"THE SONGS OF BACHARACH AND COSTELLO"-A TRACKINGANGLE.COM VIDEO REVIEW

  • Rather than writing the usual written review of this extensive, well-produced and curated set, Michael Fremer chose a video review to better show the box and associated records.
The set includes a double LP containing the ""Painted From Memory" collaboration spread to 3 sides. Side 4 contains selected songs from the never fully realized Bacharach/Costello musical "Taken From Life" performed by various artists including Cassandra wilson and Bill Frisell, Audra Mae and of course Bacharach and Costello.
There are also 4 CDs, one each for "Painted..." and "Taken From Life". A 3rd CD titled "Because It's a Lonely World-Live" contains live collaborations between Costello and Steve Niece recorded around the world. CD 4 features Bacharach songs Costello recorded throughout his career beginning with "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" from the 1977 release "Live Stiff" that signaled to fans of "My Aim is True" that this guy was not beholden to the "new wave/punk" image conjured up by his record company.
Brilliantly produced by Costello and Steve Berkowitz. Expect the usual M.F. side stories and asides.

Painted from Memory is a really superb album. I have the cd and have been enjoying it since it was released way back. Really shows Costello's range as an artist. Always been a fan of Bacharach too. Great video and very informative. Thank you.

Thank you Michael, hearing you sing (in tune) was worth the price of admission!
“Make way for Dionne Warwick” was released in 1964, her 3rd album but 1st US charting album. It wasn’t recorded by Phil Ramone but someone else at Bell Sound Studios. Phil says in an interview he started working with Burt and Hal in 1967 which agrees with Casino Royale.

Hi dear Sir. A fan of your channel, reviews, unboxing. What a talent that Burt and Elvis are. May need to get this. You are a great singer as well. Immensely enjoyed this excursion. Not crazy at all. God bless.

Delightful. Could listen to these reminiscences all day, and the free association may be the best part. And appreciate the upgraded video quality. Don’t forget that Bacharach gem 24 Hours from Tulsa, a tribute to not returning to my hometown.

Painted from Memory is a brutal amazing album. It is beautiful and painful to listen to if you ever lost the love of your life. Really about dealing with and overcoming loss. Heavy, heavy, but the sound and the music are incredible. I have the hdcd that I enjoy on my hdcd player. The thing about Burt for me was that he could do great stuff, but also kind of schlocky goofy stuff for the money, but even then you could tell there was a deep musical knowledge underlying it. He and Costello brought out the best in each other on that album. Nice review and remembrance.

Chiming in to say your voice was lovely. I’ve always loved the version of “Baby It’s You” by Smith, which was used so well (and introduced to me) in Tarantino’s “Death Proof.”

I received my copy today here in Australia, $300- imported, ouch! However I have found that side 3 or (C?) Is pressed off-centre which is infuriating, especially when 'strings' are involved. VERY disappointed - asking if anyone else has noticed or has this issue ?

The Qobuz and Tidal High-res. streams of the box set sound great but avoid the Tidal stream of the 1998 original as it is plagued by the old record company copy-protection system that added unspeakably bad flutter to the sound. To my amazement I’ve never read a peep from any audiophiles complaining about this.

@@trackingangle929 I had a extra copy of Abbey Road 50th lp. I was singing each song to my daughter over the phone to see if she wanted the record. My daughter went to AMDA in NYC on scholarship. As a classically trained vocalist. As I was singing the songs to her she stopped me and said, “damn that sounds so good “. And I’m a total music lover and , gag, audiophile. I do play guitar. ☮️
