I’m a bit in love with it
@@GeoffBuysCars
Get it close to mint as possible and keep adding the miles 👍
Analog turbo gauges are still one of the coolest things
I was the General Manager of a Volvo dealership when these came out back in the mid 90s and had a T5 as a demonstrator.
The car changed Volvos image overnight and my recollections of the car and a little later the T5R are of what a good car this was and is a testament today as the car you have just bought shows. If fact it was so good they even did the BTCC with it.
Great coment thank you.
Hey that thing is sweet! I recently picked up a 97 850 turbo wagon gold as well. I'm going thru the whole car and giving it a refresh and a manual swap, so far so good. I'm excited to see where your new car gets!
The colour is great! More on this car coming soon.
Awesome motor Geoff with starship mileage 👌🏻 got to love a car that’s lived the life and is still bombing around 😎
Absolutely!
What a gorgeous bloody car!! I LOVE 850's!! To get rid of any stubborn Moss use white Vinegar Geoff.. works a treat.
Oooh good idea actually, have some at home!
Love LPG and it's probably why it's pulled such a high milage (no fuel washing oil off the cylinders ) .Sady UK are phasing LPG pumps out .I would swap to CNG but strangely there are only 13 petrol stations in the UK that sells it .
It's like they don't want a viable green option to electric.
Yeah the LPG is currently not working but I’ll see if I can find someone to resolve that
I've not heard anything about lpg being phased out anymore than diesel 🤷♂️.
It's a shame we're not seeing more lpg.. Loads of retailers around Birmingham
LPG is still kicking hard in Australia! Which is great since there are plenty of big 6 and 8 cylinders here, and it's around 1/2-2/3 the price of unleaded
@@19jacobob93 Half price in UK .I run my daily driver 8ltr 79 Cadillac Coupe Deville on it and it runs no difference on the street .On the strip i switch over to petrol plus nitrous .I run a Holley 4 barrel fuel injection carb replacement when on petrol .The turbo 400 gearbox is modified with a Gear Vendor overdrive underdrive unit so hardly turning any revs in top gear overdrive for economy .It turns the 3 speed into a 6 speed auto .
LPG gives the car a economy performance option at the flick of a switch .It easily passes emissions tests on either petrol or LPG , LPG cleaner .
What a brilliant purchase GBC.. it’s come up well and that headlining seem to be pretty intact too. Looking forward to the updates on this little gem!
That's fantastic! Definitely worth giving it some love. Then a long European road trip - maybe back to where it was made or the Volvo museum in Sweden.
What a fabulous car. Rare colour too! And that interior looks really clean to be fair! At least you have spares! Definitely a knackered battery that’s causing the electrical maladies! Great video fella!
Thank you! New battery etc. Missed my pre booked MOT slot but it’ll go in Monday.
Used to drive these for work. An absolutely stonking car. It's a shame it isn't the manual version, but on the plus side that'll save you from buying new tyres for it every month 😁.
That colour is absolutely amazing Geoff, I’ve never seen such a shade of JRG.. I’ve a Polish mate I worked with and he was telling me that back home his cousin has a Volvo on 800000 km and it still looks and runs like new and all it’s needed is a clutch and service items.
I did hear of one in Iraq that was hit with an anti tank missile and the following week it was seen driving again minus doors with quite an upset driver.
Brilliant comment! Yeah It's a really rare colour, more video coming soon on this
I love fast Volvo’s, so understated, Most other drivers don’t have a clue what they are until you embarrass them at the traffic lights in their Spoilered up RS
With these it's more on the dual carriage way, less so from the lights. Like accelerating from 40mph upwards is a joy!
These older Volvos are notorious for ABS module failures. You can remove them with an inverted torx and have them rebuilt
Good news... light has gone out!
had an 850 t5 in white once, loved making people on motorways think i was plod coming up behind them!
Yeah I bet that was fun!
Love these old brick Volvo's hope to find one soon

Ah sorry, tell me more? yeah the throttle can be a little jumpy
My dad once bought a job lot of high mileage Volvos from that era. They were all spot on despite doing around quarter of a million miles each.
The last of the cars that were capable of doing so.
What a great buy geoff love it👏👏
Loved my T5 and T6 and new a bloke with an 840 that had gone around the clock twice and was still going, I suspect it out lived him
Nice Geoff, she sounds awsome. My first motor was a old metro, was well battered. Then I got a k reg fiesta ghia, intermediate was a beauty to drive till the ex missus spun it on the A1 and wrote her off. Gutted. Love your work m8.
Not many k Reg fiestas around now!
It's lovely! Cleaned up a dream didn't it. Take care, Poo
nice car nice colour ,and leather always looks quality even when its worn ,the same with furniture.
I don't know what it is about Swedish cars - I've had two og Saab 9-5s in the past - a 2.0 SE and an Aero and I found them to be great cars. Neither Volvo nor Saab are interested in 0 to 60 times, they prefer to use the rocket launcher mode where it's most useful in overtaking.
Hihihi. So true. I just love smoking posers in BMW’s and Audî’s when pulling away from motorway toll stops 😂
@@robinforrest7680 Yeah - the look on their faces is priceless - of course they are in your rear view mirror when looking at them🤣

@Geoff Buys Cars I've got the total underdog 850 GLT wagon, A 1996 2.0 litre, 10 valve automatic with about 85K miles on it!!, It's not your usual battered 850, It's in really decent shape bar the O/S/F wing which has the usual 850 wing rot which your Swedish sticker will cover! Nice mid blue metallic paintwork, Columba alloys, Beige half leather interior and Nivomat rear suspension, Genuine Volvo 850 factory dog guard included!! Oh, update, I pulled them off with a pair of grips and some force, ha ha.
Oh the colour! Absolutely love it Geoff, can't wait for the content with it! Have to read some 850s with my OBD to see mileage
Best tip for a standard 850 T5 is to ditch the 15G Turbo and put on a 16T, Dump the orange injectors and fit white's then ditch the 4.3 ECU and get a remapped 4.4 ECU, Better starting, Power and fuel economy, I should know as i have done all the above on my 95 T5 manual wagon 👌
Email me a shopping list with some links, ha ha.
An awesome car and even better with the high mileage another great purchase.
Man I love that sound, I miss my old C70 terribly hearing that
I think this one is gonna hang around.
That's a specially evolved moss strain that only lives on cars. It's a moss of the Sterling genus.
Love it Geoff! What a little golden nugget that is! Great find, how did you come across it?

Love the t5 A ram raiders favourite back in the day
Beautiful model❤
Love the evocative and intoxicating sound of the force fed 5 pot. Looks like it could be a keeper but will need some TLC. I'd keep it off the roads until they've stopped the gritting. Plenty of content in just going through the car and picking the low hanging fruit sort of jobs I'd say.
TLC is on the way! Along with a load of parts I've ordered
Fix it up, get it back on the road. Great show.
The car deserves a bit of tlc wheel refurb paintwork sorted interior etc etc and I do like the gold paintwork 😂
Cool motor, if my P38 was to die beyond repair I'd look for an 850.
One of the last real great Volvo's.
There comes a point where some very high mileage cars are pretty much worthless while they still have plenty if life left in them......and at that point it can become a challenge to see how to keep them going maintained well. No depreciation, only running cost and maintenance.
Just get it sorted,LPG working, fix it up and enjoy. I think you bought a good one👍
Yeah there can’t be much of a market for high mileage cars!
@@GeoffBuysCars Well i live in The Netherlands and typical these Volvo's are almost all high mileage and still they got sold. Most have around 250/400k mls on them. The 240 series,700 and some 900 series are still very regular overhere with many with LPG conversions reaching starship mileage.
I work at an independant LR garage and we see high mileage cars all the time. Highest was a '05 Freelander TD4 with 550k mls in it and still drove around with valid MOT.
Just enjoy this old skool quality motoring, mate👍
I got a very clean ' 92 Astra Mk3 that i love,and a '04 Freelander so totally into the older stuff
Get down and dirty with the T-cut mate good coat of super resin polish after that and wallah new Volvo

Brilliant Geoff. I was kind of hoping for a 9-5 Aero, but they seem to be getting rarer? I’ve left my alerts on Gumtree and Autotrader since I bought Sovvagn, but the only ones that seem to come up for sale are post 2006 Edna’s.
Just as well I no longer live in the UK. At those prices I’d be buying a car every weekend 😂.

It was the 850 that got me into Volvos but I’ve only ever had V70’s (4) & XC70’s (9)……but they’re Fords and not a true Volvo like the 850’s, but I still love my XC70.

Nice Volvo - looking forward to seeing it bing worked on and the LPG system should not be too hard to revive - I run a Volvo S80 3.0 with LPG (of course) and the LPG system is quite simple. If you need any help with LPG ask away! 😅
Ah yes I know nothing about LPG, I think I might just find a specialist.
@@GeoffBuysCars It would be useful to tell us what brand of LPG is fitted and I guess it is a 5 cylinder engine.
I got a 2013 V40 D4 Cross Country (5 cylinder) and it’s ticked over 106,000 recently and it feels as good as new, and looking at it from the outside you wouldn’t even know! I don’t know what the fear is with mileage because if a car is well looked after then you haven’t got to worry! But people just want the newest and greatest things to show off to the neighbours and put on instagram 🙄
What, you haven't got a 72 plate car on the drive?! No, i've got an old broken caravan, two broken bikes and a few jerry cans. My neighbours love me.
@@GeoffBuysCars i don’t even have a drive Geoff haha! I’ll never buy new, give me a fleet of old crusty rust buckets any day of the week!

Another great buy Geoff! I shall keep an eye out to see if I spot this on my travels!
They're getting harder to find, but I tell you what, people get hung up on the turbos. If you can't get a turbo, a good petrol manual is just as much fun.
I’ve had over 50 cars then I found bmw and had most of them pre 2000’s and as I’ve aged I’ve moved to older mercs but I feel I’m transitioning to another stage of my life and I’m craving an old volvo😊

rid of it cos its in the way. Cheap to anyone who wants it! Manchester.
Lemme get back to you today.
Looking good Geoff like it🇬🇧👍
How did it record that many miles without breaking a couple of odometer gears (mine ceased at 140,000 miles or so)?
I agree about the sunroof. Its operation can be a bit temperamental and confusing getting it to seat properly into its recess at closing point. It takes a few attempts to get it right.
The spongy brake could be a warning that the master cylinder seal is on its way out. At which point the brake peddle may sink on the motorway when you attempt to apply it. Then you'll have to pump it rapidly to build up pressure.
Anyhow, very impressive for its mileage and that it still gave a good account of itself, despite sitting for so long.
I have no idea. Almost every 850 I’ve had has had failed odometers....!
“Pump and Pray “ brakes common in that era of vehicle.
Don’t let that Steve Woodward see that motor or he will be after ragging it for parts 😎 something about old Volvos cars that draws fans in from far and wide. I own a S60 D5 never misses a beat, would I sell it NO ( 57 plate )
0.8p purchase price per mile driven.

Better than a Tesla at 5,000,000p and zero miles driven.
Some may find my car buying mathematics a little skewed.
This is all I get in the comments from EV owners, I had a guy yesterday who did all the maths to tell me that my car was more expensive per mile than his EV... this was on the black mondeo video. But I paid £1500 for the Mondeo and the cheapest new EV is more than 10x that amount...
@@GeoffBuysCars having bought a 2.5 tonne barge wheeled battery for £50,000 ,EV owners are naturally defensive about their gullibility, clutching at straws with any dubious BS.
A high mileage Volvo station wagon practical and fast and at £650 a bargain even converted into aussie dollars these are rare in Australia but the classic cars that are selling for good are Toyotas the very early ones are rare and sell for a lot but of the classic british abd European cars aren't selling l saw a Morris 1000 ute sell for aud $5000 and thats a ute and they sell for more than a sedan we love our utes in Australia because they were invented hear its one thing Australia contributed to motoring and there one Jaguar and an old Mecedes that have been converted into utes
