Just an FYI for anyone looking to do this and maximise the performance of SSD, the Optical drive connection on the MotherBoard is only capable of SATA II speeds (3Gb/s ~ 300MB/s), the connection meant for the HDD is a full-fat SATA III bus capable of the the full 6Gb/s (~600MB/s) data transfer rate. You can get both running @6Gb/s but you need to get a proprietary cable and take the MLB completely out to plug it in (iFixit sells the tools and cable). These most, if not all, of these iMacs meant to have the option of having a regular 3.5" HDD + SSD (which could be mounted underneath the ODD [optical disk drive] ). Again, this requires you to get the extra cable so that you can populate the plug on the backside of the MLB. In the end, this gives you (should you so desire) 1 SSD + 1 HDD + 1 ODD; you can have your cake and eat it too!

removing the DVD drive may negatively impact the airflow. The flow may be designed with the drive in mind so the air pass-thru like an air duct. Think about the air ducts in your home. Without it or if there are leaks, the air doesn't flow properly.

Once your Mac's power cable is unplugged, wait 5 to 10 minutes for the capacitors in the power-supply to discharge. If you're worried about getting shocked, this should eliminate the risk. The caps will be charged in the power supply only if the cord has recently been plugged in.

I have this same machine, purchased off a guy about three years ago. He had already had an SSD installed and 12 gigs of memory. Unless you need some heavy processing power it's a great, fast computer. My first Mac, an SE in '88 was over the hill in two years. And it was like that with macs for a long time. Paolo Ambrocio. Yes, as long as it has an OS installed. Just hold down the Option Key during boot up to select a different boot drive. Simply adding hard drive does not work. First, iMac BIOS maximizes its fan throttle when thermal sensor input (temperature) does not exist. Second, iMac 27 2011 model has three SATA connectors, so the SSD should be connected one of them - One for SATA hard drive, the other for DVD, and the third for extra (mostly connecting the third one for an additional SSD). The followings are missing: thermal sensor to attach sata connector and SSD surface, SATA cable which has power and data, and a frame to hold the SSD. when you don't find SSD frame which should be under the SSD, use highly sticky double-sided tape to put the SSD on iMac 27 frame very tightly. I hope you will revise the video because still iMac 27 2011 users are there (many many) and still a powerful and useful iMac 27. Also, when you upgrade CPU to i7 2700K, iMac 27 2011 will be much better in terms of computational power.

Suggestion: Tape off the hole on the side of the case where the optical drive was for MUCH BETTER cooling now that the drive is removed! Otherwise some of the added airflow will not be quite as thorough. Just a suggestion... it's what I did!

Please excuse my ignorance, but if I replace my optical drive with an SSD drive can I transfer my operating system and everything that's now on my Hard drive to run off the new SSD drive ? Would that be the best option or should I just leave everything on my hard drive and do a new install (latest OS) onto the new SSD drive and then transfer across selected files as I need them ?
