What are the tell tell signs of a system like this being used in the summer months? Would smudge, rust, and deformation of aluminum be some of the tell tell signs that a ice melting system is being misused in the summer months?
Thanks Rob for this video. I am a new home owner and your videos are quite useful, even for beginners like me :) Do you have experience with other de-icing systems ? At my hardware store, they store the EasyHeat system which has clips that just clips on the shingles. There are no screws involved. I wonder if it is any good or if it is better to invest in a system with screwed clips. Also, shouldn't you put some kind of putty between the clip and the roof so that when you screw the clip, the putty acts to prevent water from leaking inside ? Thanks and happy holidays guys ! :)
I advise not to stick anything to your shingles. Shingles are not designed to hold anything but the own weight. About your doubts penetrating the roof. Check a still picture at 4:45. He is penetrating where shingles are meant to be penetrated. Next to the fastener you can see a nail. The spot is protected by the next row of shingles.
You should never put screws through your shingles into your roof decking. Now you have a bunch of little holes all over your roof for water to seep into.

Bryan Smitke we apply small strips of Vycor over the clips, then we silicone the shingle down
You know there’s hundreds or thousands of nails that go through the roof, right? 🤦🏼♂️
Surely this tech has to get better. This really makes the roof and gutter system look like shit.
Is it extremely dangerous to run a system like this in the Summer months.
There’s no need to run it and it’s thermostat and snow sensor controlled
Cheaper to insulate. 30 Amp breaker, watch that electric meter spin
340rps With spray foam yes, but it is not always feasible in the areas and not always accessible
