    RE: "My motorcycle is also a werewolf."
    When you meet the bad boy down at the beach, and he says "me and my motorcycle were just enjoying the view", you think it's just a dumb, pseudo-spiritual biker thing to say or worse, a terrible pickup line. But then, after having finished the episode, you realise that his motorcycle is ALIVE and it was literally enjoying the view with him. I love that about Remedy's writing.

      Only reason I have reservation on the Divided Faden theory is the fact that Dylan is supposed to be younger than her by a year or two. If they were twins I would see it more. However, it is entirely possible that it is more of a Lutece Twin situation from Bioshock Infinite. The same person from different realities but separated by one chromosome. Hence why the Board sees them as the same.

    This is similar to Bioshock logic of the multiverse. There is always a man, there is always a city and there is always a lighthouse.
    except in Remedy's case, There is always a hero, there is always a villain and there is always an organization.
    Alan Wake = Dark Presence = FBC
    Jesse Faden = The Hiss = FBC (again)
    Jack Joyce = The Shifters = Monarch
    The Actor = Door = REC
    Max Payne = Nicole Horne = Aesir Corporation
    This one is a bit of a stretch but ill voice it anyways
    John = John Myrra = Pink Bird Mental Institute (probably shouldnt add this, probably should play Max Payne)
    UPDATE: I've finished Max Payne 1 & 2
    Also the characters playing different characters in the multiverse is like how actors play different characters in different movies, different stories.

    Re: First one: the self-indulgent fan fiction tone is so uncannily accurate :D
    It's like "My Immortal" levels of brilliance.
    A very touching tongue-in-cheek nod to the fan culture, with loving attention to detail I would expect from Remedy. Kudos to them.
    It was a bit strange to hear that people actually get second-hand embarrassment from this. It's so unashamedly silly, absurd and camp, that it just made me grin the whole time 😁
    I'm sure it's Rose's in origin, by the way. It says "Teleplay by Alan Wake", so I think he just adapts real-world things that he sees glimpses of, tweaking the narrative and nudging it in the right direction in order to escape the Dark Presence. It's just that in this case, the "original story" is not reality, but rather another piece of (fan) fiction.
    Or, as you've said, the reality as seen through Rose's Dark Presence-affected mind.

    At the beginning of the Time Breaker episode it is hilarious to see Sam so enthusiastic and pumped while talking about all the nerdy lore of the story. I think that is a deliberate nod to all the Remedy philosophers who love theorizing about every little detail in their games. Shawn represents the new casual fans who just got roped in with AW2. Yeah, Tom Seine as a paracriminal identity thief is pretty much the vibe I have been getting. He is using the Dark Place to take over, or just steal, other big artist's identities. It would make sense that with this new info he is using it to become the main Master of Many worlds maybe?

    I have a quick language theory here, I could be reading too much into but I don't think so. The constant refrain of "percolation" in this version of Coffee World is probably a near double-entendre for the Finnish word "perkelöityä" (meaning something gets progressively more screwed up, fast escalation, root word 'perkele'), which I can 100% see emerging from the devs casually talking about "the percalator" during development and the writers taking that idea and implementing it into this "hiss corrupted" version of coffee.

    • @JazzSparky
      @JazzSparky Před 2 měsíci +2

      Excellent discovery! I definitely got the sense that percolation was analogous to corruption, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on why they chose that word specifically, other than to maintain the darkly humorous coffee theme.

  • @Dream0Asylum
    @Dream0Asylum Před 3 měsíci +14

    Just a few observations about the Time Breaker episode;
    1) Sean's appearance changes to that of the "Tim" native to the reality he shifts to. This probably applies to Door/Hatch as well - if Door traveled to the reality of Quantum Break, he'd likely change to appear as a twin of Hatch. "This is the ritual to lead you on, your friends will meet him when you're gone." Is there an epidemic of shifters stealing the timelines of their dimensional twins?
    2) The Dead Dimension - full of empty, discarded nodes - is evocative of the Trash Dump in Ordinary where Jesse and Dylan found the Slide Projector.
    3) Alan, Jesse, Tim are Hero Archetypes and are on similar, parallel journeys just in different genres (Horror, Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi) and they are literally "The Heroes With Many Faces." (speculation) If Alan has transcended this role, that leaves Jesse and Tim (equal and inverted heroes that parallel the equal and inverted pyramids); perhaps they will "merge" at some point and create an idealized hero that can police both space and time. (/speculation)
    4) Feral Scratch, Zane, and Alan are shown to be alternate dimension versions of each other. I have no idea what to make of this. I think they wanted to use the American Nightmare Scratch but he didn't look different enough from Alan as to not be confusing - so they went with Feral Scratch that's just Alan invaded by the DP? Zane and Alan I can buy, but implying Feral Scratch is an alternate dimension Alan is just confusing as it's clear what he is by the end of AW2.
    5) It is implied that Alan and Door are now on a collision course as they both fill the same Archetype at the same time, that of "Master of many Worlds." We see them working together here, but only with Alan in the lesser position. Now that they may be equal, a conflict seems inevitable.

      I also want to place a red string between the dead dimension, energy nodes and the end of time. Not sure what the actual link is but here are some thoughts:
      Nodes resemble the countermeasure
      The countermeasure was mean to stop the end of time
      The nodes were built to last even after the death of everything

  • @rocki_bb

    Time Breaker was so interesting. I love how as Shawn moves closer to the end of time/heat death of the universe, the lower overall energy state is illustrated by him also moving backwards through various videogame formats (the first videogames were text-based pick your adventure games).
    I've had this theory for a while that all of the main characters in these games are moving towards becoming gods/masters of many worlds. I think Ahti is this type of being (or something even stronger) and he recognizes the potential in Jesse. I think Polaris does as well.
    And I understand these stories aren't "canon," but I think they're meant to push us in the direction of lore that may have been missed in the past.

      The Old Gods tune Sea of Night implies they have sailed across the multiverse before. Maybe their first exposure to this individual was Zane? Who knows. In Dark Ocean Summoning they directly reference Alan by name. "A Land a Wake" So they do know his name is Alan. Just never use it.
      But I agree, it feels like Zane is already working subterfuge. That's by hypothesis for now at least.

    • @Woombi
      @Woombi Před 2 měsíci

      @@GamingUniversityUoG Tbf we’re both forming these theories under conjecture, but it could pretty easily be waved away with the “A land awake” line. That could be multiple things, Alan could’ve written that to be in the song, the old gods could’ve sensed it would’ve been an important part of the song without realizing it, or it could’ve been a completely accidental part of the song that was actually the part that got him out. My main thing with all of this is that let’s say you’re correct that they do know his name. Why do they STILL call him Tom. They are either accidentally being more accurate or are on purpose trying to help Zane get out, while simultaneously damning Alan to fiction.

      @Woombi Před měsícem

      @@JazzSparkybasically the breakdown is that in the chaos that is the narrative of the second game we find that in the background of his involvement of the story, Zane has mad himself look exactly like Alan and says that the diver was just a character he played in a film(a retcon that Zane made up to use the power of the dark place to make real through art and now he’s the filmmaker Zane) the idea is this, if Zane couldn’t find a way out of the darkplace himself because of the technicality he put himself under with the story then why not find a way out in a VERY roundabout way? The videos of dr darling in ng+ show that he accidentally made his way to the darkplace somehow and then he met Zane. This heavily implies something very significant, the characters that are played by Alan wakes face actor and Alan wakes voice actor met in the darkplace and decide to “collaborate”. This collaboration is Alan’s entire existence. He’s made to be two people at once, and with the fictional character finding a way out of the dark place the two “actors” playing wake(Darling and Zane) get a way out on technicality using Alan as a window. This will be the plot of the third game, Alan has always kinda had daddy issues and he technically has two fathers in a way now, it’ll be Alan fighting against a fictional existence because whenever Zane decides to put out “no no Alan wasn’t ever real he was just a character I played in my film about Alan wake, it was all me” Alan will be damned to a fictional existence, but there’s a way out of this, it’s already somewhat implied in the first game that Alan made Zane up, and his wife is a filmmaker. I think Alan will be fine despite the hell he’ll be put through.

    Something I notice people seem to forget is that Alan seems to have the ability to see (entirely or partially) the lives of other people. He thought it was inspiration (in the game, he gets them as echoes from FBI Casey' cases), and he uses that to write. He mentioned it to Casey at one point, and it's referenced during the jazz part of Herald of Darkness: "Echo scenes to seek out. Again and again."
    In the case of Rose, he is writing the story, but remote "seeing" her life, so his writing is influenced by her.

    And there’s a line about “living inside the dreamers dream, better let her sleep.” Let *her* sleep?? Pretty sure that episode of NS, from Alan Wake 1, was about a guy…interesting how that changed. Maybe we’re now talking about Alice? We know she had an influence on the stories of Initiation and Return, but one does have to wonder just how much, given her understanding of the Dark Place is seemingly greater than even Alan’s.

    imma (probably) leave a comment for each episode. first, the glorious #1 fan!:
    either alan was very VERY drunk and somehow slap-happy in the DP, or rose threw a fic in the lake and alan caught wind of it and now it, too, is one of his nightmares lmfao. it would also explain why he's stuck in his old outfit. or scratch was feeling petty and wrote it; it certainly has a lot in common with deerfest
    rose said she got messages from alan but alan said he had no idea what she was talking about. granted, he does have memory issues but you'd think he would've left himself a note about that

    omg the video game universe was found behind that locked door in the DP by an out of bounds gamer! iirc it was an actual arcade machine in an otherwise empty room! it was a rough draft type of thing but it was there

    Great play through, Dean. The Oldest House as World Tree/Pillar theory being fully confirmed is my favourite thing to come out of this.
    Interestingly, the Finnish mythology incarnation of the World Tree is the Sampo, which in the Kalevala is interpreted in the form of a magic mill which creates endless ‘copies’ of anything the user requests out of thin air. It fell into the possession of Ahto (Ahti) and he refused to relinquish it.
    In the ATU Index, the ‘tale type’ of the continuous magic mill has the classification number 565, which happens to be the passcode for the locked door in the Dark Place TV studio the second time Alan goes through, at which point it leads directly to Ahti. I theorise that Ahti is indeed the ‘owner’ (caretaker, guardian perhaps) of the Sampo, known to us as The Oldest House.
    What do you think? It ties in nicely my big Ahti theory which I won’t bore you with now because this is already a long comment. 😆
    P.s. Tale type 665 is also an interesting one as the corresponding Germanic tale has a ‘rule of three’ element to it, as well as a mysterious well-dressed gentleman, and more. I haven’t quite managed to reconcile it with the Remedyverse yet though.

    Looking back at this, I find it especially interesting that Time Breaker casts Tim/Shawn as the role of Alice, and "Lisa"/Jesse as Wake, and associates her with the spiral. Lines up with Alan taking Dylan's role, and Dylan being Jesse's "Shadow" as well (and with Dylan's dream visions match up with Alan as well). Makes me think of the two "sets" as "multiversal character complexes" or something - Tim/Alice/Shawn as "The Actor" and Jesse/Alan/Dylan as "The Writer". One wonders if this is where things are going in the end - the two of them vs Door/Hatch.

  • @Dream0Asylum
    @Dream0Asylum Před 2 měsíci +1

    The Dead Dimension at the end of time (where all realities terminate and die) has only one functional node and it leads back to the genesis of all things. This seemingly expands the scope of what we already know; It is not just Alan's narrative process that loops/spirals confined in a finite chunk of time - it is actually all of existence. However, even if you go back to the exact moment existence is possible - it's implied that you will arrive only to find that Alan was waiting for you in the darkness.
    Off that track a bit, it is stated that the reason Door is - compared to other shifters - so sane and powerful is because when he entered the Chronon Cave, he got an overdose of chronon radiation exposure that killed all his other "Doors." He is the most focused, both in ability and cognition, a shifter can be outside of the death of time. His mission to kill all the Jacks/Tims/Seans may be an attempt, for whatever motive, to create a shifter just like himself.
    Last bit for this in this tread; It's stated that the resonance based lifeforms (Polaris/Hiss) can kill Alan/Door if they are concentrated into one being and that being acts as a kind of "resonance bomb." It didn't work for Sean because his love for Jesbeth unbalanced him and he released the resonance before ever reaching Door.
    To wrap up, we have three possible armies fighting for control of existence;
    1) The Taken: Infected and led by the Dark Presence - which itself might just be only Alan's rage and jealousy given formless existence. It is only alien in the sense that it is so primal and insane that it can not be reasoned with and its motives are impossible to understand.
    2) The Hiss: Alien intelligence with a resonance-based existence. Much like the Dark Presence - it propagates by infecting other life. Though its process and tactics are able to be comprehended, its motives are inscrutable. It may operate on an elemental or animal like level, infecting others for no logical purpose - it is simply its nature.
    3) The Time Keepers: Created and led by Mr. Door, the Time Keepers are the corrupted, soulless dimensional twins of Tim Breaker who seem to act intelligently but without agency; only existing to do the bidding of Warlin Door.
    All three armies operate very similarly and, for one motive or other, appear to want to bring about the "Percolation" where all individual minds are combined with one of them to form one homogeneous mind/existence. My speculation is that they all share the same goal or role, to end The Spiral.

I wonder if there's a war somewhere at the end of everything and door is trying to manipulate to past in some way. His attempts to hunt down Shawns could have just been a gambit to motivate the right one to ascend. The fact he helped alan could have been an attempt to nudge him in just the right way, the fact he refused to help Jessie's brother who was clearly lost to evil, access the door ways suggests he's got a vision beyond just pure destruction

    3:36:26 "I want to know what drugs..." I know this is this a rhetoric question but I kinda do have an answer and we should talk about it. (Im serious! Let me explain)
    Look at the vortex in time 3:27:44 and you can see quite caleidoscopic geometry which is often described to be seen in psychedelic trips. More prove that Remedy has thought of this is in the part 2:49:31 where it calls the flashes to be in "psychedelic colors"
    I mean the whole text based adventure feels like a mushroom trip. The whole rebirth with higher knowledge thing is very typical for shamanic rituals and common experience using such substances.
    Before when describing interdimensional travel they have made metaphopric refeferences to maelstroms, black holes, worm holes and such but now they have also brought psychedelic trips as an addition.

    The crazy thing about all of these is that, no matter how deep it may get, these are all still just Night Springs episodes written by Alan. It completely muddies the lore implications because some can be total fabrications for the sake of making his story work and some can be how remedy’s universe works.
    Like episode 2 for example. Clearly Alan isn’t Dylan and the FBC isn’t in coffee world and coffee world isn’t actually some government sanctioned hivemind conspiracy. It’s just what Alan wrote for Night Springs.
    So how much of the Time Breaker episode is “just Night Springs” and how much of it is real? If you can’t create something from nothing (as Alan believes at least, which is good enough for now) then how much of this multiversal story is canon? It could be that the rules of creating the rules of these multiversal stories was why it was a failed attempt to escape.
    There’s new info in there, but given that it’s an episode of Night Springs, it’s hard to tell how much of that info is reliable….and I love it for it. I think it’s incredibly interesting because of it.
    We can’t just ask ourselves what that episode means on its own. We have to also ask ourselves what does it mean for reality outside of Night Springs? Because it possibly could only slightly resemble it, like the other 2 episodes.
    I’m also wondering if these became real night springs stories in reality. Wonder if Jesse will find the one about her going to coffee world in Control 2 and be like “….Wake, wtf?”

    @ 3:46:00 - Sort of off-topic for what you were talking about but do you think if Polaris was all that was left in her dead universe (well her and The Hiss), do you think thats why she "went with" Jesse for lack of a better term? Like she was in a dead reality, nothing left except her opposite/enemy (The Hiss), so she would rather become a guardian angel type entity and attach herself to young Jesse. Sort of a form or symbiosis (I think that's the term?) they are helping each other even though they aren't the same and don't necessarily have the same goal, or at least didn't have the same goal until The Hiss were released into The Oldest House.

      I mean it is a possibility. I don't think we have enough information to formalize that hypothesis but its something I'm thinking about right now.

    I have absolutely loved Alan Wake since 2010, - Control and Alan Wake 2 are equally incredibly awesome and amazing, (and American Nightmare), I really, really enjoyed this DLC, - considering the story behind this three-piece DLC is these are stories Alan Wake has written in failed attempts at escape, so the final piece you can only find your way to Alan as that was his plan, - an attempt to use his gift to find a way to help him escape

    I like the idea that the 2nd episode is basically a skeleton built upon some core concepts of the same thing that became control. It has several similar thoughts, but going different ways. It is familiar, but not a carbon copy. It's not a 1=1 'oh it is this like This from control is now That here. But once the symbols are pulled away and the core ideas are on the table, you really see the connections and similarities.It's like someone pitching an idea for a tv show, and it turns this way, but if you pitch it on a book it might turn a completely different way. (which is amusing, a one episode tv show vs a long story comparison)

      As someone said... The Lake absorbed it, he decided to use it, maybe in desperation, to see if it would help him escape... But it had to be TRUE. He had to write it in her style, or it wouldn't be true. Even if he did it as a form of practice because he was feeling blue about his situation and not very positive about his writing he was still able to use elements of it in his actual escape. 5D chess

    *edited to remove a spoiler from the book I shouldn’t have typed
    Have you read the Quantum Break novel? It’s another multiverse version of the game and I swear they reference Beth’s fate in that book in the comic section of this DLC. And the bullet of light in AW2 appears in the QB novel as well.

      @@GamingUniversityUoG I’m about to reread it too! It was a book with the free range to include abandon story elements (or those too costly) from the game’s development stage. It’s interesting to read “Quantum Break: The secret history of time travel” where they document the development processes too. The novel Zero State is not considered canon to the game. But in San Lake’s foreword for the book he says since it’s more of a multiverse story you can kinda consider the book another version of how their story played out.

    I'm watching this days late but i fully agree with 1:03:40- ish time stamp that Rose probably sees the world this way. I think since her run in with Cynthia, Rose lives in this almost haze-like state where she sees things differently than everyone else, in a very rose-colored glasses type of way. Even before this DLC, i imagined Rose went around killing Taken with a smile and not fully realizing that this was a dangerous situation she was putting herself in. I'd like to think with this DLC, it supports that because I can see this bleeding over into the real world and that being the reason Rose always seems so out there and creepy at times.

    First Episode is likely blended with Rose's fiction, it's similar in tone to the lunchbox scraps of fiction.
    In the epilogue cutscene of the first game Rose takes over as the "Lady of the Light", which is kind of a protector role for Bright Falls.
    Rose was also touched by the dark presence.
    However, her fiction can't actually affect reality to the same extent as Alan's.
    As Control's DLC shows, not everyone is capable of harnessing the power to affect reality with writing, look at Hartman who is technically a highly educated man, but one who lacks the "creative spirit".
    Rose has that "creative spirit", it's just not honed to the extent where it could be used to its full potential.
    The second Episode seems to be an earlier draft written by Alan for the plot of Control as a short story.
    The third Episode is really interesting, as it ties in Quantum Break with the rest of the Remedy-verse, however it seems like it was quite rushed.

    I can't tell if I'm grasping or if it's a thing, but background characters in both episode 1 and episode 3 looked familiar to me. I felt like they looked like the agents that were there when the FBC interrupted Saga and took Wake away in the base game, but I'd have to go back into AW2 and get to that part to see their faces again then compare to dinner customers and set crew from ep1 and 3. I know for sure some of the faces in ep. 1 show up in ep. 3 and the friend watching me play noted that one of the ladies looked like the agent in charge during base game. Notably the FBC agent Saga met at the FBC monitoring station doesn't seem look familiar to me as any of the background folks in the dlc. It's Remedy so I don't know if it means something or I'm just misremembering or if devs are using similar faces to mess with our heads (or reuse some assets).
    Has anyone else noticed this or am I drinking too much of the coffee?

    Episodes 2 and 3 definitely feell ike paraphrased retellings of Control and Quantum Break. Which would make episode 1 what, Alan Wake or American Nightmare or something? Episode 2 has the strongest parallels with "The Sibling" paraphrasing a lot of Jesse's dialogue even. From the whole "This is going to be strange" and panning down from the Coffee World sign to the Hiss / Coffee paralel I felt like this was a seriously abridged version of Control.

    Dean, I'm sorry you had these technical issues with the audio. I hate when that kind of stuff happens, especially if it diminishes how I perceive the quality of something I'm making. For what it's worth, it's still totally listenable, and I'm still watching the whole video.
    To the people in chat being like "the audio was echoey, but it's fine now" - you were unfortunately mistaken. It only sounds fine because what you were hearing at the time wasn't a good barometer to be able to tell one way or the other. It was consistently echoey throughout most of that section, and there were never any moments where it was "fine now". If Dean's getting conflicting info about how it sounds, and he can't hear it on his end, it can make it really difficult to troubleshoot problems like that. If you don't know for sure, or can't tell, don't guess based on sparse information. Wait until you can hear someone talking where it's obvious before saying it's better, otherwise you're just adding confusion. That's my two cents.
    source: having dealt with many technical issues that I couldn't personally experience on my end, audio and video. It's so frustrating... Why can't technology just work?
