OK...I'll admit it. I didn't give you guys a very good conclusion when it came to the first review on the Keychron Q1. Most people just wanted to know which they should pick between it and the GMMK Pro and the ending left a lot of you feeling cold. So I reached out to Alexotos and got his pro tips on how to do some cheap, easy , and SUPER effective mods to the Q1 and it really helps solve the dilemma - Keychron Q1 or Glorious GMMK Pro.

Rare to see people admitting they were wrong when presented with new information. Proud of you!
Q1 kinda pog tho - love the video and glad to be part of the community!
I was seriously shocked at the difference. Now I have to try Force Break I guess??
@@badseedtech if you could only do one mod to the Q1, choose force break. it's the one that has the biggest impact on ping!
^^^ this. the force break mod was the one that really resolved the majority of the ping for my Q1. Even with the single sheet of thin foam, 3 layers of tape for the force break really helped a ton. Still flexes a ton as well
You should also try putting some masking tape on the corners where the screws connect it prevents some of the metal on metal contact it did a world of difference for my q1 😁
That modded Q1 sounds so much better than the GMMK Pro. Thank you for revisiting and showing what else the Q1 is capable of.
Thanks so much - and yeah, shockingly good. That board likely would have sat in a closet forever
Can you not open the GMMK Pro and do the same mod?
@@madd5 what's the point? The polyfil won't change the muted sound from the gmmk pro.
@@madd5 no because the q1 is very pingy and hollow so it has the possibility to get a deeper sound whereas the GMMK has the opposite problem wwhere its so stiff and muted that trying to add character and tone would risk it being pingy. Think of it like this, it's better to be able to add more foam then being forced to take some foam out.
The modded space bar still sounds pingy. And my gmmk pro still sounds better than the modded q1
man BadSeed Tech is one of the only few that goes "oh i was wrong? let me update you" instead of getting mad. so much respect for this man
As a person who was left confused as to which one to go with after watching your previous reviews, this helped greatly. Thank you!
Love the honesty man, this is what we need from our content creators!
The "force break" mod by keybored also works wonders, by the way. You take loving care in producing informative and incredible good looking content, really appreciate your update videos. Love you bro!
This! I did it and it’s very effective.
it works so well that it pretty much removed all noticeable ping even if i removed the foam in the board
It's one of two "required" mods imo. The other would be tape mod. The two mods remove the hollowness and ping completely imo.
@@user-kz9rz8ui1c I did that 2 two modes (very quick mod) + PE foam mod. Sound so good
Yea with proper modding and the right switches and keycaps it very easily punches way above it's weight. Sounds as good as many 6 to 900+ dollar setups. Goes to show.
Really happy that you made this video and gave it a second chance was nice to see you put some more time into this board after all the time with the gmmk pro
Yo Brian, thanks for coming back and readdressing this and it was awesome to see you chatting with Alexotos. Your content is always genuine and you seem like a real modest guy, keep growing the channel!
I'm so glad you came back to this and I'm really excited for when the 65% q2 rolls out and your review on it.
What an impressive result Brian... and this is coming from a huge believer in using Sorbothane to cure my keyboard ills! The Gat Blacks n' new Taro keycaps took it to that next level, something I'd be happy with on my desk. Great video.
Props for this my man. This is why you're one of my favorites in this space!
From the gateron switch puller update video and this video, this is how you know that a reviewer is genuine / cares about their work and viewers, you love to see it ❤️
Awesome follow up video showing off how good the modded q1 can sound. Also mad respect for a content creator who isn't afraid to revise their initial opinion. Subbed 👍
It's dope seeing you really dive deeper and deeper into the hobby
Thanks for making a follow up video. I was really put off by the original video review because what I saw in the Keychron Q1 was the most solid platform for the price that got darn near all of the fundamentals for a fun gasket mount correct. . . a platform that could be tuned to a wide variety of preferences. Alexotos made a great recipe for tuning it. There are endless other ways that also work quite well!
Good for you on backpedaling on your original review to fill in the holes that you missed. It really shows how committed you are to being an accurate and effective reviewer. Keep on making good shit man 👍
long term subscriber, love your content and love that you go back and correct your mistakes if you feel you did wrong, mad respect man
Thanks so much. We all have bad days but it kills me when I feel like people invested the watch time and didn't get what they came for.
Thanks so much for this Video my Q1 now sounds amazing thanks to you. I'm absolutely loving it now. Love your content keep up the good work.
This is why you're a great content creator. Never seen a bad video from you, but a follow-up like this one is what really puts the "+" after this channel's "A".
That PBT Taro, though...
Bro WHAT!? It sounds so good after those mods, that's wild. Great video!
that polyfill and PE foam combo was unexpected my goodness 🤩
Great video! 🔥🔥🔥
wow I can see why the Q1 has so much appeal now - awesome video Badseed!
I’ve always enjoyed your videos (content and your personality). I appreciate your candor and humility and wish you all the best and look forward to future content from you!
Thanks so much
Damn, this is both crazy helpful, and really admirable. Nice work Bri.
Great follow up video! Will definitely look at using these mods on some of my keyboards as well, crazy results
First of all, I appreciate that you took the time to post this update in light of new information.
Secondly, just a possible tip (disclaimer: I don't own a Q1, so I don't know if that works): have you tried putting bandaid or something similar to the contact points of the upper and lower case of the Q1? Maybe the bandaid in between will absorb the vibrations from the upper case, and will not transfer them to the bottom housing, thus removing even more pinging.
Regarding the sound comparisons, it seems that the GMMK pro is more muted (and one can conclude that the sound profile is worse), but from the sound test of Q1 I can *still* hear the ping, even *after the mods* in 7:46 . Even that sound would drive me crazy during normal daily use. You can greatly reduce the pinging, but the Q1 still seems to ping no matter how careful you are with it - and if you really want it not to ping at all, you will need to dampen the heck out of it, thus re-creating the GMMK Pro sound profile.
Oh boy, I am eager to see the facelifts of both the GMMK and Q1. Probably the Q1 will have a ticker bottom aluminum case in their Q1 V2 and no pinging, and Glorious will have a better gasket mounting system and stabs in GMMK Pro V2 (they have already fixed their plates).
Loved this video! Thanks for making it! I'm personally looking for a 75% with this exact form factor and this could be a really good option for me!
Just when I thought I couldn’t possibly appreciate you more. Thank you!
That PBT taro set looks amazing, I look forward to picking up that set in the future
I love this guy 👌 thanks for keeping an open mind on comments. Great stuff Badseed 👌 ❤️ the Alkaline Trio shirt on one of your videos .
You and Alexotos are among the most positive and wholesome people on CZcams.
Thank you for mentioning the shipping prices, at launch the Q1 shipping prices killed my excitement, it needed mods for the ping and was more expensive than the GMMK Pro. But just saw Prevail have preorders up with reasonable shipping and let’s say I’m interested again. Thanks for the video, looking to forward to a new project.
1.) MY GUY ALEX! LOVE THIS DUDE LIKE SLICED BREAD 2.) Why are you such a good dude? This wasn't necessary at all. However you still put in the effort to help educate people and get answers. Even reached out to a good dude for it. SO.MUCH.RESPECT. I can't sub any harder.
Tip I seen from 3ildcat is putting a bit of tape inbetween the top plate and base so there is no metal to metal contact which takes out a MASSIVE about of the ping, really helped my board
this content is so damn good... especially the B-ROLL, love the vids!
Subbed earlier this week. Thank the CZcams Algorythm gods for this one - Love the content and vibe of the vids!
Thanks so much; great to have you!
Dude so happy you found the recipe to love this board. I was skeptical at first myself, but after seeing alex work his magic I gave the Q1 a chance and I love it. Definitely my favorite board in that price range! That is until I see your review of the final product of the Nova65 😉
Yeah man, I think the best news is that people are already commenting other mods to try - this really opens this board up and I'm stoked to experiment.
I also suggest looking at wildcat's video on modding the q1 he used a bit of silicone gasket tape and the change was really noticeable for something so simple to do.
I cannot wait for the Q2. I am just dipping my toes in the mech keeb world and sure the Q series has its problems but a board that will teach me all about the different mods is exactly what I want to dive headfirst.
Did you do the same mods for the Q2?
thank you for this man, this really helped me out to decide... I'll go for the Q1, these mods are reaaaaally cheap
Great video, very clear.
Holy damn! Alexotos is a God!
Been getting into keyboards myself recently and this video is perfect! Great video! 😁
I recently got a GMMK Pro Pre-built and I am loving it so far. I don't mind the muted sound as I work as a software dev and have headphones on anytime I am working and listening to music. Sound is probably the least important thing for me when looking at a board. What I do like about the "grab-n-go" aspect of this board is that its pre-assembled, feels premium with the metal case, and I absolutely had to have the knob and the extra key on the side so I could map home and end when programming as well as an insert key. I did seriously consider Keychron, but gmmk pro won it out for me on that front. Though in the future I may get a board to just build out for Thocc sounds just to say I have one. What I would really love to see though is a Bluetooth enabled, GMK/VIA supported, all metal keyboard with a knob in the 75% exploded format. That way I can take the board and bring it with me to use with my tablet and other things as well. I saw plenty of cheaper wireless/Bluetooth boards but nothing that combined the feel and quality of the higher end entry boards. Would also love north facing RGB with it as well because I prefer XDA keycaps and the whole cherry profile interference issues seem like something switch manufacturers should have addressed, not keyboard manufacturers and losing out on per key illumination for setting up easy lighting with programs like Adobe Premier and whatnot hurts a little. Oh well one can dream haha. Great vid and keep up the good work.
Glad you did this updated review, remember saying in your initial video that you seemed overly...cynical about the Q1. Enjoy this video.
wow got tot try this on my next build. Night and day big change in sounds . Way yo go and Alex and BST. Sounds amazing I got blue typed to and foam. LETS GOOOOO
Was not expecting this vid, but very nice revisit. I really want to get a Q1 now because I want to compare these mods with Polyfil vs Keybord's approach that used Kilmat. I've got both on hand now just need the board, waiting on Space Gray bare bones.
I actually like the GMMK Pro's tighter sound signature though. I want both in my stable now.
Put in the order today to finally get myself a custom keyboard. Ordered the Q1 in Navy Blue, Alpaca switches that I will lube and film, ultramarine V2 Stabs, the Traitorkeys UKIYO-E R2 keycaps and all the tools I'll be needing for the build... Gonna take my time modding and making sure my first one is a good one!
Huge respect for this video.
I don't know if you modified something in your cutting method, but I love the flow of your videos these days.
I did, thanks! Its subtle, but effective.
After the first video I was like "Are we modding keebs or we are just surrendering before every hollow sounding case?". I didn't even bother to write it thou. Now I see the proper spirit and materials that I have never used. So thank you sir for admitting you were wrong and acting like a real enthusiast. Thank you!
Fair play
Thanks for revisiting this man!
My favorite two keyboard creators in one video!?!
Yo this collab is just bangin'! Badseed and Alexotos?! GIMME ANOTHER!
Great content, as always.
I must say that in that final versus of the GMMK Pro versus the Q1, both with Black Inks, I prefer the GMMK sound and by a lot. Yes it's more muted, but also "cleaner" to my ear, which is something I prefer greatly.
What's great though is that this video combined with the one about the GMMK Pro gives the people all they need to make an informed choice and that's what matters.
Yep. Muted is better.
It's probably the stabs sound. It's completely unmodded.
@@madd5???
I also preferred the GMMK Pro sounds after playing it back a few times. The space bar especially still sounds hollowish in the Q1. I dont mind muted if it sounds more "solid" but I guess it is because there is no flex in the GMMK Pro.
You can achieve a muted sound and stiff typing feel with the Q1 if you mod it as such with common materials and methods. . . but it is way harder to "open up" the sound of the GMMK Pro without serious hackery.
Holy shit, that modded Q1 sounds hefty when you tapped the case. Love that lower ping.
Another Absolute Banger!
Thanks Ryan - always good to see you in the comments bro!
Super Dope video!
big props for reaching out to a well respected member of the keyboard community
After watching your initial review, I was pretty discouraged to receive my Q1. But following what Keybored and Alexotos did, I was able to make mine sound the exact same as your new one. (Also running Ink Blacks on GMK Striker)
I just got my Q1 and I did all the mods Alex did and a force break just to kinda remove the case hollowness and it’s very good. I’m waiting on some lube to come in the post and I also ordered some Aurora clears to swap out the reds
Great video, and I love the shipping address at 8:44
Another banger as always ❤️🔥
Ty ty
i was pretty set on the gmmk pro but this completely changed my mind lol. need to do a little further research.
Months later I’ve decided to pickup a Q1 and rewatching this video now to get it tuned to what I want.
huge respect for this man
i knew keeping that old teddy bear will come to use! time to start the mod
I think that's my favoite thing about the Q1. Sure, stock it's pretty bad. But it's very mod friendly and everybody can mod it in a different way. People can get the exact feel and sound they are looking for. With the GMMK Pro, sure you can mod it, but you are more limited in what you can do. It's much harder to get exactly what you want. The Q1, even modded, can come out cheaper and possibly more avaiable than the GMMK Pro too. Both should satestify people but I think the Q1 is able to satestify more people if they mod it to their liking.
If you put some little squares of tape between the top and bottom case it also helps reduce resonance between the two case halfs. Definitely recommend
Love the q1 sound when modded right. You should try the oil kings on it -people say those feel amazing. Also creamarons are a thing now :) Thanks for the video!
WAIT WHAT????? PBT TARO? IM SO INN!!!!!!!!! Lovely Vid!
TBH, I have no interest in the enthusiast keyboard scene, but I still watch because you have a knack for making things interesting even if it doesn't pertain to me personally. I dunno man, must be the beard.
Great follow up video man
Thanks!
Let's goooo! Got the notif from discord!
1. This is so awesome that you made this follow up video
2. I had no idea they were doing a PBT version of the Taro set, when NK?!?! When???
Your beard with, Mr Otos Moustache, the collab we all want!
i came for the keyboard and laughed my ass off at the address you have put there!! 🤣
I just got this board and it is my first custom so great timing
You did good. There's a LOT you can do to tune this board.
@@badseedtech yes thats why i got it as I wanted to get a better modding experience
Good move. I really like what you did there.
Perfect, my q1 just came in
LETS GO BEST CHANNEL YEAHHHH
Great video!
Thanks so much!
Keychron now offers an Acoustic upgrade kit for like $10 that makes an amazing sound difference! I didn't do a tape mod on mine and it still sounds great. My GMMK Pro with flex kit is better but that took a lot more work and cost me a lot more as well because I played around with it so much. Q1 / Pro is a great board in 2023 IMHO. I do have WS Morandi in both of mine.
This is why I sub and support you. Honest and able to admit he was wrong.
Novelkeys coming out with a pbt version of Taro is INSANE I’m so stoked!
HOL UP HERE NK IS RELEASEING A PBT VERSION OF TARO?!
Brian why did you have to show me that? The Taro simp in me is screaming rn ;w;
Its really really good too and the compatibility in the base kit is bananas
@@badseedtech Taro is one of my favorite kits of all time, but was unable to go in on it due to GMK being GMK, lol. Any timeline or when we can expect it to drop? Very excited for it and would for sure buy it.
Wow 😍 what a difference
A roll of that foam is half of that $30. Foam shipping pouches are the same stuff, and while you probs technically pay less per pound for the roll, a pack of those foam shipping pouches will cost you half as much or less in exchange for only getting (for kb use, anyway) two lifetimes' worth of foam rather than twelve.
Love all the tips, and how much of a difference just those 3 things made!
Great tip, George 👌🏻
I just got the Q1 v2 and it sounds exactly like the Q1 after mods without having to do anything. Had to tune the stabs but outside of that its great.
I just got my Q1 and I love it. I pretty much did what Scott from keybored did and it's amazing. Thin sheet of Noico in the bottom case, 2 small pieces of painters tape near the screw holes, PE foam on top of the PCB and tempest modded the PCB too. It sounds really nice with my Durock Sunflowers and GMK Blue Samurai keycaps.
I week ago I would have doubted you, but now I believe lol
@@badseedtech it's definitely a good keyboard for modding, I appreciate that you revisited it. A lot of other content creators wouldn't do that and that's part of the reason I appreciate your channel.
*Scott from keybored
@@sseulgibear damn autocorrect. Thanks!
Scott from Keybored's mod is really nice! Killmat is INSANE. Used his mod as well. Love my Q1.
Alexotos is the GOAT🙌🏻
My respect is fully back for badseed
i can not believe you made stock gateron phantom browns sound good
There’s a Q1 build on CZcams with some car sound dampening and tape between the two case layers that all made it sound good af
1:42 This is why you're my favorite youtuber lol
God that space bar at 7:47! I want it.
Are those black and white keycaps still available or do they only sell the “bluish” and white ones?
Cut up some small squares of masking tape as "isolation pads" and stick them between where the top and bottom cases mate to get rid of the pinging noise. Might have to use a couple layers.
Its also worth mentioning that the Q1 will be coming out with a PCB with a rotary encoder
The Q1 of the stainless steel plate is the quietest keyboard.👍
