Linda. Tiffany. Jennifer. Dorothy. What's in a name? For something you're expected to stick with for your whole life, names seem to come and go as quickly as fashion trends. While some names stick around forever (Elizabeth), others flash into popularity in an instant (Shirley, Brittany). Regardless, these names live on in American history through the people to whom they are given. Why do parents choose the baby names they do? We've been working on this video for a while. Hope you like it!

Strawberry Cheesecake Lover : are you peter parker (spiderman) girlfriend?

This video confirms my suspicions that "Jennifer" and "Jessica" will be old people names in 40 years. The new Edna and Edith
The new Mary, really.

@@Violetdelusions I more meant how they quickly rise in popularity and then fall, like Edna and Edith, Mary remains popular for a very very long time, which Jess and Jen don't. All lovely names though
Jessica in 40 years u wont be luv
Don’t forget Barbara and Margaret my GRANDMA is named Margaret
Now the baby names be Starlight, Southwest, and Frappechino

Yet so true!
My grandmother was born in 1932 and named Betty (the second most popular name of that year!). She’s sick right now and probably will not survive the next week and a half until her 88th birthday. She’s gone through a lot in her lifetime and still has love to give to all of her children and grandchildren. She’s strong and tenacious and has the brightest blue eyes. She’s kind to everyone and has made it through so much more than I can ever hope to. Even though she’s endured congestive heart failure, hip replacements, the deaths of her husband and son, and much, _much_ more, she’s always been there for me. I love you, Nana.
I’ll be praying for her 🙏 hope she gets better
Damn, your grandma's a real fighter. I hope she'll get better soon :)
Lemon Pepper and Lili Grace, thank you very much. She’s made it to 88!
Kit Kat, even if you said she made it to 88, I'll give her another blessing.
María Thank you so much. Every little bit helps tremendously.

Hi I'm emily
Generation Alpha: Sophia
Someday everyone will have a grandma named Emily
Lots of people do now. It's an old-timey time that still sounds good, like Anna or Emma.
mike spence granny Jennifer is all the rage right now.
Or Emma and Grace, which are also "old-timey" sounding names. Many people today have grandmothers with those names, and it appears that in the future many will as well. I'm a Gen Y-er but I know a Gen X woman who named her youngest daughter Emma Grace (Emma as a first name and Grace as a middle name.) And my mother (who is a late-end Baby Boomer) has two middle names, after both her grandmothers (my great grandmothers); one of those middle names is Emily.
I will be one
Luckily for me, my grandchildren will probably misspell my name as my parents decided to give me an uncommon spelling of a name that was fine as it was!
We Elizabeth's always loomed in the background, never rising to high, and never falling too far.
lovecatsanddragons and that’s what makes us superior
Is that why Queen Elizabeth II is immortal? Eh?
One thing that always drove me crazy was how often it's used as a middle name.
Me: Hi, I'm Elizabeth.
Girl: Wow! What a coincidence! That's my middle name!
Me: **through gritted teeth** Is it? Is it really? I never would have guessed.
Also it seems that some variant of Catharine is widely used as a middle name - at least four of my acquaintances are named Ava Kathryn or something similar.
When your name isn’t even on the Evolutionary Girl chart😔
Feels bad I went to school "85 students" 4 of us were named Amber there were 6 other Ambers in the other grades we didn't even get top 10 lol

Its really shows how the names get more 'unusual'(equally distributed)
I believe Mary is affiliated with religion and as religion falls out of fashion so does the name, just like the media stars only media stars fall faster.
But for so long there has always been popular boys names that were religious.
@@thehufflepuffhermione There still are.
One thing I noticed that wasn't pointed out in the facts was the fact that the Wizard of Oz (book) was published in 1900 and the musical came out in 1902 and within 10 years "Dorothy" becomes the #3 name in the country and stays in the top 3 for the next 20 years.
That's a good point. We'll have to include that in the 2014 update version in May! It can replace the fact about the Hershey bars, because who needs chocolate when you can have Dorothies?

One of the most interesting things that I see is the diversification that seems to really kick off in the early 90s. All the bubbles just start shrinking and multiplying. I feel like maybe the internet increased people’s sense of global community. and people want their kids to stand out among the sea of people. People switched from key names and gravitated towards unique ones.

Btw, I was born 2 years after the last year Emily was 1st-

I wonder if the reason there are so many A name bubbles in recent years is because people are lazy and can't be bothered to read through all the names in a baby name book?

It's very interesting how good you can see the individualism kick in at the end where just all bubbles go small cause everyone wants to name their kids in a unique way
Mary: *I used to rule the world*
😔
that satisfaction when mary finally gets overtaken... wait what?
This is interesting... In the beginning the name choices were more close together, the first place was at 5%...
And in 2013 it was only around 1-2%, which means a lot of different names withiut too much of a focus on one specific name.
Probably has something to do with globalisation, more variety due to the huge communication etc...
I love how I just start seeing my teachers names up there lol
Rose was such a nice name. Is it to cheesy nowadays?
not really, i'd bang any rose
Just be careful. She won't share a plank with you when you're in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.
InfectedSoup my mom's name is rose..wtf
No because parents want to name their children dumb names like Squire Sebastian Senator (THAT'S HIS FIRST NAME) and Abcde
my middle name is rose and my grandma's name is rose
I felt myself pulling for certain names to stay in the top ten . . .
