Don, great advice whether you are at home living your daily life or on vacation. Crimes happens everywhere but most people are oblivious. We’ve also reached a point where you have to be alert even in the best neighborhoods. Thanks for stating the hard truth on this. This may be one of your best videos ever.
My wife and I were in Belize and we left the cruise port to see the town. We crossed over a bridge and I stopped looked at my wife and we both turned around and did our shopping in the cruise port.
I did the same, yet I did cross the bridge. It was disgusting and drug abuse abuse was relevant. A local approached me and said don't cross the bridge. I have been back but won't go to town
Some people will carry a "fake" wallet with a few dollars and expired credit cards in case of being mugged. Also some cruise ships are moving away from having foreign currencies on the cruise ships. Credit cards and ATMs from big banks are often the best way to deal with foreign currency if you have the cards that don't charge extra fees. Just be aware of your surroundings with ATMs and maybe keep your cash in small amounts on separate areas on your person, so in case some is stolen you still have backup cash.
Such good information. We were in Stockholm at the "Nobel Museum" , and while we were having lunch there a older fellow had his back pack stolen with his passport, money and camera equipment while he went up to the lunch buffet for his soup. We felt so sorry for the guy. Never leave anything unattended.
I carry a small Travelon backpack. It has steel cable in the straps and zippers that have clasps. I wear it in front rather than on my back and wrap my arms around it when in crowds.
As always, Don, you provide good advice. These tips bear repeating often. We've been cruising over 30 years now and have encountered very aggressive vendors in several locations. We always try to be as careful as possible and aware of our surroundings while travelling.
I got pick pocketed in San francisco at the wharf, one of our ports. Didn't even know till I got called by my bank. Crowded stores and lifted my wallet. Used 3 cards right away at Target for $500 each, my ID and cruise card. Now I am way more cautious.
In shops and markets do not accept free gifts especially in the Caribbean. The free gift then becomes the catch for you to buy something from the stall, ' oh return my favour and buy something ' and all of a sudden you are alone in a crowd. Politely say no thank you and move on.
I learned yesterday that on my next cruise, we where supposed to stop in Ocho Rios in Jamaica due to security reason and pier repairs. We will instead go to Cozumel. It's a musical cruise (Cruise to the Edge), so the destinations are not that important, but instead of a stop in Jamaica and anther in Grand Cayman, we will go to two different ports in Cozumel. There are other places near Cozumel that would have been interesting as a second stop.
You should never take the cloth bags that the cruise lines give you with their name on it when visiting a port. That makes it very obvious that you are a tourist. Don, Thank You for this video. This is a great reminder for everyone to be very careful.
It's funny that we get all these travel advisories for other countries. Do we look at all that goes on right here in these United States? We have much more going on here every day.
A money belt is nothing compared to the skills of professional pick pockets- they actually prefer you wear a money belt than just carrying a wallet in your front pocket 🤷🏼♀️ nothing will stop a professional pick pocket- especially a money belt, that’s child’s play for them.
@@QueenKayKay47 Thanks. We were all stood up. This guy was bouncing around the bus, it was a bit bumpy but he was exaggerating it. Next thing I know I was 20 euros light!! It's a shame because the rest of the people in the town were lovely.
This was great advise Don!! I typically travel solo and I’m at the point where I’m either staying at port, or taking cruise excursion even if it is more expensive. At least they know where I should be
Good tips. We were robbed in Grand Cayman. Someone saw us buy some jewelry in a store and then followed us to a bench while we were waiting for the bus. Apparently they lifted the bag while we weren’t looking. We didn’t notice until we were on the ship.
My cross body also holds a drink bottle and well as a zippered pocket big enough for my wallet phone, old phone as a camera (it's set back to factory settings and i keep it for photos especially if i need someone to take a pic of me), and a charger. I also jury rigged it so they're a strap that goes around my upper stomach so it's attached to me in two ways.
Thank you for the info. Sometimes we know but this is a good reminder as well. I will go further to say even in our own home town or city this information is important to practice.
Having visited 102 countries/islands I have seen it all. I worked in NYC for 17 years & learned to always be aware of your surroundings. On the subway, a man put his hand in my back pocket to grab my wallet. Without even turning around I grabbed his hand and bent his fingers back until he screamed. I hope he thought twice about doing this again. I learned not to keep my wallet in my back pocket.
Situational awareness is always key. Try to look like the most ordinary, boring person possible to not attract unwanted attention. Keep your eye and ears open, and trust your instincts. If you're getting bad vibes from somewhere/something, leave right away. Better to be safe than sorry.
I leave my wedding rings and jewelry at home. I don’t wear a backpack. I use a crossover bag that is carried in front. I also have a bag that is custom made with a chain and lock on it if we go to the beach. Lock it up to a tree.
Princess announced on our last cruise to leave your passport on the ship in your safe. They said if anything happens on shore where you need it they will help you and bring it to you
Good advice. My friend "lost" her coin purse where she had all her money. Yes, all her money! She took everything with her off the ship and it was all gone.
Thanks for the p4acrical advice. Some things I already knew and a few things, especially, the new stuff I appreciated learning so I can keep traveling safely.
Great safety methods for everyone to use. This past fall while on our Mediterranean cruise there was a women robbed at the pre cruise hotel. She was checking in, had removed her passport from her purse, which was atop her suitcase beside her, to give to the desk clerk as required. She turned to put in back into her purse and it was gone. Hard lesson to learn! I now forget the purse and carry a very thin RFID travel wallet, with a little cash, a picture ID and one credit card, which I carry in my pant front pocket. If I’m near a group of people, my hand goes into that pocket while I walk. Keep safe everyone, look around, always!
Thanks for the tips. I had $100 taken from my passport wallet because I didn’t have it under my shirt and I was on trains and busses in Rome. I wear a crossbody purse when needed and have the waterproof phone case that I stick cash and a credit card in with my phone when I swim. They also make anti theft fabrics and safes that lock to your beach chairs.
Don you give us lots of good information.and I appreciate it.me and my husband don't go out at night.and stay close together during the day.good job don
Great advice Don. Next month I am going on Celebrity Apex for a week doing a Western Caribbean. I was told by many people not to get off 5he ship in Belize. I have been told that violent criminals are on the rise. I will be happy to make that a sea day for me. My mom 91 and my aunt 94 are going as well as some cousins my age (57). I take care of my mom 5 days a week and feel guilty going to port and leaving her and my aunt alone so I will be getting off the ship only once and that's in Cozumel to an all inclusive called Mr. Sancho's beach club. About $70 but includes your drinks and food. Has anyone out there gone to Mr. Sancho's? I would like to know if it's a good place to go. J. From the Shiplife goes there and speaks highly about it.
I use a Travelon backpack, wear in front, it has many security features. Also I never bring my good jewellry, and lastly please be aware of your surroundings. I am a single senior traveller, be aware but remember to enjoy!
Thanks for the great advice and reminders, Don! My husband usually carries his wallet (with very little in it) in his front pocket, but I think I'm going to get him one of those neck wallets for our next cruise.
Maybe I missed it in the segment, but also a reminder for the ladies to be careful of their alcohol intake in public. Not saying don't have an adult beverage or two, but be careful of the quantity of drinks. Nefarious people can be waiting in the sidelines for a drunk woman or two to stumble down that shaded roadway. If you/your group is going to heavily imbibe, make sure someone stays sober and can be the outlook/voice of reason. Looking back on my younger days, I am lucky nothing happened to me while traveling. I certainly wouldn't do it now.
My husband and I take turns going into the ocean while the other watches our things on the beach. Some places have lockers you can place your things into but how can you trust the staff unless you can bring your own lock. I would not carry a backpack on my back. I carry a sling bag that I can carry on my front, and can hold onto it. It holds my passport, 1 credit card, cash, etc. I don’t wear my nice wedding ring. I wear only a small band. No other jewelry and not my Apple Watch. I have a cheap $10 watch that doesn’t change time when we go port to port.

Exactly what and where we kept on going. On Christmas Day years ago and got robbed by a bicyclist, spent the day at the police station
If you speak Spanish it is very safe.

Good tip on zippered pockets being a pickpocket deterrent. Velcro’d pocket flaps work too.

Not really
Very good advice we were blessed with my brother and sister we never left sight even waited by restrooms.
Thanks for the reminder you can never be too careful.
Great advice Don.
Thanks Don. I always used a money belt. This information is not only for cruising. Its good info when going anywhere crowded or the parks

I wear my money belt inside my pants. I hope they aren't so good that they'll be able to steal that? @@allytrudie864
Thank you Don for the invaluable information!
Great safety tips we all need to be reminded.
😢 sad we can't enjoy our vacation without looking over our shoulders, under the ankles, walking backwards, wearing our pockets inside out 😅
Same issues in most populated cities in the US
Thanks Don. We are leaving on March 9th for a 12-night cruise. I will keep all your tips in mind.
Thank you Don for all your information, we watch you daily and have made you a part of our family.
Great advice, thanks Don. 👍

I got mugged in Toloun, France, on the bus!

Good tip for the jewelery. I am quite self-aware, but I hadn't considered that.

Safety first without a doubt. We wandered off in Belize City on Christmas Day and were robbed in a neighborhood
I am so sorry.
Thanks Don, for your reminders on safety.
Great advice; thanks, Don. Hope your sister is feeling better!
Good advice Don. Thanks and take care everyone
Fantastic tips about safety.
Enjoy your presentations.
Fantastic Advice…buy your jewelry in America. We know someone who bought a Rolex on a cruise got back to America and it was fake.
You always have good advice,Don.
Good pointers, Don!
All good advice. Thank you. We have used water wallets around our neck to keep the seapass card, ID, a credit card and a small amount of cash.
