    Even listening to this audio on studio-quality headphones and nearfields, it doesn’t do justice to the difference between the XR IR’s and comparable traditional IR’s - even the Ownhammer Rock Box sounds beam-y and narrow in comparison. And TwoNotes and Celestion dynamic IR’s are now officially outdated compared to XR’s. Bravo guys, don’t know how you did it but these finally unlocked my in-the-box digital sounds and made them actually fun to play.

      @@Tone_Factor I know you’re not going to give away proprietary information, but I’m struggling to figure out how you did this. The XRIR’s make all my other IR’s sound like am radios, but it can’t be just good eq’ing. You don’t mention any similarities to TwoNotes or Celestion dynamic IR technology yet there must be some dynamic component, yet there can’t be because they’re straight wav files. These also beat the UA Ox sounds handily.

    Ok, I’ll be honest. I’ve always thought IRs were stupid and thought, “why would anyone use IRs? The stock cabs are just fine, no one can tell a difference”. I have a QC and have been happy with the stock cabs. However I saw everyone raving about these XR IRs, so I thought I’d finally give it a try.
    It’s not a life-changing difference, but it’s pretty close to being that. It made my QC come alive in a way I didn’t know it needed. Best IRs I’ve tried hands down!

    I feel like the quad cortex standard cab is better. It sounds more like a close capture cab where as the xr sounds more like what your ear hears in a room. For my taste I feel the standard cabs would fit better in most mixes with the bass where as the xr sounds like I would be removing most of those boomy lows that guitarists like to hear but producers like to remove.

    • @raptor74707

      100%. It sounds like a lot of post processing going on with these so called XR IRs (potentially EQ, compression, exciters to add harmonics). Some of the IR offerings account for this exact issue and the those IRs sound thin in isolation. For instance Two Notes IRs. But they work sit very well in the mix, and you do not have to put a low filter to your guitar in the console.

    I have an idea for you two. An IR is essentially just a hyper detailed EQ curve that represents a mic in front of a speaker. Could you create your own IR of a speaker that doesn't actually exist but that represents what you think the perfect speaker would sound like? So instead of copying a celestion, you could create a real Tone Factor Speaker IR that represents what you two experts think is the ideal speaker for P&W.

    • @Tone_Factor
      @Tone_Factor  Před 11 měsíci

      Thanks for the feedback! I don't think there is necessarily "ideal" speaker for P&W... it really just depends on what sort of vibe and tone you are going for which varies from person to person. • @raptor74707
      @raptor74707 Před 10 měsíci

      In theory yes, or you can find a pretty flat condenser mic to do your recordings to eliminate classic mic characteristic (eq) as much as possible (It won't be supper flat but you can live with it). Some mic manufacturers provide the frequency response of their mics on the internet which you can use to put an EQ to do micro adjustments to make it flatter. Remember those measurements are from 1m distance at a certain db. However, there are a lot of other parameters in place such as the room that your amp is in. So hearing just the cab is not what you want, it is the sound in that room that you are after, and that requires some experiments and different mic set-up and capturing techniques.

      Yes! All of our new helix presets will be built off of our XR IRs since they are a big step up from tone matched IRs. We will likely be rebuilding and redialing our currently released presets using these new XR IRs since they sound so much better. Because of the massive amount of time that will take and for the fact that they include new IRs, they will be entirely new versions for sale. As always, if any of our current presets break or need a correction to function and sound as initially designed, those will always be free updates.

      Most likely both! But not sure when I will get to a new preset build. You can absolutely buy a pack and load them in any presets you wish. The beauty of these universal XR IRs is you can buy a pack and use it on ANY platform with ANY amp and ANY amp settings, unlike tone matched IRs that have to be paired with the amp, settings, and platform they were tone matched to to sound correct.

    I’ve been really successful running KENYON REED’s signature patch mixed with my own adjustments to maximize the pod go! And loving it. Want to try some of these out but only want to spend 20 right now…. Which one would you suggest???
    I’m guessing the JMI 30/6?
    I have been really successful with snap shot 1 being a huge swell no amp/cab
    2 having one perfect thick clean tone
    Using stomp box mode to turn off effects if not needed
    3 more of a edge of breakup for my dryer rhythm tone
    And 4 big lead tone with all effects in.
    Is there any specific IR I should try?

    @Tone_Factor When will these XR IR’s be sold within a comprehensive setup? Are you guys looking to integrate these into a new “bethel presets”. I have a helix floor and have the current David Hislop Bethel patch. All of our new presets will be built off of these XR IRs since they are such a level up from tone matched and our original DH IRs. Not sure how soon that will happen through - we are going to be working on more XR IR packs (4x12’s, etc).

    @400_billion_suns Před 11 měsíci +1

    2:15 You can’t “push” an IR, no matter who made it out or how it was made. IRs are simply an impulse response, which is linear *by definition* . What that means is that providing a louder or quieter input to an IR changes nothing except the volume coming out of the IR.
    Effectively, all an IR is, is a very detailed EQ curve. Any differences you hear from one to the other is simply due to the shape of that curve.
    This is not my opinion. This is the mathematical reality of what an impulse response is, and how it works.

    • @KenyonReed2
      @KenyonReed2 Před 11 měsíci +4

      That's correct, although when we say push, we're not necessarily saying you can push the IR to break up simply by increasing clean dB into it so that it reacts differently outside of the linear capture that it is. But at a minimum with the way we designed it, it is interacting with the drives and boosts we are using pushing in to the *amp* paired with the *XR IRs* to sound and feel like a real amp and speaker would. These XR IRs have given an extremely sweet and convincing result, as the video demonstrates compared to the stock cab IRs that often lack clarity and harmonic detail.

    • @400_billion_suns
      @400_billion_suns Před 11 měsíci

      @@KenyonReed2 An IR is an IR. And due to the fixed sample length limitations of the units you’re using these in, it’s not possible to change their frequency resolution (“harmonic detail”). I’m not trying to be a jerk; just trying to cut through the marketing schpeel and call a spade a spade. I’m also not saying they don’t sound good - they might sound great! - but this is being achieved simply by boosting certain frequencies and cutting others within the IR, because that’s all you can actually do with a 2048-sample IR.

      @@400_billion_suns We appreciate the classroom definition. From our many, many, hours of real-world experience in engineering and testing IRs that we have either prototyped and shelved or brought to market, there are things outside of the classroom (and forums) to be learned about IR creation and making them sound and feel real🫡 An IR may be an IR, or a Spade a Spade, but not all are created equal and we now have the Ace ♠️

      @@400_billion_suns It’s not a marketing tactic. We’re simply showcasing what it [is] doing. In theory, what you’re saying makes sense. But in practice it doesn’t pan out as simply as you’re saying. It actually worked what we did. That’s why we’re stunned by the outcome of these IRs. While I appreciate your attempt to be a realist, it’s simply unbased.
      I agree with you that they are linear, but there’s more you can do to make an IR feel alive, and we found out how and show that in this video 🤙🏻
