    Greetings from WV- It looks like you got some good stuff there. Im also an old school vet and a huge fan of good used mil surplus at a good price. The used stuff is way better than the Chinese knock off crap they are making these days. Those MRE's are interesting. I still have un-opened MRE's from the early 2000's and 3 complete MSS sleep systems. Good stuff here- thanks for sharing-

    That's a british PLCE bergen yoke.
    With the PLCE bergen rucksacks there's two sizes - medium and large. Unlike most other systems, those sizes describe the length of your spine and NOT the size of the ruck. One is longer and one is shorter (regarding the shoulder strap length and the inside frame), there is little to no difference in volume. That way you pick the "right" ruck for you by spine length / user size unlike for example medium and large ALICE where you pick the size of ruck by the amount of gear you want to put into them.
    Sadly, you often get the surplus PLCE bergens without the side pouches or if you get them, they often are reproductions that miss the upper and lower quick release buckles and are made of way thinner fabric.
    The originals have rather thick fabric (at least 1000 denier by the feels of it) and always the two zippers on the sides and two quick release ITW fastex female buckles (3/4 inch) as well as two male ones (3/4 inch) right on top of them on the top side of the pouch. On the bottom side there's a set of two ITW fastex female buckles (3/4 inch) as well as a vertical webbing strip sewn to the pouch with a male and female buckle (3/4 inch) to strap additional gear to the pouch itself.
    The yoke is a separate piece that I have so far only seen sold separately and they have two about one meter (~40inch) webbing straps with male fastex connectors (3/4 inch) on both ends (one sewn fast, the other adjustable) which often are missing (I bought several yokes cheaply and disassembled one for parts to sew myself the missing straps with some webbing bought seperately).
    The yoke also has a waist belt sewn to it that has 1 inch male and female ITW fastex buckles.
    For the pouches you can determine whether they are british PLCE bergen ones by checking the zippers: on these, the zippers are directed so, that you shove the metal "shoe" into the connector at the bottom and then move the slider up where it stays after zipped shut, on BOTH sides. On other bergen systems the zippers can point downwards or one pointing upwards and one pointing downwards (Berghaus retail bergens, I think). Also there's a dutch bergen that may have a different zipper size? I am not sure about that, but remember there were some compatibility issues with the different bergen ruck systems.

    i really do believe the MSS temp ratings now. i have been using my green patrol bag and black inner, in below 30° F no tent no tarp in cold wind, i stay toasty warm. and that is in boxers and t shirt. even a light puffy was too warm in there. i wear a thin ear hat also sometimes but usually use the hoods, reversed, as i sleep on left side mostly and they can cover you up. those bags are amazing. can't imagine wearing the clothes with it lol!

    OK, the harness in OD green is from British PLCE webbing and the pouches from a British Bergen. The OD green stuff is harder to find these days but you might be able to pick up a Bergen from a less scrupulous surplus dealer in OD green as they sell the side pouches separately from the Bergen. The Para Smock, in the 80s you had a surplus dealer in London (still there) called Silverman's. He used to reproduce items that were popular at the time, the Para Smocks were extremely hard to get because the Paras refused to give theirs up so no surplus. So Para Smocks, 58 Pattern webbing was very popular at the time, 44 Pattern webbing, especially the canteens, cups and bottle pouches, another thing more elite regiments refused to give up. These reproduced items were known as Silverman's Specials. I've had a few of his items over the years and they were generally not too bad with one or two exceptions. A nice little find there as i don't think Silverman has been doing the reproduction kit for a good few years now.

    Those insulated pants sure would be a welcome friend in a freezing tree-stand. I'm interested to hear more about why an airborne smock was being reproduced so soon after it went out of regular production...the only thing that came to mind was like airsoft/laser tag or maybe a film perhaps. Hard to say but the answer might arrive!

    • @boonedockery7220
      @boonedockery7220  Před 6 měsíci +1

      The pants feel like they are heated. As soon as you put them on it feels like your wrapping yourself up in and electric blanket. I still haven't received any comments explaining the "reproduction" smock. In 1988 there should have been a lot of surplus smocks around (even never issued smocks). I suspect that they were produced for another military organization/unit. That felt the pattern/design was superior for a particular area of operation to DPM. Having been 16 years since issued, the original smocks had already been sold to the surplus market. I remember Brother Val telling me that men in his unit bought Alice packs with their own money to use instead of the MOLLE packs. Millions of Alice packs produced but none in inventory to issue after 15 years.

    Occasionally you find a seller that doesn't know the going price for an item and you get an "Incredible Deal". That doesn't mean every buyer can match it. Somebody basically calling you a liar over a price just shows their ignorance. Please don't let the trolls influence your reporting. It's like negotiating with terrorists. We'd like to hear prices paid as well as what the current "going rate" is from other sources. Thanks John.

    LBE vest. Have you tried a butt pak on one? I'm curious how comfortable it would be. Bought one for $10. But LBE vest was to small for me to try out, and I am not a huge person. 5'9 - 190 lbs. Chest 44 inches. The ad said it was adjustable, but straps were factory sewn with no adjustment

    • @boonedockery7220
      @boonedockery7220  Před 6 měsíci

      I've purchased 3 so far and from what I've found is that they are very adjustable. The belt is not very ridged and might not support a traditional butt pack. I believe one of the MOLLE waist packs would work well but it would take up more real estate than a traditional butt pack. I will be playing with the back straps. I think I have an idea that will support and lift the belt in the back to support a heavier load and be more comfortable. I will be posting a video once I've got it figured out (I will also cover adjusting the rig). I'll be posting a TAPs video soon. I really like that rig for multiple purposes and I've modified a couple of mine in was I think improves upon the design. You and I are close to the same size. I'm 5'9" 200lbs and 48" chest (I won't comment on my waist 😅😆😄).

      Is your item an LBV 88 or a MOLLE 2 fighting load carrier? The MOLLE 2 rig will accept the waist pack but there's no way for the shoulder harness to hook up to the actual waist pack for support. Same with the U.S. butt packs. The butt packs are pretty much for LC 2 system.

      @boonedockery7220 appreciate your response. Being near the Blueridge mountains and all the hikers and campers, you would think this would be a premo spot to have a surplus store, but we have nothing. I guess the liberal government wants it that way, fear of militias forming and training. Who knows, but it's sad to not be able to get anything that is proven, tough, and cheap gear that can take the abuse of the mountains. Thx again

      @@ricksilver7398The folks you get out there are mainly college students. For them it's all about ultra light or trending gear. Gear snobs. Anything military would probably trigger them. LOL, their sport of backpacking was started by an ex Royal Marine. And the first thru hiker used surplus gear. Of course, he was familiar with it and that was about all that was available.

    Okay, you did over play the "not telling you how much" thing.
    Don't really care, your channel so play it as you will.
    Those rocket pouches are from a first generation British Army Bergen pre DPM. They were available in long and short back. The Bugout Shop in the UK has a few in stock in green-not common these days!
