1. To protect themselves from creeps when being outside to drink.
2. To protect the gay guys from abusive fathers. (Happened at my old school) a straight girl and a gay guy pretended to be together just so that his father would stop being an asshole)
3. They just need something platonic and fun not a relationship but still some of the caring for eachother
4. Both parts know they can increase their own status by dating. Also happened at a school i worked at later in ny life.

I’m thinking of one person in particular and she stayed with a guy who would constantly cheat on her. I had to ask around what she was thinking and most people said it was because I didn’t want a girlfriend, but was open to an actual relationship. This guys friends would constantly tell me to move on and I already started to when she said that he was her “boyfriend.”
She told me day one what the deal was, and I immediately started gaming both sides and her sham is now on Facebook because of how many times his friends told me he won. He never did understand who actually called that school, “Just some school by the Air Force Academy.” Until I called her “real” boyfriend a thing.
Her “real” boyfriend was a vet that kept treating her like a pet despite me constantly saying he needed a dog like hers.
A few years later, I found myself at a different school, and meet someone who looks very similar to her. Turns out it was her and my professor kicked her out of the class for lying, then said that her fuck buddy called it a game.
During COVID I finished writing a story, and sent her it on Twitter. She’s blocked me on every social media and contacted my cousins. One of my cousins now has her dog and told me that she never got over it.
