Tips for the Alcatraz Tour

- This video gives a short introduction into a visit of Alcatraz Island, San Francisco, California.
The tour starts with a ferry ride, starting from Pier 33. Make sure to be at the Pier in time, not to miss the ride to the island.
The boat first goes once around the entire island (clockwise). So the best view is from the front or the right side.
A tour guide welcomes the guests once they step onto the island. He takes everybody to cell block C, which is on the top of the hill. From there a self guided audio tour takes the visitors through the cell block.
After the audio tour, it is still possible to roam the island and see a lot more.
Also make sure to visit the gift shop.

UPDATE: The boat trip he describes only applies to the “night trip. We just went to Alcatraz and there was no circling the island or narration by the captain.

Do you have a suggested best time of day to go? How long is the tour?
For less crowds I’d go early mornings. Downside is that it will be cooler than the rest of the day.
Don’t go it’s lame and a waste of time and money

I just looked up the website. It looks like it's about $41 for adults. Is that what you paid? There's a $2 discount for seniors
It was $56 for the night tour (seniors $53).
The price was worth it to me. But I definitely want to come back again during the day time. There simply was not enough time to see everything there is.
