I originally wanted to dislike Chris, but then I realized 1. He shares my namesake, and 2. it was only envy. The Klon mythos was definitively put to rest for me when I watched a Shnoble video comparing a ProCo Rat to a Klon KTR. Between 8 o'clock and noon on the Rat, it was indistinguishable from the Klon. The Centaur going for the prices it does is sheer derangement. I'm one of those like Bill, who was fed up with the bass and treble shelving of typical TS style drives, but I easily achieved the goal of a transparent overdrive that just sounds like my amp driving a bit, with a Way Huge Green Rhino MkII which has extra controls that allows me to match the EQ to my amp's tone.

I never understood how overdriving a signal to the point of clipping and beyond could be transparent. For the price of a Klon, you could buy an amp that doesn’t need a Klon to sound good.

      Some gear is meant for for money no object situations, budget considerations just don't come into consideration. If a klon gets the job done it will be used. For hobbyists, a modeler covers a ton of ground and renders boutique stuff pointless.

    I had an original Centaur that I purchased fom Bill in '06 I think. It was on my board from then until maybe about 2012. I sold when the price reached what I thought was an astronomical $1200. I figured I could put that money to good use and surely the KTR or one of the other Klones that were about would be indiscernable from the real thing. Well. To cut a long story short I think I've owned all the best known Klon substitutes and none of them are exactly the same as the silver Klon I had. The RYRA that's on my board now is more compact, sounds really close (although maybe the larger Centura was a smidge closer to my ear) and performs the same function more than well enough. I do still miss that original though.

    My first time using a K style pedal I definitely LOVED it as a clean boost. I used over pedals for the drive. I've never stacked to klon into a klon though 🤔 hmm. Might need to get two tumnus's, tumni if you will.

    I have to say I struggle to hear much difference between any OD pedals through YT. I have got pretty high end headphones but I guess you have to be in the room to get any real effect. I really can’t hear anything (through the video anyway) that makes this stand out at all.....except Chris’s usual phenomenal playing.

    I used to own an original klon. Serial number 300 and it was a silver horse box. Very early and very desirable. The truth is they sound good yes, but we hear with our eyes too often and convince ourselves they sound different to the several modern version available. They're a lot of fun to own and it's great to look down at your board and see a real klon but there's no magic in there, nothing you can't get from any decent brand these days. I sold mine for £1750 about 2 years ago which seems crazy cheap now for a first year of production model but I don't miss it...... Much. 🙂. A solid investment and a lovely thing to have for however long you keep it

    It's a good investment as long as you keep following the market, which of course you will. Brilliant playing as always. The Klon clone in the HX Stomp is my favorite pedal in their sizeable collection.

    In my humble opinion, the problem, actually, with many overdrive and dist pedals is that they often have a specific sound. I use an ordinary boss OD3 and it has nothing special, but gives just some boost and sustain, and let the sound of the guitar comes through. That’s enough for me.

  • @Bjornandhisguitar
    @Bjornandhisguitar Před 3 lety

    I love my klon, for recording it’s all I need for session work. When playing live on top of the right overdrive which for me is a protein pedal at the mo! Killer. Bit of a shame they have become so expensive. Everyone should have the pleasure 🙏🙏🙏
