Im old and i have always farmed or homesteaded because we had to to survive. My journey is because of a prescripton i was given. After taking this prescription for a number of years they took me off and said it causes cancer put me on another one, same thing again causes cancer. Now tFDA had already approved these drugs. Dr. put me on another, . I had terrible side effects put me on 6 more, terrible side effects. So i quit told the doc i was done, obviously FDA not doing their job. Did my research and went in the opposite direction. Much better. Big pharma in business to make money not to heal us. I almost died because of prescription drugs. Sooo im still growing my own and canning there again my relatives over in Europe tell me alot of the foods we buy in the store are not allowed over there because of the ingredients they put the product here

Thank you for being brave enough to speak out about this! In the past 4 years, I’ve watched many of my favorite homesteading channels dive hard core into the incessant conspiracy banter. Sadly, I had to unsubscribe from most of them because I found myself in a state of constant fight-or-flight. It took the joy out of the lifestyle me and my husband were trying to build. I think about the verses in Matthew 6:26-34, knowing that our Creator does not want us to live in a state of constant worry about tomorrow. What use are we to the kingdom if we live in constant fear?

I was finding the same thing, and have been removing my subscription from several channels over the past few months, and I'm not done. It's exhausting to listen to all that stuff! I moved to the country to have a quieter, more relaxing life 😊. I can't control what craziness is going on in the world, but I can control what I allow myself to see and hear!

Bravo Jill!! I was raised much like you in the 1960s and early 70s. It’s very difficult to find a different path…to speak about recent events, I systematically went through my CZcams follower list and deleted everybody who had negative outlooks and rants. I am a stroke survivor and I need all the positivity I can find, no more doom and gloom ❤️ Keep up the good work, we need you!!!

Lots of good information and sound advice. None of us know what the future holds and living in a state of fear is not healthy for the mind or spirit. However, I'm finding so many people are quick to judge and label anyone who questions anything as a conspiracy theorist. That is just as unhealthy and can be just as dangerous and is used to suppress open thought and critical thinking.

Hi Jill, I was married in 1981. We couldn't afford to purchase a home. Mortgage rates then were 18%. I also worked in the banking industry. We lived in very much farm country, in a small community, in middle Tennessee. It was heartbreaking to see farmers losing everything due to not being able to pay when interest rates on these types of loans went to 21%...YES 21%! I see everyone freaking out over the rates these days, and I remember in the late 80's when we were so thrilled to see them go out of the double digits! I was a mortgage loan officer from 1998-2015. I saw rates when I first started in the 8's and 9's...praying they would go down, since I was commissioned based. They did. And you are exactly correct. Rates do fluctuate. After all, the most wise Solomon did say in Ecclesiastes 1:9 What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Your same point exactly!

There are a number of homesteader groups that I have left because, honestly, it's exhausting dealing with those that are constantly going on about this or that conspiracy. I wasn't raised as you were, but I've met a number of people as an adult that were and, wow...the extents to which they would go to prove that they were right even when proven wrong was mind boggling. They cyclical nature of illnesses in humans civilizations and the reactions to those illnesses is well documented. Reading about the Justinian Plague and what it caused was really surprising. We just had a couple of life times where there wasn't as much of it as before and didn't think it could happen to us. Hubris got us. Great video/podcast. Thank you for sharing it.

  • @narrowpathfarm
    @narrowpathfarm Před 2 měsíci +61

I would say most Conspiracy theories are real, BUT, God made us to be in the garden to grow our own food and tend to it. It’s not bad to believe the theories and to be prepared for the future, but if your whole reason to homestead is because of the theories, you will be in a state of flight or fight and you will be burnt out so fast. Homestead because that is how God made us originally, enjoy the slow life and appreciate all the highs and lows this life brings, and when these theories come to pass, we won’t have to be doing this out of survival, but that we are doing this to thrive.
I will add that biblically there are signs that are fast approaching, but again, we can’t live with our sympathetic nervous system in over drive.
    Enjoy this life!

I agree 100%. I've stopped watching most homestead channels because I don't want to fill my 24/7 waking hours with these thoughts, although I agree with most of the minsets. I think we need to keep our thoughts uplifted and focus on the good in life. I live in the city, but my backyard is a huge home garden, and I love gardening and preserving food. Thanks for speaking up. I think we CAN change the bad things many are afraid of by making positive changes in our own lives. It's amazing how our positive energy influences those around us. ❤

You are so right about not looking up and waiting for it all to fall down. If anything, when we look up from homestead chores into the beautiful sky, we are looking for our day HE calls us home! Thank you for this. I even had to leave social media last September. It was just too much anxiety. I’ve been homesteading for almost 8 years now. This lifestyle naturally gives you a cushion when life gets tough. I am so thankful we were already living this way when COVID hit. Even with homeschooling, I never had to worry about the children and all the stuff that went down in schools. I was born in Cuba and lived there the first half of my life. My family went through a lot there. We also went without a lot of basic things. It was very hard. Because of that experience I have a very high level of distrust of any government. Just don’t trust them and I know we are our first line of defense for everything. Having said that I refuse to live in fear. My focus is to learn these skills that makes us more self reliant in any emergency and have fun doing it as well as teaching my children. I love when they tell me they love to be farmers. Distrust for the government keeps me focused because I know exactly what they are capable of but homesteading keeps me happy 😂 But I refuse to listen to every single theory out there. That’s not way to live.

Jill, you are such a breath of fresh air!! I just recently started watching your videos and vlogs, and am really enjoying them. I moved to the country from the suburbs 6 years ago because it was something I had wanted to do for years. I had started watching homesteading/prepping/gardening videos to learn how to do things, but with covid, elections, and other stuff, I've stopped watching several channels. Many i used to watch have become too political, too forceful about religion, and downright ugly if you don't agree with what they say. I have found your channel right on time! Thank you for being a voice of reason and logic.

I used to live in the fear. Then I realized that I was making very unwise decisions based on that fear. I had to do something about that.

Y2K. lol. I was working in the Tech industry at the time. Yep, I was a geek even though I was home farming. There was way too much misinformation that was pushed out all to make a buck. We bought this homestead in the early 80s. Interest rates today are decent compared to back then. We got spoiled with really low rates prior to the latest rate hikes. They will go down. You are correct about our current problem with food prices being corporate greed. Corporations want to make more profits. Corporations don’t care about quality of what they are producing. My garden is ready to plant as soon as the weather allows. Even at my age, I want to expand my garden and orchard so I can produce nearly all of our produce.

Good podcast. I can definitely agree with some of your points. I have come to realize that so much of what a person worries about never comes to fruition - so why worry about it and make oneself sick, i figure. If you start with this thinking, it sets your brain in a different place and makes everything one does as a response to just being prepared rather than fear. So many are talking about the end of the world, wars and such and although it may happen, living this lifestyle and putting up for a "rainy day" (bad crop year, all your chickens get eaten by coyotes, beef cow dies, etc) is a more rational reason for doing what we do.

  • @rachelreinbold2685

Wow, I needed to hear this so badly! I grew up in a Christain fundamentalist cult that was very conspiratorial and watched a lot of those horrifying end-times videos you were taking about. This primed me to feel fear over everything as an adult and have spent some really hard times being completely burned out but feeling like I had to keep pushing to keep packing away food and supplies. I put my physical and mental health at risk and honestly gave myself a lot of trauma. I started dreaded gardening season because I went back to the panic and pressure I felt to produce as much as possible which is the opposite of what gardening should be! It's so hard to break out of this fear based way of being though especially when it feels like no one around us has any positive outlooks on the world. So thank you for being that hard-to-find person!

    Hey Jill!!
I am so grateful to you for this episode!!! It takes a lot of guts to do what you do in a world where misunderstanding will happen. I am SO encouraged and validated ( lol )😂😉. I have felt this contrast in motivation within the homestead movement, as well as in permaculture and foraging circles. I have also vacillated between feeling motivated by love, joy, and passion and the extreme forces of fear. This idea of recognition of uncertainty and cycles while living a life motivated by love, joy and passion leading to a more balanced and prepared situation as a result feels so much better to me. I too, lived through similar fearful times where the end of the world seemed imminent and terrifying only to realize how much time was wasted in fear when joy, love and passion could have been our reality. You said it so beautifully, and I am reading through your book now for the second time. It brings tears to my eyes in parts each time I read it because you put into words what I have felt and experienced, but struggled to express. Thank you so much!💕

thank you. I am also interesting in homesteading, but was sometimes getting scared about how many people who are driven to it present a conspiracy vein. I feared I wouldn't be able to find friends. I am a rational, science-oriented person and I often converge with you on many issues. I believe that to some extent, the tendency to believe in the theories in question correlates with a paranoid personality. but I love how you included everyone and spoke to everyone. I often lack patience to do that. it really is a great thing to do. this might be the unexpected 'gift' of being raised in an environment that was otherwise so challenging, and made you believe the sky was falling as a child. a testimony that our past doesn't always have to define who we will grow up to be.

Thank you so much for this! I've been getting the most negative video recommendations in my CZcams feed lately, and I think it's because I watched ONE video of a divorce lawyer talking about his profession (I have friends who divorced a year ago, and I wanted to try and make sense of it). Now all I see is "women who hit the wall" and "men are toxic" and "dating is ruined". It's super demoralizing, even though I'm in a happy marriage for 20 years. Hi Jill. I want to share this with a lot of people who need to hear what you’re said. I’m trying to do a little “reset” myself, by not getting very involved in the news. I don’t watch television much, and choose to read about what’s happening in the world, and not even much of that. I’ve been called a prepper by my friends, but as you pointed out, having a full pantry and a love to learn new hands-on skills keeps me involved and interested in my world. If it turns out I’m more prepared than some when the power is out or that my food is more healthy than most, then I’m just happy about that and I will keep spreading the word. Many years ago you were my “sponsor” with DoTerra. And I lived in WY for many years. Keep up the great work!

thx 4 sharing, just because we want to have reliable good food does not mean we are prepping for the end, it's a lifestyle not a 'game' of who can hoard the most. Just because I want to live free doesn't mean I want my neighbor to suffer, it's a community of where you live not a 'group' scattered far apart. After having my daughter back in the early 1990's, I decided to go organic, which was not a trendy term back then. My husband was a herdsman, so the dairy dept was our first goal along with our own veggies & beef. Thankful we can live this lifestyle and glad to see so many more joining the movement of going back to the old ways! blessings n wishing everyone a happy planting spring!

I purposely redirected that anxiety and fear into positive action to be more prepared for what might or might not come to be. My husband and I are in our 60s so some of the physical things younger people can do, we can't anymore. This has not stopped us from growing as many veggies as possible and this year bringing in some chickens to cut down on buying eggs from the store. I just ran across your videos for the first time this weekend and I have to say this video as well as the one where you talk about your religion are top-notch.
As somebody a bit older than you who was addicted to the conspiracy theories over the years and member of survivalist forums, gun forums, etc, I went through a lot of the same experiences as you .
I'm not religious and I had a hard time fitting in with groups who seem to be religious, but yet also couldn't seem to get the glee out of their conversations about shooting up the rest of the world when the time finally comes .
I ended up moving away from those kinds of forums and groups and I'm happy to have ran across your videos.
We are hoping to get a couple of acres just to kind of putter around with and maybe do some providing for ourselves here in the near future but it's not necessarily going to be a homestead or a survivalist type situation. It's just going to be something that we want to do for ourselves so that we can do it.
Anyway, I'm glad to have run across your videos because I'm going to be hopefully using them here in the near future.

Another great point about being prepared and this lifestyle creating that cushion against the ebb and flows of every day life, that we all deal with!
2009 example, I just bought my house. I was a single mom and the crash came and I was laid off from my job. The job I was doing was apparently something I no longer qualified for because there were so many people needing jobs that the job I was doing required a bachelors degree and I am a high school dropout.
However, my upbringing allowed me and my children as a single parent, with no help, ride out a few months with enough food and money to pay the bills… no way was it easy nor was it anything equivalent to our life while I was working it was still comforting to know that the basics of life were going to be taken care of until I could figure out another way to survive.
In addition, continuing my upbringing practices of gardening, and putting up food and living a simple life; when Covid hit, and our local tiny little grocery store was being “raided’ by surrounding larger towns and the shelves were empty, we were able to ride that out… we have to get creative sometimes, yes!
I am so grateful for this being the way I was raised!!
finding joy with seed saving and gardening and preserving food and hunting and foraging

  • @mykindpharm

Totally agree- There is nothing to be gained perpetuating fear and responding in fear for sure…
But there is a place for it… and finding the balance
And making the constant choice to live in faith no matter what!
Your comment about government reminded me of this quote:
    Abraham Lincoln:
'Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.'
Seems some government entities could use some schooling around their character ❤
Social moral desensitizing adds to the growing concern of my well being and the wellbeing of my family and other loved ones…
As much as I feel government has over extended powers, sure would be nice to have the older ‘old-fashioned’ guidelines for media produced and allowed in place 🙏
Live your content and greatly appreciate the opportunity to hear opposing views that are tactful and neutral… not adding to inflammatory rhetoric
    Thank you 😊

Slowing down to see all that is good in what God has already provided for use has been good for us. We’ve always gardened. It gives me such a peace being able to feed my family healthy foods. Yes, what has happened will happen again. Nothing new under the sun.

Wow your story sounds a little similar to mine. I was born into Jehovah’s Witness family and was exposed to violent images as a young child. The end of the world was always happening. Concentration camps were to be expected for my future. I remember this as far back as age 3-4. So that made me ber fearful and never felt safe. My dad was disfellowshipped and as a teen I was so happy about that. But when January 2020 came around I had those old fears pop in my head and many things I was taught as a kid started flooding my brain. Lately I’ve been trying to not live in fear and get caught up in theories. It’s a lot of work to not get sucked in. I feel like it’s a distraction from our real purpose and that’s to worship God. ❤

That's the right reason to homestead!! Because we love it and draw such joy from it. I'm concerned about the many folks who are running in fear to homestead who have no interest or satisfaction in it and will soon bail out and head back to town and the easier life. We have to love this life and work and not be doing it out of fear.

Hi Jill, what a great video, I couldn't agree with you more and it's a sad situation, but it appears to be rooted in your history. Coming from across the Pond that mindset had been a fringe until Cov where everything anti-establishment now has a back-to-the-land theme (UK: smallholding) that has become a thing, mostly thanks to repeating US channel content. We even have British channels talk about the Great Depression like it actually affected the UK as much as it did the US, it didn't as we were already broke due to WWI. If you just look at history, nothing happening is new and I've seen so much rubbish in 53 years that I unsubbed all those sorts of channels as it's just a constant stream of negative energy...no wonder mental health problems are increasing and I'm having to watch that happen in realtime. At least we don't have a 2A! Yes, one thing that is worrying is the flawed logic that when one or more things are proven not to be a conspiracy that it then it validates all the other conspiracies to sooner or later be true. One thing I do, is if anything is outside my circle of influence, I don't worry about it. Thanks again for the levelheaded, rational post.
