    In terms of driving style Piquet was one of the cleanest ever. He wasted no space on the track and almost never touched the kerbs. He was also great on carrying speed into the corners.

    Nelson Piquet is a tremendous talent who was quick and had strong engineering skills. He knew when to take risk and when not to. Nelson was worthy World Champion. Much of the development with Manual gearboxes were fading at this time as they were preparing for automated boxes we would see today (the art of is gone). Funny about manual gearboxes, when I was at Detroit and Montreal GP's, you could actually hear the "different" personalities of the drivers when they downshifted....now, with the automation, the drivers make the same sound.

      Piquet was an extremely lucky driver. All 3 championships he was not the fastest driver and took advantage of unreliability and crashes of others.

Nigel had 0 wins with the odd podium and always was outdriven by Elio DeAngelos many times, when Piquet has amassed 13 wins and two world titles in 81 and 83. 84 he achieved a record amount of poll positions. What did Mansell achieve. Yes nothing. He was only good when he had the engine and the car.

      +Niderfyn You said a couple of misinformation. so if you dont mind...
      Japan 1990- others made mistakes, he didnt: Berger spun on the sand from the Senna-Prost collision, Mansell broke the car, check the video of the violent start after pitstop, he did the same thing in 1986 Brands hatch.
      Australia 1990- he started 7th, passed Patrese, Alesi, Prost, Berger and Mansell on track all the while preserving his tyres cause he was on a non stop. Meanwhile Mansell cooked up his tyres chasing Senna, so he had to pitstop; It was a great chase. It was pretty much a spotless perfomance (he ran wide at one corner about 3 laps to go, probably due to old tyres or worn brakes but held it)
      Indy 1992 - he didnt complain cause of lack of caution lights, just the opposite. There is an interview of him to brazilian reporter saying that there is to much yellow flags on the track, that you always end up lacking practice laps because you have to go to a pitstop.
      The crash was probably his mistake. He saw the yellow flags again, he quickly calculated if he pits right that moment, he could squeeze another lap before end of the session . He lifted of gas pedal too abruptly sending the car in to the wall. Indy is a very unforgiving place.
      There is an interview of him saying it was his mistake. Probably something written by Mike Doodson or something in portuguese I forgot.
      His replacement was Al Unser SENIOR not Junior. But you are right, the car was competitive, he ended up 3rd.
      Piquet is my alltime favourite so I just dont like wrong details.
      Nelson was always very honest, no bullshits. If he made a mistake he wasnt bsing anyone.

      Yes,he smashed into the concrete wall at Tamburello curve because of tyre or suspension
      failure.After his retirement he revealed his eyesight problem...He claimed that he still felt competitive when chasing other cars but not so confident when there were no cars in front of him and he couldn't evaluate braking points as quickly as his opponents could do.
      Hence,from that bad day he just went for the money until he retired.Smart guy and great driver.

    Did they change anything post the Senna incident? I don't know the corner's name but after Tamborelli where Senna went off, it looks very gradual whereas recollecting from memory, the turns following it were more elongated and the cars had to slow down more famously or infamously where Yuji Ide would go off and take out Minardi's driver who's name escapes me.

    • @FormulaTurismo
      @FormulaTurismo Před 6 lety +4

      The circuit was changed completly after the Senna accident. Tamburello (where Senna was killed) and Villeneuve (where Ratzenberger was killed) were changed to left right chicanes. Variente Bassa was changed from a right left left right chicane to a small curve to the right then a left right chicane. The Rivazza corners were pulled back allowing for greater run off. Acque Minerale was however restored to its original form in order to retain some of the circuits speed however similar to Rivazza it was pulled back allowing for great run off. The only 2 corners that have remained unchanged in the circuits history are Tosa and Piratella.

    • @armorgeddon
      @armorgeddon Před 6 lety

      While in general the big layout change wasn't any good for the spectacle of course (Tamburello was ok-ish, but Villeneuve chicane was lame) I loved what they did to Aque Minerali. So awesome seeing fast cars and Superbikes coming down the hill from Piratella, swinging through the right hander, braking immidiately after cornering for the second left that offers great yet challenging use of the insinde and outside curbs and it's uphill again.
      The second big change of the circuit was kind of ridicolous with the curvy start-finish-straight being as dangerous as the original Tamburello.

      Laurence Oliveri i dont think they would have enough downforce to take tamburello flat out. Also tamburello was flat and bumby rather than banked and smooth like the oval tracks nascar uses. They would either have to break like an f1 car going around old 130r or lift and coast around it.

    Manual gearbox was a good thing. It was so difficult to steer and shift once, If they shift wrong gear engine broken. And today: Hamilton have just to steer, every other things are made the car himself or is controlled by the pits team. Middle 80s up to early 90s was the golden age of formula one

      The current layout is pretty fast again, LMP1 cars are approaching Tamburello at 200 mph, but with the curved start-finish-"straight" and full throttle from Rivazza to Tamburello chicane it became pretty dangerous again. Very strange to create such a layout.

I would like to see anyone else on this posting try to make every lap a perfect one with very little automation to these cars. In fact, for those douc*ebags who like automated boxes, go back to your video game and be like everyone else who needs drivers aids and skinny cars to give their best.....Sad

      Yeah it looked like an amazing circuit. But I guess it just wasn't safe enough. The events of 94 showed it. Also, Gerhard Berger and Nelson Piquet had big crashes at Tamburello previously. When things go wrong on a dangerous track (even if it's excellent to race on), it ends in tragedy. RIP, Senna and Ratzenberger x

    • @gufo_tave
      @gufo_tave Před 6 lety

      Also, there is a problem in the old Tamburello corner: there is no literally room to make larger escape zone, because of a river right after the wall.
      And if you wonder why there is a river so close to the track, the answer is simple: Imola's track was originally a semi-permanent circuit (the zone between Tosa and Piratella was built to close the circuit), like Spa.
      BTW, in the late 2000's, it was removed the Variante Bassa, in order to make the track faster.

    I grew up watching the current Imola layout. I don't see how one change to the Tamburollo (sp?) section made this track impossible to overtake. I see other areas where if you're brave or nuts, i.e Montoya, Raikkonen, then overtaking may not be impossible.

    • @shazmeister2005
      @shazmeister2005 Před 7 lety +1

      It did though. Prior to that as you can see in the video it was flat out from the chicane leading onto the pit straight right to the Tosa hairpin. Cars could slipstream right down the pit straight through Tamburello and Villeneuve and outbreak the car in front. The Villeneuve / Tosa section was great for overtaking you could either go inside through Villeneuve and round the outside of Tosa or outside Villeneuve and inside Tosa, watch Villeneuve himself and Pironi at the 1982 race if you want to see overtaking.
