- I think this film quotes it best: Shut...up! The Nostalgia Critic reviews The Princess Diaries 2.
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement is a 2004 American ruritanian romantic comedy film and the sequel to 2001's The Princess Diaries. Unlike the first film, this film is not based on any of the books. Most of the cast returned from the first film, including Julie Andrews, Anne Hathaway, Héctor Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo, and Larry Miller. Garry Marshall returned to direct and Debra Martin Chase and Whitney Houston to produce. New characters include Viscount Mabrey (John Rhys-Davies), Lord Nicholas Devereaux (Chris Pine, his film debut), and Andrew Jacoby (Callum Blue).

It's got Julie Andrews in it, therefore it's automatically bumped up from "terrible" to "mediocre".
Yup. She always makes things better
Flipping- Flerken you have seen this movie
He could work with Julie Andrews which is AWESOME. His biggest shame was the film Au-pair.
Nope
Julie Andrews is our queen, not queen of whatever kingdom was in this movie
I can't believe Stan Lee made a cameo in this movie
Stan Lee will cameo in anything at this point
His superhero name is Cameo.
Totally ruins the possible continuity of Idris Elba recruiting Ghost Rider for the Avengers.

"And now for the royal stunt double!" Actually it really is Julie Andrews. How cool is that?
ikr? I wonder if the mattress surfing thing was actually her idea.
not another theatre trash channel I agree
Idk why you'd need a stunt double for that
The movie's bad, but that's completely understandable.
Hey if Dick Van Dyke can dance in their '90's Julie Andrews can mattress surf and the song was put in because Julie Andrews had recovered from throat surgery and was confident enough to sing again not like she did before but still able to do it. It was actually an emotional moment for her and the rest of the cast.

In the middle of her wedding, Princess Mia abolishes the "heir-to-throne-must-get-married" rule.
Somewhere, Prince Charles is asking himself, "Why didn't I think of that?"
Perhaps because Prince Charles isn't the actual ruler of Britain.
I don't know what that means?
The villain must feel fooled by this

When John Rhys-Davies says “someone like me,” he looks so disappointed at having to say that line. It’s like he’s thinking “where did my life go so wrong?”
From Indiana Jones to Lord Of The Rings to this...
He’s internally thinking “maybe I should’ve agreed to doing more seasons of Sliders”
He could work with Dame Julie Andrews. It is still awesome
If Dial of Destiny is as bad as I expect, this won’t be the worst movie he’s ever been in.
That "aim to please" joke was genuinely clever. Great job guys, you've earned a sub!
Funny thing is men do have to be married before becoming king it has nothing to do with sexism its really only to ensure that there will be a successor to the throne so it doesn't end up in the hands of your second cousin three times removed who just so happens to be a bond villain
Yeah, anyone who knows anything about Britain's royal history know that shit gets fucked up real fast when you don't have a clear line of succession. Although that does make one wonder about gay kings and queens....
@@melodramaticdragon5826 Indeed. The War of Spanish Succession and War of Austrian Succession are proof.
@@melodramaticdragon5826 Gay kings and / or queens often basically have to bite it and do it.
I mean nowadays could probably a king just give a sperm sample, and get a "true heir" like that and have a "non sexual" wife and maybe have a male lover on the side or something like that...
But Yeah, generally they either don't become kings / queens or just have to bite together and do it.
@@melodramaticdragon5826 tbh most of the straight kings and queens wouldn't have necessarily been attracted to the people they were arranged to marry either, when arranged marriages were actually necessary for diplomacy they didn't start a bunch of melodrama about marrying for love, they just married who they were told to, whether there was attraction or not, and banged whoever the fuck they wanted, straight or gay, on the side because they're royalty.
@@emberalexander7444 Riiight and then they had lovers on the side.
Parliament meeting at the queens house isn't _that_ weird.
The British parliament meets at the Palace of Westminster, which is, in fact, a royal residence owned by the queen.
Is the Palace of Westminster in the north or the south of England?

Probably would have less people wanting to blow up parliament if they have it at the Queen's residence. Yes, looking at you, Guy Fawkes and your friend V.

You'll be missed. But, we'll always remember you in... ...princess diaries "sigh" 2.
Honestly, I think "It wasn't her, it was a ghost! Oooooooo..." is so stupid and bad that it's actually kinda funny.
I think it is a blatant remark to the fact that this movie is not supposed to be taken seriously. The whole movie is like a bunch of friends making a dumb movie together just for the fun of it, and getting your super cool grandma to co-star in it.
Me too and that pot banging was the funniest thing in the world to me as a child.
I laughed at both that and the pot joke. Not the pot joke itself but the Queen's reaction to it, but "it wasn't her, it was a ghost" was genuinely such a non-smooth recovery on the maid's part that it's hilarious that THAT was what she came up with rather than LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE. hahahahah.
I agree lol it swung too far in the "bad" direction it came all the way back around to be funny again, even if it's funny in a different way than they probably intended

What's funny is the Mia Thermopolis in the books was a brash, loud-mouthed political activist. She was a vegan, she wore combat boots, like she had a clear, undeniable character. She was not pretty, she did not have men drooling all over her, and she cared very deeply and very passionately about being a good leader. In fact, that was what made her NOT want to be a leader in the first place. But once she comes to terms with it, she really embraces the idea. It's so, so, so sad that Meg Cabot's character, who was a CHARACTER, with both likeable and unlikeable personality traits, was reduced to... to.... this.
2fast 2furious Mia's character sometimes annoyed me but I cannot deny the fact that these books helped me understand what taking responsibilities and growing up meant when I was 10/11. She was quite different form the character I usually saw and I'm also very sad of what they did of her
She inspired me to be vegetarian and care about the environment, she's a good role model, she works hard at algebra even though she's not good at it.
Not my favourite character, but I have to admit that book-Mia was both well-written and interesting.
2fast 2furious actually mia was vegetarian, even ate meat in the ninth book and WAS pretty, which was why lilly was so mad with her makeover in the first place. also she DID have guys droolig over her e.g. kenny and j.p. lol did we read the same books. anne's potrayal in the films were pretty okay i think. and i also loved how the books actually referenced the first film in the fourth book
What? Mia was shy, socially awkward, rarely stood up for herself, was "secretly pretty all along", had 2 guys have a crush on her (one went kinda crazy over it), gushed over cute boys. Nothing wrong with any of that.
"I believe I will be a great queen. I love Genovia. You think I would be up here in a wedding dress if I didn't?"
You wouldn't even marry for the betterment of your country.
Blue Nimbus but how would you know it would be for the countries betterment? What if the arranged partner drags the country down but you can’t divorce him because that would ruin the alliance?
@@Headpfones The getting married to rule clause is there to provide an heir and prevent a succession crisis

Except that's never even remotely stated to be the case in the movie and has rarely even been a ruling in real life monarchies. There are dozens of examples of unwed monarchs ascending the throne throughout history and plenty who died childless.
In terms of the movie, it's all but outright stated it's just an outdated sexist double standard with no real purpose behind it.

A princess of a european monarchy, that adds no real political direction to the country, and it's only there for social events, taking pictures with orphans and other important figures, and to spend ludicrously huge amounts of money.
Maybe not other thing, but this movie depicted very effectively the job of 21st century royal families.
Who are over glorified mascots.
Sounds about right
The royal families, specifically the one of the UK makes shit loads of money for the country (not to mention creates a sense of national unity). Check out the CGP Grey video called "The True Cost of the Royal Family Explained".
I feel like that's most governments in one way or another.
That's true... but The Princess Diaries seem to indicate that the Queen has a more active role in their country's government than that... I could be wrong, though.
I watch this channel and Cinema Sins as a way to watch bad movies without actually watching them, you really see all you need of a crap movie in 15-20 minutes. My god, this one sucked. So. Hard.

Yeah, it's an effective method as you don't have to spend any money on the movie either!
The same reason I watch AVGN. Will I ever have all those consoles he has? Will I ever play these games? The answer to both questions is negative.
Same... But unfortunately... I have seen this movie... in full... *sobs*

They should have a third movie to round off the trilogy where the people witness the pointless opulence of the royale family and revolt in a horrendously brutal and violent Genovian Revolution backed by the US to create a Democracy, but instead backfires and ends with a Peoples Republic of Genovia with the former princess and he rlover being the only ones to survive the ensuing massacre. They then work hard to escape the country and live out their lives in Great Britain, keeping a low profile and living a modest hardworking life.
Yeah, like that would result in something good like in the past, all the U. S. back down "revolutions" always resulted in even worse regimes, because the U. S. were always fond of the puppet dictatorships, known your history before posting bullshit in internet.

Which is funny considering even if he did marry her that wouldn’t automatically make him king. A common misconception. He’d still be a prince and have little power compared to her, but I guess the author of the book and director of the movie didn’t think to research that.
This plotline doesn't exist in the book, and I know this is 10 months after your comment but I needed to clean Meg Cabot's name because the books are actually really good !
Well I think if they have to get married to become king or queen then the whole get married then become king/queen
They touched on this in the film. Mabrey said: "I put in the work to make you a king, not to have you marry a queen."

What critic said about the film pretending to be moralistic and inspiring for the youth when all it really wants is your money and attention is a perfect analysis of the pandering Disney Channel teenybopper fluff you see a lot.
I don't really see how this movie was supposed to be moralistic or inspiring. I've only ever seen it as a silly bit of fun. All the actors and actresses seemed to be having a fun time while making this, and it comes off as being one of those silly movies that people enjoy simply because it makes them smile. I don't think it was supposed to be anything important, more like an excuse to get the cast back together, tie up the loose end about the Queen and her bodyguard, and get the chance to mattress surf while also singing karaoke.
Welcome to the Metaverse Just like how I feel about the upcoming Lps series.
Chexpet He still makes a good point though.
It's also kind of funny how Disney channel films often have a message about being an individual when pretty much all Disney channel stars have the exact same clothing style and hairstyle. All the guys have the same side-parting bowl cut, and all the girls have the same medium-length wavy hair.
Welcome to the Metaverse Basically the MLP movie in a nutshell. And just to be clear yes I mean the new one, not the one from 1986 though I’m sure that was just as bad.
I would love this movie if at the wedding the villain said "The Lannisters send their regards."
Stannis Baratheon Oh it would have made things so much better.
And no doubt ending the movie in a massacre where he kills every worthless soul in the room. Watering the ground with the blood of royals and innocent civilians
As a teenage boy I actually liked these movies. Maybe it was because of a celeb crush, or I legitimate laughed at how dumb it was.
The VGC Sometimes, we don't even understand ourselves, man.
The books were decent though. Of course they were nothing like the movies.
Alexandra jackson Yeah. The queen is more likable in the movies.
The first film is harmless.
The VGC I still do. It's ironic enjoyment
Alexandra jackson I loved the books. They were hilarious and relatable since Mia seems more self-deprecating in them
The reason the first movie worked so well for a lot of us was that it was RELATABLE while still being comedic. As teenage girls, we found it compelling. Maybe none of us ever became princesses in an incredible twist of fate, but we all went through feeling left out, having conflicts with our friends and families as our lives changed, feeling like we didn’t fit in, wanting to change things for the better and not knowing how. And even as adults we still love it because we may not be teenage girls anymore, but we remember how all of that felt. All of that just goes right out the window in this movie. No teenage girl could relate to this movie or any of the relationships in it and that’s sad.
22:38-22:48 I loved Tamara's Dora bit. That was really funny.
That’d be awesome in that Dora live action movie.

Did she go to Community college? You don't graduate at 18 and finish university at 21 unless you are RIDICULOUSLY hard working. And considering what we've seen of Mia's life up to that point, I doubt she busted ass to finish in 2 1/2 -3 years.
Jazzypants2007 It’s not common but it is possible. It all depends if her Highschool allowed college credits or the amount of requirements for her major.

This is the problem with books being turned into movies, everyone has their own idea of how things happened and their own idea of what the characters look like. It doesn't matter how well these things are described in the books, everyone will always have their own view of how things should be and they'll have their own expectations of how it should be if it were turned into a movie. When I read a book, I know for me at least, it's like a movie playing in my head, I picture how I see things and my mind takes it from there. But when a book is made into a movie, everyone is expecting their own version of the book and how they imagined it to be. Not everyone will have the same image and going to see a movie that's based off of a book, you have to go in understanding that the creator made the movie based on how he interpreted the book. Point is, it's going to be different for everyone.
To be fair, often events and characters that were memorable in the books are cut or added in movies.
though sometimes an adaptation are just shitty movies on their own. *THE HOBBIT*
or the book was already bad. *READY PLAYER ONE*
or they simply didn't care about adapting nor even try to do their own thing. you get the idea...

Actually, the Barbie Princess & the Pauper movie teaches you more about being royalty than this movie does. Thinking back, that movie was one of the best in my childhood, because it was a fun, well written story that had interesting female characters and a good message. That was before the time when barbie movies were nothing but pink rainbow barf. That movie was so much better than this one in every way, and the songs were phenomenal.

Honestly, given how royalty usually works, the two of them should've just got pushed into marrying eachother in the beginning. Problem solved.

When I originally watched this video years ago, I made a comment about how I wanted to see HyperFanGirl rule 34. It got over 200 likes. Close to 300, I think.
Amy Wang Oh, how the times have changed.
Now you got my 1 like. At least it's something.
Ionlymadethistoleavecoments Thank you, sir. I'll savor it. Make it last.
Have you found any?
Calvin Cocoa Nothing good...
Santa Christ vs rob
Nostalgic critic vs Doug
Benny vs Malcom
Hyper fan girl vs Tamara
If I got the names wrong someone tell me
Nope, right on the money!
Just gonna point out nostalgia critic gave some of the best relationship advice without even thinking
"I have DEFINITELY underestimated the perks of dating a psychopath"
It seems like every time the the scene where the maids bang the pots together, a good joke dies.
Don't think i didn't notice that ps3 controlller wasn't synced!
Got to bring the important issues up!
@Arjun and Arnav Menon Even I knew that.
@Arjun and Arnav Menon What? Malcolm and Doug were fighting over a PS3 controller. PS3 controllers have four small lights on the top. PS4 has one large one.
Every time I see John Rhys-Davies in a role, I keep expecting his dimensional counterpart and the rest of the Sliders to pop in.
Rest in peace Stan Lee.
ya know, during that slumber party scene, i kinda thought that it showed that even though these girls are royalty, they are still just girls and they like to have fun like anyone else would.
I will only add that she went to collage for politics and international relations so maybe teaching her the customs of the royal family of her kingdom is something she needs to learn since I dont think school has like... country-specific culture classes?
I constantly get Princess Diaries and The Princess Bride mixed up. i dont know why.
*Princess* Dairies
*Princess* Bride
Gee, I WONDER why...? 🤔
That's ok, I often confuse The Last Starfighter with Flight of the Navigator.
"I am Groot!"
Yes you were, Stan
if it has a stan lee cameo its a marvel movie.
Hold on. 8:33 "my nephew's mother was my wife's sister"? That's some incest right there.
liftlash98 incest is the best
I did the math because I'm bored. His nephew's mother would be his sister. His wife's sister would be both his and his wife's sister, which would mean his wife is also his sister. Dude married his sister.
Gaige the Mechromancer even better.
actually, your wife's sibling's child is also your nephew.
If your nephew's mother is someone unrelated who married your brother and she's your wife's sister, that just means you and your brother married a pair of sisters... I think.
