SS Eastland Disaster...why did it happen? More with Capt. Darrell & Mutiny on the Eastland!

  • What caused the SS Eastland disaster? It's not an easy answer; there were several things that led up to its demise, including overloading of passengers and modifications that decreased its draft and made the ill-riding ship to be too top-heavy. But as we'll learn from Captain Darrell, the Titanic also played a roll...specifically from legislation that came on the other side of the sinking of the Titanic. We'll dive in during this final episode of the Eastland disaster...and we'll also share some other interesting stories, including Mutiny on the Eastland and the ship's afterlife in the United State Navy...all that and so much more. Thanks for your support!

    Thank you for another great video! I can never imagine how anyone could ever think a ship so riding high in the water and so thin and top heavy could be safe! Thanks for keeping the Eastland alive. I enjoy history and hope to help teach it or bring it to others one day, thank you. And as a football fan it really interested me when George Halas was supposed to be on that ship. Even though I’m a Packers fan, I’m still glad he didn’t go on the Eastland. Halas was actually one of the people who helped fund Lambeau Field. Thanks again!

    I enjoy watching Capt. Darrell . As a retired coal miner 37 years. We seen Official investigations on accidents & deaths before. Them officials are real good at spreading the blame all around trying keep everyone happy. I lost many friends in accidents we know really what happened. That why I think Darrell is correct on most if not all accidents. Experience is something you can’t buy or learn out of a book.

    Catching up on your videos and, as always, vey informative and entertaining. A anecdote on the subject of immigration, my mother’s family of Bohemian farmers had settled in a largely Czech community in Kansas - complete with stories of covered wagons, etc. My mother and her siblings had long suspected that my grandfather and many of the elders still spoke in their native language but all denied knowing it and were never heard speaking anything but English. One day, my mother and aunt happened into a room in the back of a feed or hardware store and a group of men, including my grandfather, were conversing in a language unknown to my mother & aunt. When the presence of these two girls was realized by these men they immediately ceased conversation and dispersed. It was later explained to my sister and aunt that these men were fiercely proud of their American “heritage” and deeply ashamed to have been discovered displaying any link to the old country. My, how times have changed…

    I cannot believe there hasn’t been a movie made about this! If I recall, the designer and engineer of the Eastland had no experience. He was a businessman. I’m sure the Titanic tragedy influenced larger vessels on the transatlantic routes, however, in smaller locales where there is more discrepancy in the supply and demand equation, you’re bound to have oversight. Now that more wealth has come to the Great Lakes (by wealth I mean resources and exploitation of resources) you’re likely to have less oversight and more red tape..but look at what happened to the Titan submersible! 😮

    • @HistoryMysteryMan
      @HistoryMysteryMan  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yes...it would be a very emotional and compelling movie, and unlike the story of the Mighty Fitz, we know exactly what happened with the Eastland...so the script would write itself, so to speak. Good point on the Titan. Oversight is more common when the almighty dollar is the backdrop. Thanks again, Penelope...HMM

    Great job Don and Darrell on the Eastland videos. So much to learn about this tragic sinking.
    A badly designed ship. Greed and the need to maximize profits, and of course poor decisions by the captain and crew.
    In addition to the extra weight of the life boats, they also strengthened the upper decks by ripping out the wood.....and then installing concrete as a decking material. Think of that weight!
    I vacation each summer in South Haven, MI. They have a historical marker along the Black River discussing the Eastland. And their fine Michigan Maritime Museum has a really cool large display right now called "Full Steam Ahead: The Golden Age of Great Lakes Passenger Steamships". I went through it last Summer.
    Thanks again guys. You make a great pair. I love when you two get together to talk ships. So how did you guys meet? However it happened, I'm certainly glad it did!

    • @HistoryMysteryMan
      @HistoryMysteryMan  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Thanks Chuck...great point on the added concrete. I didn't know about the stuff in South Haven...sounds like I'm going to have to make that trip this summer. Darrell and I met in 1984; we were both Captains on the passenger vessels Arawanna Queen and Arawanna Princess out of the port of Toledo. We lost touch, then I reached out to him a couple years ago because I remembered him telling me about his uncle who went down on the Fitz. Then, he showed up with his scruffy old beard, and the rest is history! HMM

      So many times we loose touch with former friends.....never to meet again. In your case, it was well well worth your effort to rekindle a friendship. Again, you two make for very interesting discussions when you get together.
      The Maritime Museum in South Haven, MI is so worth the visit. First class all the way. Geez, you could also visit a similar museum (Old Lighthose Museum) in Michigan City, MI on your way up to South Haven. You could then say you did a 'twofer'.@@HistoryMysteryMan

    Thank you for showing the photos to go with the story. Looking at the faces, the names, and the newspaper headlines haunts me. My heart goes out to the engineer, may he rest in the peace he so longed for, and so too the souls of all who were lost that day. Also the survivors of that day, and the witnesses and rescuers, all gone on to their reward by now. May the Lord not hold them accountable for any wrong they may have done after that day, if it was done out of human weakness caused by their horror at viewing this tragedy, as it happened and in the aftermath. I don't know how anyone could be of sound mind after seeing that. Maranatha!

    Excellent video. Hard to believe the Eastland was designed and built with such marginalized stability! Once again Corporate Greed led to her overloaded condition.
