It's even worse when you walk the graveyard in collevile-sur-mer next to omaha beach. Walking it yourself in person gives you a true measure of how many lay there. It took me a couple of hours.

Today I live in a free Germany in a democracy and in freedom. Many, many people died for this.
We must never forget the terrible price paid for it. We must never forget the guilt my grandparents took on. I have no responsibility for what happened then. I have a responsibility to ensure that something like this never happens again.

Living in the free state of Bavaria as a Dutchman, i notice the big difference on the way the Dutch show their gratitude and the importance to preserve our heavily paid freedom we enjoy every day. I think it is because the Dutch who where repressed by Nazi Germany lost their freedom.
You have to have been occupied, to appreciate what freedom really means. And when you do, you never forget who gave it to you.

I was there in 2017 and knewI was going to be emotional but wasn't prepared for totally breaking down. It hit me like a ton of bricks what my parent's generation sacrificed for our freedoms. If you can make it to France, Normandy should be first on your list.

I'm a retired RN and was in Normandy in August of 1983 with my family. It was a beautiful sunny, blue clear skies mild day. Perfect weather. We were looking at the information board describing the different beaches and noticed a family of 4 on the beach. Even the car was on the beach. The 2 small children (3-4 years) were running around playing, laughing, giggling and enjoying themselves as only they can do. Mom and dad were talking and eating. What a difference from what we know occurred in June of 1944. I wish everyone had an opportunity to visit there and perhaps realize how precious life really is.
    Thank you.

They don't...especially the young ones. There is a Dutch girl who rides her motorcycle and has a fairly popular YT channel. I asked her if she could take us on a tour of the battle sites from Market Garden being that she could not travel due to COVID-19 and her parents live not far away. She never acknowledged the request but a couple of videos later did show some of the battle memorials at Arnhem. She described them as "some battle or something was fought here." Taking for granted the very freedoms she enjoys that others paid for with their lives. Young people today are the worst that have ever been produced. Spoiled and entitled. I immediately unsubscribed from her channel.

Unbelievable place. Sucks the breath right out of your lungs. It's a very different feeling from, say, Arlington National Cemetery. At Colleville, about 80 percent of the men buried there were under 20 years old. The absolute innocence, terror and tragedy of the place, coupled with the way the sun glints across the white crosses, is just absolutely something else. Very, very, very moving

All the death that happened on the beaches of Normandy. To start to free those in many countries that had fallen when Germany invaded them. That all these crosses represent soldiers of the allied countries taking part in this dreadful event. It is a tragedy that current younger people (written in 2024) probably have very little knowledge of the "heavy cost" this invasion created. The crosses represent each soldier that died is so sad. And yet the invasion had to be done to free the countries of Hitler's grip on their land. Wars are very costly and this shows what huge numbers who died in invading Normandy. May this event NEVER be forgotten. Along with the many war's since Normandy as well. GOD has blessed the many who died here. I was in Vietnam and yet the over 58K who died in that conflict were very few in comparison to Normandy.

It’s funny sometimes as I think about how veterans are treated today that when my dad passed and he was in the army Air Force as a pilot, he died all all that he received was a plaque that came in the mail. That was it. No big 21 gun salute no messages from the military nothing thank you. no thank you when my nephew died he was in Iraq. Want to come to him? No did he get a flag, no? he tried to get help but they just pushed him away. He ended up taking his life, but apparently that was OK. I don’t know why this country doesn’t treat their veterans better they do so much right down to the letter.
