    I've pretty much given up riding bike lanes in NYC, as the pedestrians in them are just too crazy. Try going up the 8th Ave bike lane in midtown around 6pm, and it's basically like riding on the sidewalk. At that time of day, I'm riding at or faster than the speed of traffic, so not riding in the bike lane is safer for everybody.

      Not only is it safer, it’s also legal to not use the bike lane. As bikes are considered vehicles and must follow the laws as a vehicle, but also have the *rights* of a vehicle. Including riding in the road (as in not the bike lane).

One time i almost hit this woman with a child walking on the road.. I sound my horn 10 feet before getting near them for 5 seconds but the woman didn't look. She is busy with her mobile phone by the way, on the street.. And when i almost hit them she blame me for riding a bike.. I always been a defensive bike driver..

    I sympathise with your annoyance, I really do. Almost all of the collisions I have been involved in over the years when riding my bicycle have been caused by pedestrians literally just walking right out in front of me. Having been badly hurt on two separate occasions it was one of the factors which made me give up bicycling for good. It wasn't like this when I was a kid, nowadays everyone's too busy listening to music on their earphones and/or looking at the phones, to actually be aware of their environment.

    • @futuredoc2014
      @futuredoc2014 Před 7 lety +79

      Nothing illegal about that. The bike lane is supposed to just be a safe zone for cyclists where cars and peds can't enter, but since cops don't ever enforce it, it's just as dangerous as the road. But it's not illegal to ride outside the bike lane.

    • @Kratos510e
      @Kratos510e Před 6 lety +8

      SW_student33 it actually is illegal to not use the bike lane, the only time you can get out of the bike lane is if something is blocking the lane. I'm not sure about any other places but that's how it is in CA.
      21208. (a) Whenever a bicycle lane has been established on a roadway pursuant to Section 21207, any person operating a bicycle upon the roadway at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction at that time shall ride within the bicycle lane, except that the person may move out of the lane under any of the following situations:
      When overtaking and passing another bicycle, vehicle, or pedestrian within the lane or about to enter the lane if the overtaking and passing cannot be done safely within the lane.
      When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
      When reasonably necessary to leave the bicycle lane to avoid debris or other hazardous conditions.
      When approaching a place where a right turn is authorized.
      (b) No person operating a bicycle shall leave a bicycle lane until the movement can be made with reasonable safety and then only after giving an appropriate signal in the manner provided in Chapter 6 (commencing with Section 22100) in the event that any vehicle may be affected by the movement.

      Kratos510e why site California law on a video from New York?

    • @Kratos510e
      @Kratos510e Před 6 lety +2

      william brennan, because NY is within the states and also has bike lines so it's very likely that their bike laws are the same if not very similar to CA, which they are. Also CA bike laws came up first in search.
      VTL 1234. Riding on roadways, shoulders, bicycle or in-line skate lanes and bicycle or in-line skate paths. (a) Upon all roadways, any bicycle or in-line skate shall be driven either on a usable bicycle or in-line skate lane or, if a usable bicycle or in-line skate lane has not been provided, near the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway or upon a usable right-hand shoulder in such a manner as to prevent undue interference with the flow of traffic except when preparing for a left turn or when reasonably necessary to avoid conditions that would make it unsafe to continue along near the right-hand curb or edge.
      Conditions to be taken into consideration include, but are not limited to, fixed or moving objects, vehicles, bicycles, in-line skates, pedestrians, animals, surface hazards or traffic lanes too narrow for a bicycle or person on in-line skates and a vehicle to travel safely side-by-side within the lane.
      RCNY 4-12 (p)(3) Bicyclists should ride in usable bike lanes, unless they are blocked or unsafe for any reason.

    As annoying as it is, please slow down more when passing these people. If you bump them they could fall and in some circumstances will die if they hit their head a certain way. Roaring past them and increasing danger because they have done the wrong thing is not the answer to this problem. Cyclists who do this are no better than motorists who do the same IMHO. I'd recommend grabbing an Airzound horn too, may be more audible in NYC than your bell.

    Keep up the great videos! Always enjoy to see what it's like cycling around NYC....
    As for people ignoring your bell.. From personal experience and based upon no scientific research, I've found people react better to a vocal call out rather than a bell. I've ridden a bike behind a pedestrian walking in a street ringing the bell mad, and absolutely no response.. Gave one LOUD "HOP" (Something that sounds like a mixture of HOP and YUP) and they hear it and move instantly. It might not work in a city as busy as NYC, but it's fairly effective, give it a shot along with the bell maybe?
    Or as others have suggested, buy the Hornit or something similar.

    In the past years i've used an air horn, it made the silly pedestrians jump, only problem is when im going i'm going ~40km/h the net airflow going into the horn cancels the air coming out resulting in no sound

      Gojira Gaming These streets are so busy that pedestrians have basically traffic lights too. They just don't obey the signs.

    Dude, you have awesome stuff on your channel. Are you from Hawaii? You sound exactly like my friend.
    They have a added a few of these dedicated bike lanes in Seattle, and I can't understand people's attraction to stepping out into them before they have a walk sign. It's almost like they wait for me to get close and there is some kind of instinctual reaction to get in my way.
