Far from a flop. His solo career was pale in comparison to his work in Van Halen or how Van Halen with Sammy Hagar paralleled Roth's solo career. When the eye of popular culture passed through the 1980s, it fit Roth perfectly. He paved the way for the one hit wonders that rose to fame in the late 1980s. Sure, it was disappointing to see Roth as the opening act in the late 1990s. But, not half as disappointing when the main act took stage and watched half the crowd leave.

I think he has the greatest voice in all of Hard Rock and the greatest stage presence of all Rock and Roll frontmen. He defies the sterotypical nails-on-a-blackboard vocal qualities that one normally associates with Hard Rock or Heavy Metal plus he ALWAYS displayed a positive image rather than an angry image. No question about it he was THE best in the whole business!!

Dave really wasn`t given a fair shake in the early 90`s. It seemed like the world all of a sudden was against him. When the reunion attempt went bust it was then the world began to see the truth to Ed Van Halen, he presents himself as this nice down to earth guy but really doesn`t like people. When Sammy found this same thing out in `95 when he got kicked to the curb he learned the same thing Dave did 10 years before, Eddie is nobody`s friend, he`s just good at pretending he is.

I loved VH with DLR and saw them on their Diver Down tour. He (Dave) was fun to watch, and was tremendously funny, but even back then he spoke more of the lyrics than he sang. The record sales with Sammy show the band improved without his presence, whether you like one lead singer over the other, the stats show the facts. Sammy still sounds pretty decent these days (and is 7 years older than Roth, too) and yet these days, Dave's voice is virtually non-existent. Sad to see/hear, too. I would never pay to see VH perform these days for that fact alone. Sammy however, I'd still pay to see.

Eh. Different strokes for different folks, agree to disagree. Frankly his playing doesn't really do it as much for me anymore these days anyway. I still break out VH when I'm in my fun rock mood, but it's more jazz and fusion players like Scott Henderson, Allan Holdsworth, etc. More harmonically sophisticated players. And on top of that, he has burned so many bridges and been such an ass to so many people at this point in his life I just don't respect him as much anymore (as well as his enabling brother). That dude bought into his own hype in 1977-1981, and has deteriorated since. I don't deny what he did for rock guitar, though.
