    Loved the Video , very Informative, I have a question about Revitalizing the soil in a 20 gallon barrel where a 6 foot Bismark Palm tree has rooted itself. I have been contemplating using Vermicule & perlite at the top of the soil so it eventually soaks into the soil. I have no intention of removing th ep[almt tree from the barrel for the next year or two until i can acquire land to plant it. SO my only alternative righ now is to just reinvigorate the soil as best i can so they can absorb nutrients.. The palm trees have for sure rooted in the entire barrel so these no way for me to remove and replace soill. The water is soaking into the soil 2-3 seconds after i soak it weekly so the soikl does have a thic sandy consistency, not mud, which is a positive thing, i thnik i can extend its life, Any advice is welcome

The leaves and spear seemed to be browning. I was told to add epsom salt, fertilizer for palms and baking soda to the soil. Phoenix sylvestris, genetically have a golden orange color in the leaf bases and leaf stems. At times this coloring, can be misunderstood as a nutritional deficiency, however it is not so! Be sure to look out for Magnesium deficiency and Potassium deficiency which can develope if the palm is not fertilized every three months!

    You mention magnesium deficiency in Fl soil. What about Manganese which that deficiency causes frizzle top on queen palms? Is that as common as magnesium deficiency?

    • @EarthWorksJax
      @EarthWorksJax  Před 3 lety +2

      Via David: Magnesium deficiencies are more common and frequent in Phoenix palms, like Phoenix Canariensis and Phoenix Syvestris. This can be seen as yellow on the borders of the palm leaves, on either side of the rachis. A Manganese deficiency will show short, necrotic deformed leaves in the center of the palm, particularly in the new growth! The leaves will also appear to have been burned as the end are brown. A Maganese deficiency is a more severe deficiency, that needs to be corrected in a timely matter, if left untreated, the palm will decline rapidly within several months, whereas a Magnesium deficiency can persist for years without killing the palm.

    • @datsuntoyy
      @datsuntoyy Před 3 lety +3

      I'm in Phoenix, AZ and we seem to love queen palms here. Manganese deficiency is a major issue here with them. I recently bought a bag thats 15%mn, 5%mg and 15%s. There isn't a decent looking queen palm almost anywere you find one, they do not like the heat, the soil or the lack of nutrients.

    • @toddfromflorida
      @toddfromflorida Před 3 lety +3

      @@datsuntoyy I understand that for sure. Where I live we have the same deficiency. What I did was not only fertilize with normal palm fertilizer but also use Manganese Sulfate Monohydrate Powder from Amazon. You can get 3 lbs for around $20 and it will supplement that mineral specifically so you dont get frizzletop. You still need to feed the regular palm fertilizer because manganese isnt all you need obviously. But that is a great way to help the palms with manganese specifically.

      No. As long as they get the correct amount of light and water. if your porch is open air, that is good for humidity. if it is indoors and air-conditioned your plants may need a humidifier or some time outdoors intermittently

      Flush soil with lots of water and if using a granular fertilizer see if any can be removed without damaging the root system.
