Hinokami Kagura literally translates to "Dance of the Fire God"
Imagine the face I had when After watching this episode, at the time, i was thinking about what could the fire God be and then It clicked... The Sun was the first "fire God" in human history and just like that i was able to discover that the "dance of the Fire God " was actually Sun breathing before It was revealed. The Fire God of Japanese "Amaterasu-ōkami" is also the Sun God, that means many things.

So when he remembers his father worshiping Hinokami, but also remembers his father telling him to become a hinokami, there's a poetic link but he isn't being told to become The Hinokami specifically, so much as to just become A fire god in the general sense. As fatherly advice, "Become a fire god," goes hard.

THIS episode broke the internet when it dropped! If I remember correctly it is also what caused a massive influx of people to check out Demon Slayer making it a massive hit.
Upper Moon 1-6 and Lower Moon 1-6 are the ranks. So Lower Moon 5 would be like rank #11 overall. There are some asterisks that are needed with some ranks which I'm sure people will add later without spoiling.
Also the term Tanjiro's Father used was Hinokami which would be 'God of Fire'
Hinokami can also (as long as it's not written in Kanji) be translated as (spoiler)

This should've been clear already, but no a demon cannot kill another demon, unless it's with sunlight, a nichirin blade, or you're simply Muzan.
Also there's only 12 (so 6/6)but there's an stronger upper half and of course a lower half. And amongst the lower or upper half they are not all relative in strength, they are all ranked in terms of strength, Rui, the one Tanjiro is fighting, is ranked lower 5, which means he's actually the second weakest of the lowers, and he's this powerful.
Also remember when Shinobu (butterfly girl) said to Zenitsu, your brain looks through past memories, as a last resort, to find a way to avoid death, that's literally what happened to Tanjiro in that final scene, the storytelling is just next level.
Yea, at first you may look at Tanjiro pulling off Hinokami Kagura as a deus ex machina(and in some ways it sorta still is), but they do give it some in-universe logical pretense by Shinobu explaining the whole thing of your mind desperately finding ways to live at the most dire moments.
Oh crap i never noticed that what shinobu says directly foreshadows what happens with tanjiro, thanks!
This entire arc foreshadows this scene, not only Zenitsu with his gramps, Inosuke remembered his newborn memories about his mother too

@@TheGloryXros A deus ex machina is when an author wrote themselves into a corner and needs an asspull to get out of the situation. Here this ending was properly built up to. It's the family bond. Not just Tanjiro and Nezuko working together at the end, but their father passing on his art and their mother inspiring them.
Rui also got a powerup just before the end. The author could just as easily have not given Rui the red strings and have Tanjiro just beat him, but that would have been meh. Tanjiro's final power up wasn't a deus ex machina but the culmination of the thematic battle of true bonds vs fake ones. Rui's sister had already left, his father didn't pass him on anything, his mother didn't love him.
His dad didn't tell him to become a Hashira......He told him to learn Hinokami, which is the dance/breathing technique.
23:24 This scene is amazing because Tanjiro’s life is flashing before his eyes to help him find a way to avoid death just as the hashira’s theory suggested.
This was the best and most emotional episode of season 1. It's just a perfection! UFOtable is just a phenomenal studio even today. Tanjiro really risks everything to save his sister Nezuko.

Also, ep19 was released during the Covid, soo... Not like we had much to do. Everyone was just sitting at home almost 24/7h, and we all just wanted anything good to happen. Demon Slayer just delivered
This has got to be the most genuine, and THE BEST reaction of Demon Slayer S1E19. I was waiting for you to react to this for years (I'm a long time subscriber of yours). I've seen this episode hundreds of times already, and I still cry everytime I see genuine reactions like this.
When the episode is so good that Luke coudn't pause for 10 minutes straight and pushes his chair back at the end of the fight.

The blood spatters on Tanjiro's blade were drops of Nezuko's blood (it fell on his sword when she got hung up over him) and they exploded because of Nezuko's Blood Art, giving the blade a final push.
It's really the perfect union of the two siblings fighting 💞

I love how everyone gets so hype watching this episode, no pauses, no talking, just purejoy and sadness. One of the most beautiful demon slayer episodes. I can't wait for you to react to the movie
Both Inosuke and Zenitsu having a life flash before their eyes moment was foreshadowing for when Tanjiro had his, and how Shinibu explained the theory it was to find a way to survive.
Also notice Tanjiro got that revelation based off his relationship with his Family (particularly his father) which showed more contrast with Rui and his fake bonds.
Threads and Webs could be seen as a metaphor for bonds as well, but in this case its lies, manipulations, and intimidation.
I've seen this episode so many times and my eyes still get all teary when the Kamado No Uta starts playing. For me this is when demon slayer begins, you have so many moments like this ahead of you, enjoy!

The colour reflects which breathing style the user will most likely use, blue water, yellow thunder, indigo grey beast, black is what Tanjiro used at the end which will be explained later.

Zenitsu’s “gramps” isn’t actually related to him at all. Instead of calling him master like here supposed to, Zen calls him gramps because he loves him like a grandfather.
13:27 Yes, he DID say about the rest of his "family" 'the roles you were given'. As in, he gave them the roles of "mother" and "father", they aren't actually his mother or father nor is their strength necessarily reflective of their position. So just cause one was called 'father" doesn't mean he's the strongest of the family or anything.
Also, the song that plays when Tenjiro uses the Hinokami Kagura/the ending, if you listen really carefully, it's actually been played all throughout the series so far, just without lyrics (and sometimes at different tempos). The first time I saw this I thought this was the first time the song played but NO. It's almost like, their theme? it's been used multiple times before this point, only sans lyrics. It's so good. And it continues to pop up throughout the series.

Just a bit of info.
Kizuki means "Demon Moon". The ranks are simplified in English as "Upper" and "Lower" moons, but in actuality are references to the moon phases (Jogen and Kagen). "Upper" and "Lower" is just way easier to remember and implement in a show. The 12 Kizuki are divided into "Waxing" and "Waning" Moons in German, in case anyone is interested. Sounds pretty neat as well :D
Hinokami means something like "Fire/Sun God". And Kagura is a dance. So it's a specific dance to honor the god of fire/sun. And it happens to be a breathing technique as well in this case, which is why Tanjiro's dad told him he could "become Hinokami", since breathing techniques strengthen you.

What makes this even more amazing is how Tanjiro's powerup isn't even random, it's set right at the start of the episode!
Shinobu tells Zenitsu the theory of your life flashing before your eyes, trying to find an experience to save you. And as Tanjiro was about to be cut to ribbons, his mind was scrambling for answers in his experiences to save him and found his father's dance! It's masterfully written!
No matter how many times I watch this episode, floods of tears appear. So glad you finally got to this episode and had the same experience as me 😂

The bonds, the family bonds. Tanjiro rememebrs his father to get a "power up", and Nezuko is awaken by the mother's ghost and helps Tanjiro to defead that demon. Both, together! Without that blood burning, Tanjiro wouldn't have been able to cut the head.

the way i see it is this, your average demon slayers are like foot soldiers, the lower moons are like squad leaders, The hashira are like commander of an army, The upper moons are all the strength of an army combined into one and Muzan is even further above that. (Might be a weird analogy but hey I tried)
Kinda. It's literally as simple as increasing in the exponential function. Lower 12 is the weakest one. Lower 11 can defeat the Lower 12. Lower 5 is able to defeat lower 12-6, all at once. Upper 12 can defeat all of the Lower ones, fighting everyone at the same time. Upper 1 theoretically could completely destroy all of the current lower and upper moons, by himself, in the direct combat, at the same time.
And then there's Muzan, that could destroy every single Demon in mere seconds.

This episode actually broke the internet. It caused Demon Slayer to become one of the few anime to cross over into the mainstream. SO MANY PEOPLE were talking about it! Even celebrities!
No Demons can't kill each other, besides Muzan himself, if they fight its literally till one just gives up.
Only Sunlight, and Nichijin Blades via decapitation can kill Demons.
In other words, demons can only kill demons with the tools regular people could use - wisteria poison and sunlight. It's probably easier for a demon to incapacitate another demon and leave them to wait for the sunrise. Wisteria would probably be difficult for them to handle.

The uppers are the most poweful.

I got the same reaction as you… when the picture of his father holding the kid Tanjiro, with the song playing, I just cried out right away 😭😭
In the next episode you'll realize just how strong the Hashira are. And then in the next movie you'll realize how strong the Upper Moon's are.
I love when you figured it out right before it was revealed who Rui was. It just has me more excited as you see the progression of this anime! Loving watching this series with you on my 3rd watch since I've watched it a few times before. Loving seeing how much you are enjoying this series! The bond & increase in power by both Tanjiro & Nezuko because of their parents encouragement was so amazing! This episode was so peak! Can't wait until the next episode!
Even years later, seeing this episode still makes me tear up a bit. The animation being so good, the music fitting so well and being beautiful, and the bond between Tanjiro and Nezuko, and their family all protecting and saving each other even after death...
And then finishing up with that AMAZING looking final strike, and rolling straight into credits showing Tanjiro's dad holding him up like he's so proud him... it's really a masterpiece of a scene. I know people who don't like Demon Slayer that have admitted that this episode is one of the best episodes in any anime they've seen.
Even though Demon Slayer might not be the greatest anime of all time, I think this is one of the best anime episodes of all time.
He does not know! HE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT IS COMING! He will snap in that chair when future fights will come!

About what happened to Nezuko: basically, she mastered her Blood Demon Art, which causes her blood to ignite. It’s important to remember that this isn’t just Tanjiro’s power up; he wasn’t able to cut the demon’s neck until Nezuko’s blood splatter on his sword ignited and gave his slice an extra boost. And how perfect is it that Tanjiro delivers the line “the bond between Nezuko and I can’t be severed by anyone” right at that moment?!

This episode broke the internet when it came out. Imo it's still the third best episode to release from the show. It rose the production quality for anime by such a large margin because of how much better the animation, sound design, etc. it had compared to other anime at the time.
As others have explained, there are 6 upper moons and 6 lower moons, and they are ranked by strength (there's some nuance there but I won't spoil). Rui could be considered the 11th strongest demon below Muzan. There's a pretty big jump between lower and upper moons but that will all be explained a lot more in the future

LET'S GOOOO EP 19! One of the best anime episode in anime history. Also it mustve been nice for Nezuko's voice actor to have a break from making cute noises to suddenly saying something as epic as ''Blood demon Art, EXPLOSIVE BLOOD'' and burn those threads like theyre nothing. Playing this OST while they both get their power-ups and get connected to their family roots, really broke us all down didnt it. Nice move, anime studio, nice move.

BTW Rui as the lower fifth mean he's actually the 11th weakest of the twelves. There is also a divide between the bottom 6 and the upper 6 in strength. He's the second weakest of the lower moons (Ergo the weaker ones.)

Shinobu and the other Hashira wouldn’t know Zenitsu because his Gramps is not his biological grandfather, that’s just his affectionate name for his master.
Also Tanjiro’s sword didn’t change color, that was Nezuko’s blood on his blade exploding into pink fire to give his slash the power it needed to cut Rui’s head off. They really did work together to beat him with a real family bond.
