I like playing on actual CRTs, but like 95% of the filters I've seen are hideous. They come across more like a weird photoshop of a CRT than a genuine CRT.
The TVs I played on growing up actually didn't have much of a scanline effect at all; the picture lines were so bright that they mostly bled over into the neighboring lines and left behind only the faintest of black scanlines, and you had to get up right next to the screen to really notice them. So when the early emulators started adding in those extremely dark and basic scanline filters I just found them to be hideous and inaccurate.
Also, for as much talk as there is about intentional dithering to blend colors over composite video, there's hardly any talk about games that were originally designed to be played on crisp RGB/VGA quality arcade monitors, and whose console ports usually didn't significantly change the artwork to account for consumer TV video connections. There's a whole lot of nuance to be considered when talking about the "intended" way for a game to look, and the answer can change a lot on an individual game-by-game basis.

Like music and fashion, I think it will simply revisit and go backward. It might actually be starting to do that right now.

@@Ret_Chrogames Do you know anyone who actually plays video games that grades these things?? Even sealed game collecting is kinda stupid--like, they're video games, these things are meant to be played. Not kept in plastic sleeves and graded, as if a copy of Little Samson is worth any less because it's got a little color fade on the face sticker. They're not fucking paper, man. They're an interactive medium encased in hard plastic catridges (or printed on discs).

So because they own a sealed and graded copy of, let’s say Pokémon red, they are required to crack it open and play that new copy of Pokémon red even though they have a loose copy to play with? Is that what you guys are saying?

Scan lines are a good way to relieve eye strain as well. It’s personal preference but can help a lot when playing retro games through analogue signals as well as mask some of that low quality video grain/blur. If you play retro games in 1080p like NES or SNES etc, scan lines aren’t necessary unless you wish to dim the video brightness which can cause eye strain.
