Bilkis Bano case
Bilkis Bano was gangraped during Gujarat riots in 2002.
A mob had attacked a truck and killed 14 people in Dahod.
Bombay High Court held all 20 accused guilty.
On March 3 in 2002, 14 people - including four women and four children - were killed while 19-year-old Bilkis Yakub Rasool was gangraped and left to die. But she survived the brutality and fought for justice.
Communal violence spread across Gujarat after the Godhra incident. Thousands of families - of both Muslim and Hindu communities - were moving to safer places. One of those families was of Bilkis Bano.
The family was moving in a truck. There were 17 people in it. They suddenly found themselves under attack from a mob of about 30-35 rioters near Randhikpur village in Dahod district not very far from Ahmedabad.
The attackers descended on the truck and in next one hour or so, 14 people were killed. Among the deceased was the two-year-old Saleha, the daughter of Bilkis. Saleha's head had been smashed.
Bilkis was five months pregnant and signs of pregnancy were visible. She was gangraped and brutalised. Govind Nai, Jaswant Nai and Shailesh Bhatt were named as perpetrators. They left Bilkis Bano for dead.
