  • Nestled on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, Victoria Falls stands as one of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders in the world. The Zimbabwean side of this majestic waterfall offers a unique and thrilling experience for adventurers and nature lovers alike. From breathtaking views to exhilarating activities, here’s everything you need to know about visiting the Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls.
    1. Introduction to Victoria Falls
Known locally as Mosioa Tunya, or "The Smoke That Thunders," Victoria Falls is one of the largest and most famous waterfalls on the planet. It spans 1.7 kilometers wide and plunges 108 meters into the Zambezi River gorge below. The sheer scale and power of the falls create an unforgettable spectacle, with mist and rainbows adding to its mystique and beauty.
    2. The Entrance: Victoria Falls Rainforest
As you enter the Victoria Falls National Park on the Zimbabwean side, you’re greeted by the lush Victoria Falls Rainforest. This unique ecosystem thrives on the constant mist from the falls, creating a verdant paradise with diverse plant and animal life. Take a leisurely walk along the well maintained trails, where you can encounter various bird species, small mammals, and a rich array of flora.
    3. Viewing Points: A Front Row Seat to Nature’s Spectacle
The Zimbabwean side boasts several prime viewing points, each offering a different perspective of the falls. These viewpoints are strategically located along a scenic trail that runs parallel to the edge of the gorge:
Devil's Cataract: The first major viewpoint offers a closeup view of the falls and the Zambezi River. The sheer force of the water cascading over the edge is truly mesmerizing.
Main Falls: This is the largest and most powerful section of Victoria Falls. The roar of the water and the towering plume of mist create an almost surreal atmosphere.
Horseshoe Falls: Named for its distinctive shape, this section provides a panoramic view of the falls and the gorge below.
Rainbow Falls: Known for the rainbows that often appear in its mist, this viewpoint is perfect for capturing stunning photographs.
Danger Point: True to its name, this viewpoint offers an exhilarating experience with breathtaking views and the sensation of being on the edge of the world.
    4. Activities: Thrills and Adventures
Victoria Falls is not just a visual marvel; it’s also a hub for adventure activities that cater to thrill seekers:
White Water Rafting: The Zambezi River below the falls is renowned for some of the best whitewater rafting in the world. Tackle the rapids and experience the adrenaline rush of navigating through the turbulent waters.
Helicopter Flights: Known as the “Flight of Angels,” a helicopter ride over Victoria Falls provides a bird’s eye view of this natural wonder. The aerial perspective is truly breathtaking and offers unparalleled photo opportunities.
Devil’s Pool: On the Zambian side but accessible via guided tours from Zimbabwe, Devil’s Pool allows brave visitors to swim in a natural infinity pool right on the edge of the falls.
    5. Local Culture and History
Victoria Falls town, located just a few kilometers from the falls, is rich in culture and history. Explore the vibrant local markets, where you can buy traditional crafts, jewelry, and souvenirs. Engage with the local communities and learn about their customs and traditions. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Victoria Falls Bridge, an engineering marvel completed in 1905, which connects Zimbabwe and Zambia and offers spectacular views of the falls and the gorge.
    6. Wildlife Encounters
The area around Victoria Falls is teeming with wildlife. A visit to the nearby Zambezi National Park offers opportunities to see elephants, lions, buffalo, and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Guided safaris and boat cruises on the Zambezi River provide excellent chances for wildlife viewing and birdwatching.
    7. Accommodation: Where to Stay
Victoria Falls town offers a range of accommodation options to suit every budget and preference. From luxury lodges and hotels that offer stunning views of the falls to budget friendly hostels and guesthouses, there’s something for everyone.
    8. Practical Tips for Visitors
Best Time to Visit: The falls are spectacular year round, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience. For the most dramatic views and highest water flow, visit during the rainy season (February to May). For better visibility and adventure activities like whitewater rafting, the dry season (June to September) is ideal.
Health and Safety: Make sure to take necessary health precautions, such as vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis.
Currency and Payments: The official currency is the Zimbabwean dollar, but US dollars are widely accepted. Credit cards are also accepted in most hotels and restaurants.
Travel Requirements: Check visa requirements for Zimbabwe and ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

We visited Victoria Falls in February 2023. It was an incredible time to go because the falls were at their most magnificent. The lush greenery and the sheer power of the water cascading down were absolutely breathtaking. If you ever get the chance to visit around that time, you're in for a treat!
