Under rated album too. I'm not even into this music, but when this song came out, I bought his CD, it was one of my first ever CD's. The album is excellent from start to finish, so much variety and style and funk, maybe funk is the wrong word.

I can testify that this patois and beat are absolutely authentic. You could walk three blocks in St James Town, Regent Park, or Jane Finch and the idioms and inflections are different. Caribbean descendants in the Toronto projects set the tone...but the patois spread rapidly as a kind of code talk outsiders had trouble penetrating ...
The best explanation I can offer is the Star Trek: Next Generation episode "Darmok", where the Enterprise encounter a people whose language can't be translated without common experience, because it's all metaphors and idioms on shared stories. In under an hour you learn enough of it that the final few lines spoken back to the "Tamarians" are fully comprehensible.
And that's what was like spending an hour with Toronto street kids. If you didn't do something with them, you simply couldn't understand them.
    And that was absolutely deliberate.

Snow ran up some crazy late charges and they had to suspend his account. When he tried to rent and they wouldn't let him he pulled the "Do you know who I am?" shit.
