Tiger tanks in action at Kursk during the Summer of 1943

- Along with the Tigers rolling about the Russian steppes, interesting mix of Soviet armor appears in this footage. Most of the former featured are likely Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 503 vehicles, the unit served well during the Battle of Kursk suffering relatively few combat losses and claiming over twenty Soviet tanks destroyed for every Tiger lost. At 1:00 the vehicle near the camera is likely a Befehlspanzerwagen III command tank with a "sternantenna" aerial for its long range radio, with these lighter tanks frequently working in concert with their heavier counterparts. At 1:17 the troops sheltering near the Tiger's tracks appear to regret their choice of location as they are hit by the powerful muzzle blast from the tank's 88mm gun.
Among the casualties the T-34/76 unsurprisingly features heavily including the then-current Model 1943, an example of which is seen burning at 1:08. The two open hatches are typical of the variant and are also the feature they led it to be nicknamed the "Mickey Mouse".
At 1:31 several knocked out examples of US-built M3 Lee tank appear, while this model arrived in the Soviet Union at a time when any tank was better than no tank, it was not popular with crews. Its armor was inadequate even against 50mm high velocity guns, and by the time it saw action the even more effective 75mm guns had been introduced. Needless to say it would have been no match for the Tiger even at distances exceeding two kilometers.
At 1:40 a T-34/76 appears sporting at least two penetrating hits, one each in turret and hull, and in the latter case what is interesting is that the impact has shattered the armor and broken the welds. This suggests that it was made too brittle, possibly due to a combination of lack of certain materials and inadequate heat treatment, issues that would go on to plague German armor as the war progressed. The next T-34 pictured has been torn apart at the seams, likely by an internal ammunition explosion.
At 1:51 a T-70 light tank appears with hull roof collapsed, and after it a US-built M3A1 Stuart. The former vehicle was of a slightly later generation than the latter with an edge in both armor and firepower, but the Red Army was unhappy with their performance on the battlefield and production of light tanks would be halted before the year was over. The Stuart carries an external fuel tank that substantially increased the vehicle's range while also being a considerable fire hazard in combat, especially as the vehicle used high-octane aviation fuel that was more flammable than the diesel used by most Soviet-built tanks.
At the end of the clip the remains of an armored train appear, almost certainly destroyed from the air, although there were some instances during WWII when trains were engaged by tanks.

There are people inside the Tanks
Was you mean...
A lot of them never made it out, too. Or at least, didn't make it long enough to reach safety.
I met a brutha who was a tank commander in the Gulf War. I asked him if HIS crew engaged another tank. They did and was first to shoot. He added, "and I don't want to know if there was anyone in there."

Great footage of the Tiger's in action. And a very interesting mix of Soviet and Lend-Lease, tanks, on the battlefield. As for the armoured train, the Soviets lost 2 trains about 5 days before the Battle of Kursk commenced. Both destroyed from the air on the 7th of July. These were the only 2 trains (officially) lost in 1943, (losses of armoured trains belonging to the NKVD were not usually reported), and belonged to the 58th Armoured Train Battalion, of the Soviet 60th Army. In 1941, the Soviets had lost 42 armoured trains, and another 45 more in 1942. After the loss of these 2 in 1943, there were no further total losses before the end of the war.
Notice how swiftly the tiger could rotate its turret and move on the battlefield. Tactically a fast tank. (strategically slow)

Wow! Amazing content!
I never considered that Soviet M3 Lees and Stuarts were present at Kursk. The Soviets had a habit of removing any evidence of Lend-Lease equipment from their war films - except for Studebaker US6 trucks, because many of them mounted Russian-made Katyushas. And I had never heard of armored trains being involved at Kursk, either. You learn something new every day (if you're not careful).
Yeah it's absolutely *WILD* how much effort was and is put into making WWII seem like it was 180° from what actually happened.
Никто ничего специально не удалял. Есть куча фотографий в газетах Стюартов из роты " Суворов".
Просто к 1943 году американских машин было еще очень мало, основной поток пошел в 1944.
It is probably because germans wanted to highlight american involvement in eastern front
However, there weren't much of lend lease tanks there and they weren't really liked by soviet tankers, so here it is why you dont see much of lend lease equipment in soviet tapes
However, you did see katyushas on american trucks (because they WERE liked and became iconic) and i saw photos of soviet marines using tommy guns
Very small numbers of M3 left during Kursk. Soviets soldier hate it because they already have T-34 which is much superior. The Airacobra fighter aircraft on the other hand got high praise by Soviet ace.
@@backpackpepelon3867 That's what I had presumed about the M3s at Kursk, but it's still nearly impossible to find Soviet images of LL Jeeps, tanks, or even the Airacobra, which I have read about but -once again - never seen in Soviet-made images.
Thanks for this 👍

@Better_Clean_Than_Green Totally correct. I know a fellow Army Vet = 82ABDiv who had a similar experience at Ft. Irwin.. his M240 firing position was within less than 20 meters off to the side on a M1A1 Abrams.. The muzzle blast collapsed his fighting position.

@@user-hi7oj4ju1t Lol you only think that because you grew up on that Soviet propaganda. No armor is supposed to crack, and the only time German armor ever got anywhere near this bad was at the very end of the war when they couldn't always get alloying metals. Soviets just never cared about their people to begin with.
Not only were their tanks armored with sub par steels before the U.S. started giving them basically all of their rolled steel for free, tanks like the T-34 didn't even have optica or stabilizers. Not to mention radios, climate control, etc. That's how so many T-34s were taken out by Panzer IIIs when on paper they should have been a bigger problem for Panzer IIIs.

The armour on the T-34 don't looked good , cracked hull . Only late war Germany had that , the experts always tell us . Maybe just another myth ha ? 😅
It is a well known fact that the quality of the russian armor wasn't very good. Especially in the early war. The russians threw everything they had on the advancing german forces to stop them. It was reported that, at the battle of Stalingrad some T34-s were missing their turrets, instead they were used as armored personnal carriers. They simply didn't have time to fit the turret. Whoever says, that only the german tanks had armor quality issues has a biassed opinion. Same goes for the drivetrain.

Crossing open plains/fields/prairies in Soviet tanks must of not only sucked but been incredibly harrowing.
Даже бронепоезду досталось.
Interesting tid bit. Germans called the T-34 ober 43 with the hexagonal turret, the T-43. Thinking that they were a whole new tank.
Comparatively few Tigers were lost during Kursk, despite their heavy involvement in the fighting and high kill scores.
Yeah, but the Russians in the comments think they wiped them out. Lol....they suffered heavier losses than the Germans
German combat cameramen produced the best footage from WW2. The US footage from Tarawa, Saipan, and the Pershing vs Panther in Cologne was very good but overall the German footage was tops.

It's funny for me to watch here... It's like the Russians lost the Battle of Kursk. In fact, all those German pnzers fled the battlefield as they were defeated and destroyed. And now we're beating these supposedly invincible Leopards and Abrams in the SWO.
Russia today has nothing to do with USSR. The Germany of today has nothing in common with the 3rd Reich. Russia is fighting NATO today in Ukraine, which is kind of ironic because Stalin allied with NATO in WW2 to defeat Germany. One of those ironies of history. Stalin screwed Putin. Hitler defeated NATO by 1941 in Europe and if it wasn’t for the eastern front, there would never have been a NATO in Europe today.
