Ed Sheeran came by the studios at 102.7 KIIS-FM to give JoJo and some fans a quick demonstration on how he builds a song all with only his guitar and a loop machine!
using a loop pedal live for many hours is no joke. There are many possibilities where you can make mistakes while playing. Ed doesn’t get recognition he deserves when it comes to loop pedal. He's basically producing a song live in front of you. And young girls nowadays be like "he's just a guitar man" only because he's not dancing or doing any crazy stuff on stage like kpop artists or new pop singers who are always lip syncing on stage since dancing and singing it's really hard. I'd rather watch a performance with loop pedals in live, than lip sync performances, that's why i love Ed
yeah ever since he's upgraded to the chewwie pedal and lately the custom "Sheeran " looper for the mathematics tour i've begun appreciating him more. I bought an RC-30 after saving up for 2 years from my part-time job, its only when i began looping myself i realised how complex and difficult it can get. TIMING IS LITERALLY EVERYTHING!!
The impressive part is that he gets all of the loops in a single pass, properly timed, and blending together properly so that it sounds like a full band. Yeah, it is just one guitar, and he isn't playing anything mind blowingly difficult, but he puts together so many different sounds that all go together amazingly. He takes one instrument and makes a band. I'll check out your channel to see what you can do with one guitar.
I agree it's timing. I used to play around with the best equipment money could buy when I worked for a Pro Audio company... and this is still mind blowing.
It’s actually quite simple. What isn’t simple, is combining all the layers in to one sound, if you get what I mean. It’s way harder than it looks - he isn’t playing anything super complicated on the guitar, but it is not easy at all to get it to sound right. One small timing/note screw up in just a single layer of the 6-7 layers he lays down here, and it’ll sound all fucked up. He truly is insanely talented, and has spent thousands of hours on the loop pedal.
I see: I have to do another million tutorials like this one ... ... and then still have enough problems with my little looping station... What a genius in music, humor and sympathy !
He's not a novice, he's a standard intermediate player, but what makes him different is the smart ways of using the knowledge he has on guitar, and make interesting sound combinations out of it.
@rabashibarabasha it's not the individual pieces that make him great, it's how he can put it together with ease. He is a one man band and studio with very little equipment or tools. Not to mention that he constantly improvises and changes up his songs, further expressing his talent. Any guitarist can practice scales for hours and hours and eventually master them. It takes a true musician to put together layers of basic sounds and make them sound extraordinary.
I've got the same pedal - it's a lot of fun but I'm not sure that the dual pedal RC30 is better than 2x singles. It offers quite a lot less options and is harder to work with realtime, but it's only like $50 cheaper than two solo's
It's called timing but now the pedals time stretch and quantize in real time so it's not as hard as it used to be with old school gear. Used to play over a tape echo loop,
Humble question: that works for a song which uses the same chord (2 or 4 or how many ever) progression. How does one use looper when chord progressions change, day from verse to chorus to back to verse and then to bridge, etc?
How do you remember the order in which you recorded all the layers, in case you want to leave a few out for a few rounds and then add them back later on? And if not, the point is just to add and add more layers?
+Eline Mann Music I'm pretty sure the only way to remember your layers like that is to practice it and have it down until you know exactly what you want and can do it perfect every time. I just bought my RC-30 loop station which is what he is using in this video and the only way to remove tracks at all after they have been recorded is to "undo" and even then you can only take the last one that has been recorded. Even for that to work you have to have stopped the recording and started a new one. If you were in overdub mode it will take away everything you just did. The point is just to add and add, or add until you are happy with how it sounds. Its up to the musician to record their layers in a way that works for them
Does this loop pedal let you record voice but then use the voice recoding separate to the guitar So I can press on the backing (guitar) and then sometimes add harmonies?
Samantha's channel I have the RC-50, which is a little different then his in this video. Both of them allow you to turn each phrase on and off, once it is built. The RC-50 allows you to undo your most recent recording without destroying everything you've built already.
+SammyT_Music WhosChina is incorrect. You can only start/stop either the left track completely (guitar) or the right track completely (vocals). You cant pick and choose what layers you want to move, after they have been recorded they meld together into one looping track, unless as Cambridge said you undo the most recent track.
He's a standard. You're forgetting that what makes his music great is the lack of complication he puts in it. I'm aware that this isn't the best side of his guitar skill, he just might be able to do cool solos (in fact there's a solo in Kiss Me which sounds decent) but he just doesn't like to create too loud music.
I just noticed something, many people asking what type looper is he using and multiple answers... So many wrong answers... geez. He is clearly using the Boss RC-20xl. It shows it on the video, so then why all the wrong answers? It is not the RC-30.... It is the RC-20xl
I believe the white pedal is a Boss tuner. The TU-3 is the newest model, I think. You can tune with it and when you turn it on it mutes your guitar as well, so you can change guitars or whatever.

And he used a fucking RC-30😂😂😂 ONLY that makes it insane lol

Getting a good loop first try is no joke. Ed is a VERY specific kind of genius
if you got rhythm, it is pretty easy actually
@@sanderschat I grew up listening to lead belly, sun house and all those Delta boys.

Josh Stevenson it’s the great Ed Sheeran 😂
and a loop pedal ;) hehe
Properly timed??!? What fucking video we’re you watching. For how famous and successful he is, he’s surprisingly sloppy.
@@ColonelPaynus So what is your problem with that lol?
This is 90% just smoke and mirrors. 10% musical skill.
Just got this loop station yesterday for my birthday!
Which brand/model
Looks like a Boss RC-20XL to me
Hanh Bangsia it is an RC-20 but I recommend the RC-30 😉
@@chillingguy9979 Is the rc-30 or Rc-300 better? For singing, guitar and liver performance
Bumi go the rc 300 hundred is better but about twice the price
i don't think I've ever seen anyone else get such clean rhythms with a loop pedal
+timothy james it's more a matter of perfect timing. I don't think his equipment helps him out in that regard
I agree it's timing. I used to play around with the best equipment money could buy when I worked for a Pro Audio company... and this is still mind blowing.
timothy james the Loopings Station he uses, you get for around 200€
Alexander Lee havnt seen david ford then. state of the union for example.
Kevin Young damn I was just about to suggest the fantastic Mr Ford...
there's nothing cooler than seeing someone doing this kind of thing live though.
Very clever, 9 years ago. Today a big star that fills up stadiums. Was at his concert in Vienna yesterday. It was great! Well done, what a talent.
Incredible talent👌 he’s brought looping to the mainstream
I think he needs to do a lesson of this loop I cant stop listening to it its awesome

I really liked this so much it sounded amazing :)
He's so good. Words can't explain his performance.
yes they can.... "he has a lot of money and a lot of free time"
he's brilliant
Damn you Ed Sheeran! You manage to do, what I have wanted to do for years, in a simple, single take! Maybe there's still hope!
wow amazing I just discovered loop pedal and then I see a lotta great stuff and this is the best I've seen yet
Utterly incredible
Amazing looping skills!!! LOVE IT!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Awesome. I have all the basic instruments in my house and can’t even do a good intro.. this guy just got one little guitar & does it all 😆

Superb. Just got the rc 300 cannot wait to jam the shit out of it
He is so talented ! (:
I need to learn how to use one of these things!! I think Ive finally found how Im gonna do songs!
I want a loop pedal so bad! ed sheeran is awsome!
Smooth stuff! I like to do the same thing mixing Spanish guitar and reggae, its in the video responses.
With just an rc 30 and two channels this is awesomely cool
He's not a novice, he's a standard intermediate player, but what makes him different is the smart ways of using the knowledge he has on guitar, and make interesting sound combinations out of it.
“Standard intermediate player”…. He’s a made millions and become as famous as a musician can get. Get back to making my latte barista.
"Standard intermediate" 🤣🤣🤣
HE. IS. AMAZING!
Musical Genius.
Brilliant!
I don't think the final product was that clean but watching this surely is a great experience!
I’m getting one at Christmas !

I wonder how he makes the guitar sound like that. Like the effects and the thumpyness.Wonder what his eq settings are.

any instrument store in your area, if they dont have one they willl most likely ask you if you would like them to order you one. They did that to me.
What size do you think that guitar he is using? It looks smaller than a lot of other classical guitars.
Do they use bass amp, as the base of guitar can be heard clearly
Does this loop pedal let you record voice but then use the voice recoding separate to the guitar
So I can press on the backing (guitar) and then sometimes add harmonies?
Can he delete layers whilst playing?
