With age comes wisdom. I bought a 2000 7.3 at age 19 and stacked a bullydog chip with an edge evolution tuner. Six months later my tranny was gone and so was $3,200 for the repair. I'm 31 now and my (I'm the owner) work vehicle is a bulletproofed 6.0 that is bone stock except for exhaust and an intake. Eventually, we learn that pushing an engine leads to an empty bank account. If you want to go fast, an 8,000lbs truck is not the answer.

I'm not a ford guy, nor a diesel fan, but I find these videos very informative and entertaining. I have one request. When you start filming the carnage, can you slow down a little bit? Sometimes, you pan through the grenade aftermath, and I can't even determine what part is what. Just a pile of kibbles and bits. Not asking for an hour movie, just slow the pan down a touch! Makes a more dramatic explanation of what can happen to an improperly modded power plant. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us, about these problems.

Excellent video, Mr. Hewitt. My fiancée and I purchased an F350 to tow some trailers around. After going through your videos, website, and some other CZcams channel videos regarding the 6.7 "Scorpion" engine in our 2013 (mfr date 12/12), I've come to realize we avoided the dreaded the ceramic-coated bearings in the turbo. I hear that is a good thing since they have been known to disintegrate. There are supposed to be steel bearings in this years' (2013) turbo. We purchased the Damerow Ford-Dealership truck (located in Beaverton, Oregon) with 64k miles on the odometer. It is the platinum trim level. Unbeknownst to me, the center console between the two front seats is permanent. I think we will be getting a trim level that has seating for 6. Why did Drew Bledsoe (former nfl QB) need to get this truck with this trim? I don't know, but we have his old truck and will be trading it in for a different one.

We always hauled hay and cattle. I had to convince him to trade it in on a 2014 Ford Transit Connect titanium. I spent $15,000 on 3 repairs always concerning injectors, EGR cooling system and related items. It's a nice great hefty truck when running but always building a large tab to keep running. Thank you for your advice and staying true. Joseph .

Another good video Bill. I've worked for a Cat dealer for 25 yrs and built engines for most of that time. The bottom end of the 6.7's look a lot like the old 348 and 349's. They were overhead cam V12 and V16 engines. The over the road truck drivers always had to have more power and more power! The old 3406's took a lot. These new engines are incredible and at the same time crazy! I'm not sure about going back to a water cooled aftercooler but they are smarter than I am. Thanks for all the great info!

another great videoHere's a thought I've had as I've run into more and more quick diesles out on the road... With all the luxury and features these diesel trucks offer nowadays do you see your shop getting more "inexperienced" diesel owners coming in who have never owned a diesel before and break them trying to run them like a gasoline / spark engine? like revving the crap out of them or just slapping a tune on and not worrying about how hard you run it because "you don't have to worry about detonation" for instance? I see a lot of nice fast trucks out on the road and I can only imagine quite a few of those have been playing with fire by running a race tune on a stock engine.

Which is more likely to destroy a combustion chamber, when you light it, inside the cylinder ? A. (a firecracker) or B. (a stick of dynamite)

Career Ford diesel master tech and FCA/GM tech here. While this guy makes some valid points, I respectfully dissagree with his philosophy. Not all people delete and tune trucks to have "industrial diesel phsyco tune" kinda power. Many delete and tune for reliability and service life.....tuning and deleting does not in and of itself destroy an engine. An intelligent driver who deletes and tunes a truck will in FACT lengthen the life of the engine. I personally own a 2012 F350 6.7L.....I have 11,291 engine hours including 5,906 idle hours. This totals 254,604 actual miles. My truck was in the oilfield here in the desert of NM for the first 121,000 miles of tough operating conditions, however as the mechanic who performed all the work on the truck, I knew it had been maintained well. When I purchased it I drove it about 6 months in stock form, mileage was terrible, power was just ok. Cost of DEF piss and hassle was ridiculous, and constant regenerating around town was a constant irritation. Considering that the majority of repairs I've made on th 6.7L are emissions related, its an obvious weakpoint in design. Just another case of government destroying perfectly good engines. Its obvious this guy is all for government regulation and throwing money away which is exactly what the emissions systems on these trucks accomplish. The emissions debate is never ending and I'm not here to sway anyone away from being environmentally responsible. Just think for yourself and come to your own well researched conclusion. I personally am of the opinion that modern emissions system are more detrimintal to the environment than helpful. You cant consider only the environmental impact of the truck itself, but also the impact of parts producation, logistics, maintenance, and as of the recent years the continuous impact of production of DEF and the waste stream produced just from that. California wants to ban straws but has no problam mandating plastic constainers that contain enough plastic for 5,000-10,000 straws....liberal ignorance at work. Also consider the massive loss of fuel economy due to emissions that result is massive additional crude oil usage which also has a significant environmental impact. My particular truck was lucky to get 24mpg on the highway and 14 in town. I could jump in my truck today and drive across the country and see 28-30mpg, and in town I now get 17mpg. If I baby it I can easily achieve 32mpg and thats with a 80 gallon fuel cell in the bed full. I have towed approximately 60,000 miles at or near max capacity. I have never opened the engine for any repairs. Truck still runs like new. Its my professional opinion that a deleted and tuned truck "PROPERLY" driven is far more durable and long lasting. #1 Never mash the throttle. Diesel engines have heavier parts and rate of rpm increase that is slower will lengthen engine life. Always roll into the throttle slowly, especally from flat idle. If you hear ANY type of pinging you have accelerated too quickly. If you see smoke exiting the tailpipe you have acclerated too quickly #2 Just because its tuned and deleted does NOT mean you have to be a jacksass rolling coal every chance you get or at the sight of a Prius. If your rolling coal you are damaging the engine and wasting fuel, with the added affect of looking like a jackass and damaging the reputation of diesel engines and truck owners, which certainly does not help our cuase at the government regulatory level. A 3rd point I'll make is that maintenance is HUUUUGE on these engines and vehicles. Never go the factory interval on the 6.7L and never use 15W40 oil in a 6.7. I've seen far too many turbo failures on engines running 15W40 to know there is a correlation. I personally recommend only 5w40 synthetic. Adding a bit of zinc additive is also a great idea. I do not believe younger people should have delete/tuned trucks but those who are older, wiser, and more responsible I dont see any problem. As for this youtuber's claim that dpf delete voids a ford warranty, I'll say as a Ford master diesel tech that he is absolutely full of crap. Only modifications that directly result in a failure are denied warranty coverage, and the modifications do not void the warranty as a whole with the exception of catastrophic engine damage that is due to a tune. I admit that is a reality, however that goes back to the way the truck is driven. I have performed warranty repairs on many diesel engines that have been deleted and tuned. If its not directly related its not an issue. This brings back a memory of a customer who brought in a truck with one of the supposed emissions legal tuners installed like the youtuber proclaims is gods gift to diesel trucks. I wont name the brand, its not important as they all have the same basic philosophy thats used to write the tune. This customer had a low power complaint. I looked at the truck and found the dpf was plugged nearly completely. I managed to save it, and instructed the customer to remove the tuner. The fool took the truck, and he pulled the tuner out of the truck and then came back with the truck on the hook for a no start. Diag found the dpf completely plugged, I asked the customer why he didnt remove the tune, he claimed he did, but I knew he just removed the tuner but never set the pcm back to stock. His dpf warranty claim was denied. In no way was his engine warranty effected. Of course you will run into super-techs here and there who feel like its their job to regulate and nit-pick every little thing just to try and void a warranty with the thought that it will then become a customer pay repair thus making them more money. I am a six figure tech without the desire to shaft the customer without reasonable consideration.

Bill, well said on tuning these trucks. I have a 2011 and a 2016. 16 is bone stock ( work truck ) and my 2011 is my POV. I have tried different tunes but the key is to stay close to stock numbers and leave the emissions there. DP as he said is a great company for tunes, I also recommend AM Diesel Performance and 5 Star tuning. All of them have great Emissions on tunes and will work with you to make that tune feel right to you. Shifting points, times and lengths are the most complaints on tunes. All 3 above have great starting points, but will tweak them to your liking.
Don't go kill your trucks for crazy power, when these trucks are awesome enough as is. IF you do want to go crazy, you better start upgrading internals. If you don't and you break it, don't go blaming Ford, Its on you.

100% agree, tuning. Not saying too much tuning, but Bad trans tuning. In my opinion, the root cause is from Lugging w/too much converter lock up. That giant tune feeding those conditions....Massive amount of stress & heat generation! Then any microscopic impurity in that piston casting will show its face real quick. Every failed 6.7 I have encountered so far was user and or tuner related.
We have a 2012 6.7 with over 200K on the clock and outside of factory recalls and regular maintenance have experienced zero issues.
Thank you for all that you do.

Bought my '03 F350 7.3 used at 155k miles about 6 months ago. Had a TS-6 position chip in it. First thing I did was yank that tuner out. I really want to run this truck another 15 years/150k miles, at least.
Kind of sad to see what's becoming of these newer 6.4/6.7 trucks. Emissions is killing them, and the tuning to run em without emissions equipment is killing them too! Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Thanks for the video! I am looking to do a DPFand possibly an EGR delete on my 14' 6.7. I would like the extra range and it seems as though it would be a lot better for the life of the motor. I take great care of the truck and don't push it hard. I was thinking of using an economy tune when I get the tuner to deactivate the regen. Would this shorten the life of the motor? Thanks.

use only stock mapping, if you get a tune, make sure it's only to fool ECU into thinking DPF and EGR are still functional.

Hello. Great information. I have one concern. I live in northern Canada. Where the temps in winter can regularly reach below -35 C. These urea systems freeze and fail all the time. Rendering my $67,000.00 pickup that I use everyday for work useless and me freezing to death. Also the constant idiling plugs the egr cooler.
Is there any solution to keeping this urea from freezing or just getting rid of the urea system alone?

Bill, you need to have a MASSIVE sign in your shop showing the price of a 6.7L Crate engine from Ford ($13,000 and up) and a message that reads if you run an off road tune and any emissions are deleted, this is what to be expected, and tell them that Ford WILL VOID THEIR WARRANTY if its found out that the truck has been tuned and Emissions parts Deleted.

A mini maxx is one of the best options for tuning.. "a mini maxx has too much timing"? There are many different options for custom tunes through a mini maxx that are very safe to run with out a doubt. There are a one or two companies that really try and push an unsafe amount of power but that is not due to the H&S unit itself, that is due to that individuals tune files. Tuning these engines with out deleting the dpf is useless as well. The amount of emissions would increase with the dpf tuning on, and there for the dpf/scr would work harder to "clean up" the emissions and the dpf filter would clog/fill up quicker. With the correct custom tuning, a 6.7 with a stock bottom end will hold up to 650 generally. All about bringing the power on smoothly.

I can just image what the bill came to, my guess it was north of 15 K! For that kind of money I could spend December thru April on the South Island of New Zealand Fly fishing for trout till I just drop and still have plenty of cash left over to hit SW Montana from May to Oct! It seems to me that if you want to go fast buy a Corvette! A Truck like this, you buy for taking yourself out to the sticks on your hunting and fishing trips! But its his money and you are after all in the business of fixing this sort of stuff! To each his own I guess! I would love to have one with all the things that you do done- with a Camper on it and just see how many of the Nations trout streams I could fish in the next decade! Now all I need is a good boat load of money to make it happen! Oh and Happy New Year!

What exactly does the "we build a better motor than Ford" comment really mean? (seems really odd especially how he leans into the camera). I drive a completely deleted 6.7 with H&S tuner (they are not out of business as others have commented) and it is clearly stated all over the place that towing should only be done in tow mode (NOT IN PERFORMANCE MODE). So, the guys who owns the truck in the video (did not service tranny, did not change oil at regular intervals, pulled a heavy load in performance mode in his tuned truck) and from that we are supposed to believe that all tuned and deleted motors will end up with same fate as this motor? Also, in the video they state that you cannot run DPF delete because of the timing. What does having the computer over ride seven DPF sensors, have to do with timing. There is a stock setting on the H&S tuner that does not adjust the timing for any performance gain, it simply tells the computer not to throw error codes for all the disconnected sensors from the deleted EGR and DPF. I understand that they have improved the cooling system so that the super heated exhaust in the EGR is cooled more sufficiently now as it is brought back into the motor, BUT why do you want "heated used air" going into the engine. Cool, clean, fresh air makes any engine run more efficiently. Has anyone ever cut a DPF apart? HOLY BACK PRESSURE BATMAN, cut mine up and sent it to some guy on internet who harvest the platinum out of them and he paid me $275 for it and paid the shipping. You need the damn turbo just to force the exhaust thru all the crap that is packed into the beast. All motors BUT especially diesels want to breathe to run more efficiently. I am not claiming to be any type of expert and I am open to correction if any of comments here are incorrect, just simple observations from a simple guy. Who is damn happy and proud of his 6.7 (please pardon all spelling and grammatical errors as I said before just a simple guy here)

+keith knowles My dad has a 6.4 that he has had deleted for the last 12,000 or so miles and the truck has been great way better with out the bs restriction it has before deletes, Its up to the owner to understand what power can do to ones truck, even if you run in performance but drive conservatively i would bet you will be ok, and towing is obviously for towing, thats what it was designed for any owner should know that, maintenance is also key in owning a heavy duty truck, Completely agree with what you are saying on everything.....

I agree.. That truck had static lock due to a bad injector... This guy is selling...what he is selling, is his tuner... He thinks he is slick and we will fall for, some idiot pulled in performance mode...I have an 03 6.0 crew cab dually, with 600k on it.. Put the edge with juice on it at 25k miles.. I have had it in level 5 (kill mode) since install.. It is my work truck.. I installed the egr butt plug, when I installed the tuner.. No egr delete, nothing else has been done.. My question is am I abusing my truck by doing this? If possible I unhook the trailer sometimes this is not possible due to not able to release fifth wheel pin, I am able to do this with pretty much no effort unless on a upward grade then just a little more effort to get moving never spinning the tires.I usually only pull the truck 5 to 10 feet to start it. The truck can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. It pays $350 each time hard to say no
