    I heard some people mock the Kilo for its unusually large hull for a diesel submarine. One thing I want to point out, this is a huge bonus. Hull size barely affects noise, but it allows to install a lot of noise suppression equipment and internal rubber barriers, making it much quieter and being the true innovation compared to previous soviet electric boats. Moreover, this allows to install more batteries, extending the operational range, a spherical sonar, more weapons and more space for the crew.

    These Kilo Class Submarines are wickedly capable in their own territorial waters, not as much when they try to conduct global operations. Love that you included the Kilo operators info, nice addition.

    For ambushing US surface assets at choke points like the Bashi Strait, the AIP Yuans would be far superior than the Improved Kilo due to submerged endurance.

    • @jamesmandahl444
      @jamesmandahl444 Před 2 lety +3

      Eh the sterling AIP doesnt actually give a lot more life than even the improved kilo without AIP. The new trend is ditching AIP for upgrade to new generation batteries for subs that would give even greater autonomy underwater than older style AIP.

    So I’m watching this in the last days of 2022 and it has been said Ukraine may receive sea king helicopters from the British.
    If they sent Ukraine one with anti submarine submarine equipment still aboard. How could we expect them to do. Now below is a scenario I could see taking place but don’t know how it would go down because I don’t have the knowledge of both submarine and helicopter
    I imagine a scenario where Russia launches a missile attack and a kilo class sub takes part but Nato surveillance aircraft were able to get a fix in the missile launch point. And it just so happens Ukraine has this freshly delivered hypothetical anti submarine sea king helicopters ready to scramble to that location from Odessa to try to attack the sub. Would they probably have luck finding the kilo class sub or would it be to quiet to precisely locate. Moral of the story would it get away because of being quiet or would the Ukrainians have enough information to work with that the sub would be at serious risk from this helicopter and it attacking.

    • @EurasiaNaval
      @EurasiaNaval  Před rokem +1

      I don't know how that scenario will play out, but I think 'quietness' won't be the deciding factor in whether the ASW helo will find the sub. If the missile launch location is fixed in a timely manner, and the helo arrives shortly, it is likely to use a dipping sonar to search for the sub. Dipping sonars are generally active sonars, and likely able to find the Kilo in the shallow waters of the Black Sea. The Kilo uses a teardrop hull, without any stealth design, and by your scenario it won't have time to get away far enough, so it is likely to be detected. Quietness is unlikely to be important, because active sonars do not rely on external noise source. But other factors, like whether Russia can shoot the helo down before it arrives, or the depth of that specific part of the sea (allowing thermoclines to form), will matter.

    • @aaronstreeval3910
      @aaronstreeval3910 Před rokem +1

      @@EurasiaNaval interesting, that actually answers a lot of my question. I’m not a master In anti submarine warfare so I didn’t know how well the helicopter would find the submarine ect.
      Another question hope you don’t mind I’ve got so many questions about the Russian navy in regards to the ongoing war. Do you think Russia will be able to continue to produce the gorshgov frigates or do they rely on to much foreign components no longer accessible for constructing anything beyond a frigate.
      I hope that question makes sense

    • @andrygugli1928
      @andrygugli1928 Před rokem

      Ok, so you are telling me that in the first place, that helicopter can reach the launch point far in the sea from Odessa. Now, even if it could, a lot of time would pass, and the Kilo would have already left the area. What is more, there are russian surface warships in that area, carrying the Shtil anti-air missile, which they could use to take out the helicopter as soon as it exits ukrainian coastal airspace. Now, those missiles have been fired at live aerial targets, such as Bayraktars, and I doubt a helicopter has a chance against them. So there are 3 points that completely put this option aside, and all steam from the fact that the range of the Kalibr allows Kilos to launch them from almost anywhere in the Black Sea

    • @andrygugli1928
      @andrygugli1928 Před rokem

      @@EurasiaNaval I agree with your points, but it is important to note that the sub will likely be out of the helo's "active" range, and that the threat from russian surface warships prevents these types of sorties.
