- How often do you get to see this? !
Two Orenda engines side-by side: one from a Canadair Sabre 6 (F86), and one from the Avro Arrow.
Yes, the Iroquois is real, so real that it's actually the only Iroquois ever to be installed into a real Avro Arrow, but it unfortunately never got to fly before the project was cancelled.
Both of these powerplants were designed and built in Canada by Orenda Engines Ltd. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Seriously man!!! What up with the Iroquois updates??? Nothing in 4 years?
There are a load of anxious Canadian people interested in this and would at least like to know what issues you're facing with the rebuild and if there is Anything Canadians can do to help? Missing documents? Missing parts? or Money to finance?
I do believe that the majority of Canadians have a serious desire to reconstruct at least one working model of the Avro Arrow complete with Iroquois engines to see her fly again at National Air Shows as a point of pride and love of our nation.
Please do your best to communicate to Canadians with updates and status of this project so that we as a grassroots community can seek out and promote the idea of starting a promotion and financial backing via fund raising and kickstarter programs across Canada. Cheers and hope to hear from you soon!
he did say years ... dont feel bad Im rewatching this in 2021 during a covid lockdown ... ok so the sens are out playing golf today while the leafs are off to beat some other team ... and May 24 weekend gets going
imagine if they had put Avro iroquois in the V bombers, imagine 4 in a Vulcan.
We are going to run it to full power, with afterburner, AND it is for demostration purposes. It will eventually be the centerpiece in the Western Canadian Aerospace Engine Museum...
I will be there.
It must be humbling to work on such a priceless historical artifact, and just a little heartbreaking.
I hope things are going well; very much looking forward to seeing more of this beautiful Canadian beast.
The plan is to run it up to full power and afterburner... because we can, and because we have confidence in the engine.
I would think many Canadians would happily donate to a fundraiser to help out (myself included) if money is what is required. This feels like a piece of heart that was ripped from our country's chest. We could use a piece of history to rally behind now more than ever...
Yes, everybody says that. But here in the real world, the balance is zero.
Continue your great job guys! What you are doing is amazing. Hope you'll find everything you're missing! Didn't know an overhaul was going on, keep us posted!
get that thing rattling!!!!!!!!!!! What a powerful looking machine!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow! I'm an auto. technician with BMW here in Victoria, BC. You have some absolutely fascinating videos. TERRIBLY excited for the Iroquois engine... Staying tuned, and learning a LOT
Love, just saw the video, Covid sure screwed things up. Than k you for your work promoting Canadain. Love it.
Great video of the Iroquois, keep em coming!
At work there was a cut away of an Orenda. I spent many hours staring, trying to figure out the why's and the how's of the design. I learned a lot. Then the engine went to Ottawa, the place that cancelled Avro Canada.
Hey Jay, any update on X-116? Hope to see some new videos in the near future of her.
THANKS AGAIN JAY.
Beautiful!
Thanks for answering my question. I recently had a chance to watch a few of your videos on a large screen and it is like I'm right there in the shop. Keep up the good work! It really seems like the camera is so good it lets you just focus on the task at hand, but maybe you are just making it look easy ;-)
I've made a couple vids about fuel nozzles, and one called "controlling fuel flow..."
The actual fuel controls are extremely complicated, and they are one of several components of the fuel system, all of which are completely dedicated to their particular engine.
This video was shot exclusively on a Canon power shot Elph 500hs.
I use three different little Canon point and shoot cameras. They are great as video cameras, really don't cost much, and are super easy to use.
I recommend these little cams to everyone!!
I can not wait to see that Iroquois run. Oh Canada!
It's the camera (s). I'm sure there are many good ones out there, but I'm sold on the Canon Elph series.
Wow ,its massive !
Holyyyy, you have part of the Avro Arrow in your shop???? That's insane, just wished it would have taken off.
Hi AgentJayz - hoping you see this comment on this old Orenda video - I spent the day at the Canadian Aviation Museum in Ottawa yesterday! They've got a *stunning* Orenda 14 done up black paint and CHROME. Actually *stunning* isn't a good enough word with all that chrome - combustor casings, pipes, everything. And one side is beautifully cutaway showing all the inner workings (which thanks to you I'm actually familiar with). They also have an Iroquois - what a monster - has got to be 16-20 feet long. Didn't look prettied-up at all to my untrained eye - maybe you can fix it for them. All in all, well worth the visit.
Yes, I've been to that museum, and I actually used that Orenda cutaway for a "course" that I taught to the crew of a Canadian Sabre 6. We have offered many times to run that Iroquois, and have been politely turned down.
Yup the 14 sure is beautiful. And the Iroquois, being politely turned down, well, I suppose it didn't hurt to ask. Let's face it, what could they do other than sell tickets to jet nerds to watch it fly on a test stand. Anyways, Happy Thanksgiving!
Any updates on this beauty of Canadian technology? Came across a static display model of a Orenda piston engine for sale on Facebook Marketplace. It reminded me of this project
It's been in covered storage for years. Updates will be made whenever anything happens.
Checked in two years ago.....This is the last update on the Iroquois rebuild project. Looks like it was shelved and forgotten.... :(
You are basically right there. I have no control over it.
I just put a comment on another video wondering what happened guess I found my answer still to this day they don’t want it known what I can do
I don't know anything about jets or jet engines... but these videos are cool.
Would sooo love to hear that Iroquois. Please please please
It belongs right here.
Any chance you could do an Iroquois walk through so we can see how different it was. bleed, dual shafts, all the good stuff
Of course, I would certainly like to see the compressor blades remade before running after hearing about how the test models had teething issues
c,mon J give us n update on the big boy..
Sad that the cancellation of the arrow ultimately led to Avro's demise, wonder what would have come next?
Hello,
Has there been anything that has surprised you about the Iroquois engine?
Also, what made it better than its contemporaries? How did it create more thrust?
i also liked the way you tackled the engine lubrication system...is that the same with the jet engine's cooling system?
i thought there where 2 of these engines that servived. 1 was in ottawa the other in hamilton. is there no way to get parts from the other engine? then after possible create a couple replica working units?
Hey Jay
Have you guys found the parts that were missing or are you having them made? What exactly is missing for this tower of awesomeness to run?
Cool seeing the motorcycle vid btw. Looks like you guys have a lot of fun.
Thought the original Orenda Iroquois production rights were sold to France years ago.
+Jean Labrek there was a contract to produce the engine for a French fighter jet, but when the Arrow was cancelled everything related to the Arrow, including the Iroquois was classified and destroyed
Hi Agent nice to see work being done to the Iroquios. Any idea as to how long it will take till it can be test run?
What's the latest on the Iroquois rebuild?
How many engine rebuilds do you typically turn over in a year's time? Where are some of them going? Is it mostly commission work? And or, do you buy, rebuild, and sell them to collectors and museums?
Hydden N. Plainsyght A couple dozen. They are all going back where they came from. No. No.
... Uh... Museums don't buy things.
I'm really impressed by how perfect your camera is for doing these hand held shots. It seems to have really nice image stabilization. Could you tell me what kind of camera you are using?
Very excited to see the Iroquois eventually fired up! Is this the unit B.I. makes reference to ?
Hi Jay, I have a passionate interest in anything related to the Arrow. My question is: I understand the Iroquois was quite an advanced engine in the 1950's. Could you explain what made it so advanced and compare it to the modern version of any comparable engine type. Hope this isn't too much to ask.
Thanks, Stew Craig
The Iroquois is nothing special compared to any modern fighter engine, but it its day, it was by far the most powerful turbojet in the world.
For a while, it's most powerful competitor was the American J-57, which made exactly half the thrust.
It was a huge engine, made with lightweight components, which gave incredible performance - again for the time. The engine is larger and less fuel efficient than comparable power units for modern fighters.
The only aircraft ever designed for this engine was the CF105 Arrow, and there are none of those left in existence.
Very nice. Did you manage to source a new blade? I think it was missing one iirc.
FrontSideBus I remember seeing what they claimed to be an Iroquois turbine blade on a little wooden plaque in a glass case at the Sydney Aviation museum south of Victoria BC. Maybe it's the one?
combuster there it is!
was the annular combustion chamber a new idea for the Iroquois engine? I know there were some innovative design improvements on this engine.
Is the restoration of the Orenda Iroquois completed?
It's been on hold for a while.
Jay what's the update on the Iroquois?
Gathering of parts and assembly
Oh! Canada!
Hey Jay - since it doesn`t seem like you guys have any deadline for this nice turbine is the Orenda Iroquois property of your shop?
hello Jay!
what happened with the Iriquois?,when Will we see it Run??
It's a hobby project that will likely require a large amount of money to get running. It remains in a secure storage facility. As promised, I will give updates on the status of this engine whenever anything happens.
So pumped to see the iroquois run... I'm not even remotely canadian, my strongest ties to the great white north are with molsen.
There are various possible sources of original parts; we are investigating. We are not sure which parts we won't find, and then will need to make. Of the few blueprints that survive, hopefully they will match up with the parts we don't have, otherwise we'll have to build our own design .
couple tons, give or take
Being that the Iroquois is a rarity and and obviously rather large, I am wondering, when it is completed, are you guys going to run it....looks like there may be a bit of a problem fitting it into the test cell...I hope it is not going to be a non-running engine, but understandable if it is.
So, what is happening to the Iroquois now?
hello sir...these vids are amazing...i do like the engines up close even though im just a kid...by the way do you have a video about jet engine fuel system and how do they work?
thanks you sir JayZ...
=^_^=
its the arrow engine :0)
what arrow did that engine go into, my arrow book says no iroquois ever made it into an arrow because it was still being tested on the b-47 test bed when the project was cancelled ?
It was installed, but never flew. I am not sure the air frame #.
@@AgentJayZ was it the taxi test engine? think it was 206 maybe. x-115&116. 117 and 118 were the flight test engines i believe if facts are true 🤷♂️
They won't fall over unless the ground moves.
um that is NOT the only engine to be fitted to an arrow ... the one at the Ottawa air museum at the old rockliffe air base has one that was used for taxi trials in an arrow no one is certain but the only arrow to need taxi trials and have an iriquois in it was 206 ... the engine in Ottawa ended up at NRC for experimentation and as a back up generator .. until it was returned to the air base and stored in packing grease in the back of the old hangar of the museum ... where it was noticed by a pair of kids who asked what it was and no one knew ... they found out ...
Good news, then. No need to yell.
@@AgentJayZ excitement ... happens ... as for the manuals for it ... did you HAPPEN to make digital copies of them at all ... and if so how may one go about getting a copy of those manuals ?
.
btw I was one of those two kids who refound that engine .. i was 5 at the time ... asked a staffer what plane the jet under the tarp was from ... this of course was back when the museum was still actual base hangars ... took them a bit but they found out and well the rest is history as they say ;)
and I worked on both of them.
What is the current status of the Iroquois Engine?
Sorry found it way down in the comments. $$ Thanks
Any Update on X-116.
It's in storage, Pierre. It's a long term non-profit project. And these days, profits are harder to come by.
@@AgentJayZ, thank you Just intrigued by X-116 story and how you managed to get it from the UK. The how it got to the UK is a bit of a mystery and being one to not want to judge any accounts without proper investigation. Official accounts are very plausible though as you are well aware with the Arrow program nothing is ever what it seems from those accounts. The two ejection seats are what lead me to your channel and the account posted by the gent that has one of them for sale in the UK. I am only starting my Arrow investigation and what I am finding the more I learn the more questions are being created. I can answer 1 question and that answer will only ask many more questions!
Hey Agent J,,
What happened to the Iroquois Turbojet project??? . Thought Mr Sipe was going to obtain the rest of the parts from overseas and bring this Awesome Power plant back to life for the Pride of the Canadian People. This is the Last update after all the procuring, after all the obtaining, after all the debut with welcoming back , Daena doing all that hard work to clean and polish....was it all for nothing???, or did the Brit's decide after the trade they needed that they didn't want the Canadians afterall, to have a complete Orenda Iroquois engine after all....Really confused after watching the Movie, Keeping up on video with the procurement of the unit with Sn#116 from the Brit's , all that hard elbow grease to bring it back to it's original awesome pristine, to have it end like this?.......What a Wasteful dissapointment.
Well, it's not quite that bad. The Iroquois exist as a set of cases, assembled for static display at our airshow, and at this time is in covered storage next to our Canadair Sabre 6. To restore either to running condition will be an enormously costly project, and progress is slow.
@@AgentJayZ,
I understand, did not mean to get short. Mr. Sipe's team there at S&S is "10's", love all your Vid's !, from the basic's of component cleaning all the way to start up and testing some of those awesome fire breathing monsters ( LM1500 to say). It was not a Wasteful disappointment as I overreacted...I just would've just hoped that the Brit's would've stood behind their word and delivered , it seems though that after the Brit's got the parts for the Hampton aircraft , it's as if they just basically just shut the door on the complete trade and I know that there is a substantial investment of sn#116 that has already been paid to the Brit's in mention for this masterpiece of aerodynamic engineering . It is owed to the Canadian People that what Former Minister douchenberg did to the greatest Aircraft ever built , and program ever conceived by the Canadian engineers to stop the red menace from destroying our way of life was brought to abrupt end for no reason, as the financial benefits would have out weighed the costs long term. Countries ( like the US ) , would've been lining up to have this type of interceptor in that time ( the late 50's) for years to come. I do believe however that had the Iroquois power plant been installed and tested in RL202 and forward, The future would have had a very different outcome for AVRO Corpporation and put Canada on the map in Air superiority!. if you would , please request that Mr. Sipe keep pressing the Brit's to keep they're end of the( Gentlemen's) bargain as they agreed to....and keep the Vid's coming!
Chris
Agent Jay Z what do you think that happend to the missing Avro Arrow?
Many people have speculated over the years that a sixth arrow was built; RL206.
All I know is, I hope they are right, because if there was a 206, it wasn't destroyed.
AgentJayZ
At least the nose and cockpit weren't.
Sadly the program was scrapped by a SINGLE day.
Is that 10 kt
What's up with the big boy I wonder if there is a plane that would fit into 🤔🤔🤔
There was... It was called the Avro Arrow.
...bit of a sensitive subject here in Canada...
AgentJayZ I know 😊😊 did you find all the rest of the parts to finish the restoration of the IROQUOIS. Just thought if there was something that it would fit in when it's completed just to see what it could do in flight. But I suppose the test bed would confirm what the engineers say it would do. .
There is no aircraft that could handle an Iroquois. It's very large in diameter.
Ours remains incomplete, but we dream.
AgentJayZ so they haven't located those missing parts where you found it that sucks . Well time will tell I guess we continue with anticipation. Awesome videos by the way
