Mike Monsoor was 25 years old. Imagine that. He spent several years after high school just training to get to be able to deploy performing his craft. Still just a kid... Granted, an absolute warrior in every sense of the word... but jesus christ... 25 years old. He didn't hesitate to perform an act that words can never capture correctly at the age of 25. I was in Afghanistan when i heard about what he did, and brothers let me tell you, I could live 100 lifetimes and never be worthy to step in his shadow.
His story should be read to our politicians every morning, as a reminder of just how awful they are at what they do, and what people have done to allow the rest of us to be so selfish.
When I was 25 there was only one thing I cared about and that was myself it’s hard to fathom a person being that brave and so selfless at 25 years old….un ending respect from Australia for that man

Mike Thornton Citation (medal of Honor )
"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while participating in a daring operation against enemy forces. PO Thornton, as Assistant U.S. Navy Advisor, along with a U.S. Navy lieutenant serving as Senior Advisor, accompanied a 3-man Vietnamese Navy SEAL patrol on an intelligence gathering and prisoner capture operation against an enemy-occupied naval river base. Launched from a Vietnamese Navy junk in a rubber boat, the patrol reached land and was continuing on foot toward its objective when it suddenly came under heavy fire from a numerically superior force. The patrol called in naval gunfire support and then engaged the enemy in a fierce firefight, accounting for many enemy casualties before moving back to the waterline to prevent encirclement. Upon learning that the Senior Advisor had been hit by enemy fire and was believed to be dead, PO Thornton returned through a hail of fire to the lieutenant's last position; quickly disposed of 2 enemy soldiers about to overrun the position, and succeeded in removing the seriously wounded and unconscious Senior Naval Advisor to the water's edge. He then inflated the lieutenant's lifejacket and towed him seaward for approximately 2 hours until picked up by support craft. By his extraordinary courage and perseverance, PO Thornton was directly responsible for saving the life of his superior officer and enabling the safe extraction of all patrol members, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service."

And doesn't try to push forward one bit. Just another example of Jocko putting his ego in check. So much respect. There are so many great lessons in this podcast. Thank you for this one Jocko. This is an unbelievable story of true selflessness.
This might be the best single episode of a podcast of ANY genre I have listened to. I'm blown away. Hollywood couldn't replicate this emotion or the two men being clearly comfortable enough with each other to say or show any emotion . You could tell any question from Jocko was accepted by Thorton without hesitation. You could FEEL the brotherhood through a god damn podcast. It's crazy.

I've listened to about 20 episodes so far. I have to say I was amazed hearing the respect drip from Jocko when he spoke to and of Mike Thornton. Don't get me wrong, Jocko has always presented himself as a professional in every interview and episode I've ever heard him in. But this was impressive getting to hear him interview someone he clearly respects and admires to the degree it seemed to pierce the Jocko Veil a little. Top notch.

Some of my other favorite episodes are Roger Hayden x 2, Andy Stumpf, J.P. Dinnell, Jonny Kim, William McRaven, Thomas Richards, just to name a few. Such good content

It's interesting to hear jocko react to Mike Thornton. He seems like he's a lot younger, voice lighter, more excited, and slightly nervous. It seems like he's got a lot of respect for this guy, almost like a reverence

Mike Thornton is an absolute legend in the teams. He is the seal that put into action most of the values all seals are sworn by. There is no greater thing a military man can do in his career then to climb through hell and back to make sure his buddies come home. Mike Monsoore is another SEAL whose name will be forever engraved on the short list of men who've made the ultimate sacrifice for nothing more then the LOVE of his brothers.
John Brady Mike Thornton is legend in the Navy, not just the SEAL Teams. I used to read his citation to every group of newly minted petty officers at their indoctrination class. Thornton’s exploits that day would’ve fallen in the category of miraculous if he hadn’t been so strong, so well trained, armed, experienced, and, frankly, lucky.

@@bleedulus I'm not a soldier, but I've played enough military sims to understand that you have no idea when that grenade is gonna go off. Especially if it was cooked. Don't underestimate the time it takes to locate and ID the thing thrown at your chest, reach down, grab it, cock your arm back and throw it. Chances are he'd have reached down to grab it and the thing would have exploded, killing him anyway and severely wounding or even killing the rest of his squad. He acted like a hero and took one for his team. A soldier's soldier.
Jocko demonstrated his respect and admiration for Mr. Thornton by honoring his request not to read the MOH citation .
When I was at Gunner’s Mate A school Mike Thornton was there to give a moto speech to the pre-buds dudes and Gun school guys. All I remember was how he dwarfed the podium and how in awe even our instructors were of this man. Just damn.

Me too. I'm not sure what is about Vietnam podcasts that I've found so fascinating....there's just something off-kilter about all of the stories that draws me in.
All my favorite military books are about the Vietnam War. It was such a unique war, and I can never get enough of it.
@@aarone1981 Agree. I am an American living in Vietnam and as a history major, I have had the privilege to talk to veterans on all sides, as well as civilians that lived here during this time and I have been able to gain a pretty cool perspective on things.
I like that Jocko pays homage to the previous generations, and I absolutely love the respect he shows for them on the show. That intro he gave Mr Thorton was top notch. Outstanding!
The old time seals from Vietnam. Are the shit. Sneaking around the jungle at night. It’s like going into someone’s backyard Kidnapping people at night in there hooches with out know one knowing shit. Should pay little bit more homage to them. No gps. Shitty radios. The starlight night vision scope. If they had one. They wrecked havoc on the NVA. The Vietnam Seals and Sog dudes were some of the best warfighters ever
The 1952 US Army Special Forces patch(same one you see today) includes an arrowhead(the patches shape) signifying Native American style unconventional warfare, a dagger for the group's elite nature, and 3 lightning bolts. The lightning bolts represent sea, land, and air. The ways US Army Special Forces can infiltrate an objective. They also have scuba A-Teams and maintain an independent underwater school in the Florida keys, widely known to be one of the most difficult schools in the entire US military. But their patch was introduced in 1952. 1952! A full 10 years ahead of any other special operations unit even being formed.
All respect to all combat vets, especially Nam vets. They don't get nearly enough respect for what they did. And the disgusting way our country treated them upon their return home. My combat experience in Iraq pales in comparison to what these men went though. I respect Vietnam vets deeply.

The most moving part of this clip is at about 1:14, Jocko finishes reading, clearly moved by the words and story. Mike Thornton, smiles and gives a small grunt, understanding that what was being read he lived a long time ago. I like to believe that they both understand that he sacrificed everything for his guys that day, for Jocko its deep deep respect and for Mr. Thornton it was what he had to do...just bad-ass.

My best friend in childhood became a Navy Seal while I was a Sailor working on Tomcats at Miramar. I know my friend had to have met or worked with Jocko and he will always be my hero I wish I could say his name but I know it must remain secret. I spoke with his Mom at my Moms funeral and gave her a big hug and thanked her for raising such a fine American! Growing up with my friend you just knew he was destined for great things and he was born to be a Navy Seal. Thank you my blood brother!

Funny to think that Jocko was only a one year old baby when Thorton and Norris were doing their thing in Viet Nam, and would later to become brothers and friends. Great people.
I met MT in Jackson Mississippi 2023. I was on Run For the Wall. He was in a chair but damn well stood up to go to the table and give us a speech. He spoke of leadership in our country today. Lambasting the weakness in Washington. I shook his hand and said “thank you”..then he told me “thank you young man” ….God thank you for making me cross paths with him..
He talks like my dad and many men of his generation with elegance and humility. My dad was a navy pilot in Vietnam. RIP

Another great podcast with another great man. From a fellow veteran, it’s been an honor to be able to listen.
I met Mister Thornton when he was in the Netherlands with SEALTEAM TWO for a cross training in the Netherlands.
We regularly trained with the Seals and English SBS, Special Boat Service at home and abroad. I was in the Amphibious Section in mid-1977 or 1978 consisting of Marines, commandos, frogmen.
And was a just a frogmen for about a year. Was paired with Mike as a budy and did a drill, had to inquire at a Naval base and sabotage and attack warships etcetera.
I experience Mr. Thornton as a quiet man, not a braggart but a modest figure with good qualities and qualities.
Later I met him in England at the SBS where he was seconded in the context of cross-training. Years later I understood that Mr. Thornton was a war hero, which says enough that he was very modest.
By the way, still fond memories of working with the Seals and SF units all over different places,

I remember seeing Mike Thornton while standing gate guard as a young sailor in the late 80s. If I knew then what I know now I would have respectfully asked to shake his hand after I had saluted him. Why haven't they named a DDG after him! Mike Thornton is one of the VERY FEW PEOPLE who I would feel privileged to meet

I once had to help a buddy swim to shore and it was maybe 100 ft i pulled him to shore, when i got there i layed on the beach in exhaustion.... i cant imagine getting shot in the leg having shrapnel in me and pulling 2 guys through the water for hours... thats litteraly superhuman, its amazing what adrenaline can do

I never met my uncle Virgil. But my mother told me what happened to him. It was during the battle of the bulge our troops were in retreat. A grenade was thrown by a German and my uncle threw himself on it to save his buddies. He was left for dead for who would have thought he lived. The Germans medics patched him up. At least he got to come home to see his family.

Although I don't like to publicly admit appreciating Navy guys, Mike Thornton has always been and Jocko is now an exception. I had the Distinct honor of Serving under Mike Thornton on the USS EDENTON ATS -1 back in 87 - 88...I was in Deck Department and He was Our 1st Lt. And the Ships Salvage Officer...We Called Him Mr. T..and to this Day He is the Fairest Boss I have EVER Had and a True American Hero..And I have the Highest Respect for Him , Both as an Officer and a Man..He is Truly One of a Kind

My Grandfather didn’t go past the 6th grade either, but he was an avid reader and excellent writer. He was also a successful businessman. Thank You and your Dad. In “Today’s Navy”, they probably wouldn’t even let you enlist. Did you happen to know Lt. Nickolas Walsh? I met Dr. Walsh, when he was Chairman of Rehab Medicine at UTHSCSA. I read the book “Navy Seals In Vietnam”, of which he is in.
