owned a house would probably be worse than all these. I'd have plain tarmac with planters made from sleepers around the border, but that's because I'd be using my garden as a car park for multiple project cars/ financial mistakes.
@@liamholcroft7212if you have big dogs their feet slightly sink into the mud and then they carry it into the house, especially when its been raining. helps to keep everything cleaner all year round. plus the more expensive fake grass options can look nice if they’re complimenting the rest of the garden, and brushed properly when laid

I usually stand on the deck and throw their toys from there because I don’t want to get my feet dirty. Maybe there's layers of fluffy grass on the trampolim garden, so if they fall, they don't hurt themselves, the trampolim should've been bigger, like that, the garden looks empty
The answer to all these plastic gardens and astro turf is simple. For the home owners it's low maintainence. People can't be bothered to now lawns and water plants these days. When you have a big garden that you can't maintain just bulldoze it and lay down patio / decking and astro turf and never have to worry about gardening again. For developers is cheap as chips to build new builds on mass like this. No need to to contract landscapers to fill out the gardens with flower, lay fresh soil for fresh grass turfs. Modernism at its most extreme. Functional, bland low maintainence, low effort required.
What bothers me about the paving is, that all the stone bits are just more work to clean than just plain grass. Because grass doesn't need cleaning, you just mow it occasionally. And as you said, paving part of your garden only makes sense if you intend to have things stand on it like a grill or some furniture, but leaving it empty just looks dead. And the lack of flowerbeds. I know, you need to water the plants from time to time, but you have a house with a garden, wating the plants in your garden should be the least of your worries.
There is nothing I hate more than gardens with little to no plants in them. Paved over, artificial grass, all that is my special hate. I wouldn't buy a house like that. Before I even start about how incredibly damaging that is to the environment, just even for my own mental health I really REALLY hate them.
