Went looking for fat wood just yesterday wasn’t too sure what I was doing but watching this video I done exactly what you done on this video and got quite a bit
good to you haveing fun,, the thick amber stuff is often in the roots of huge stumps, lot of work to get at but rewarding,, i use a small grubing mattock to dig them out, (£15 from screwfix) im sure with bit more time you will find the good stuff,,
Thanks for the fatwood vid, admiring ur work and opinions from across the pond near nola. I agree so much with u about how it sucks when people lower their standards and litter, we got it over here as well, jeez maybe worse but we need more people like u guys and those of us who hold ourselves to a higher standard. Keep up the great ideals yall have my brothers.
Great video matey. Like the new kit 👍 Sadly not put the lesson you and Andy gave me on hunting for fat wood to good use so will need a refresher course 👍 Say hi to Leon for me. Cheers pal 👍
A couple of things to ask or say! first is when you thought you had found the gold mine I noticed a couple of things a lot of people are guilty of! you were standing up back bent over and you also had your kit on your back second as you were sawing you was nipping your saw and you can see it in the video, I would have taken my kit off and kneel so I was nearer to my work and have something under the work so it is easier to saw one last thing you may be able to help me with is how long can you store the wood for ( is there a sell-by date ) so to speak.
Thanks for the advise buddy - much appreciated.. As for fat wood storage, I've had some for 3 years now and it's still fine, I do keep it in sealed bags.. Hope this helps
Its quite easy actually, the problem he had is that he tried to process fat wood from pine trees that had fallen quite early into there death, now the knots even 6 ft up in a dead pine tree that is still standing will have much much more fat wood. another is mane roots and tap root, if you have a shovel of course. I have taken out a few experiments and found this is the case however it is hard to distinguish how long a tree has been dead for
Great video, despite several attempts, I am still yet to find my own fatwood and after watching your video, I am looking forward to taking my dog for a walk in my local coniferous woodland later, also I totally agree .... LEAVE .... NO .... TRACE!! It's not hard, don't be selfish. Its not big or clever, the Minority can and do ruin it for us, the Majority. BW from South Somerset
Nice video loved the intro thanks for the mention 👍👍 i will be looking for some fat wood in my new location as there is loads of old pine trees lying around atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍
Funny intro :) Thanks. Shame we didn't get to see you process the wood. Seeing the litter drives me crazy too. No respect or awareness of nature's beauty.
OK complete noob here with a couple of queries 1, where do we stand with the knives and the law in the UK? 2, you said you was going to show how to process it 3, just what do we use it for, I'm adding fire. Thanks in advance.
OK knives in the UK is a tricky one, private land, camp sites etc you should be OK, that's not to say is legal so to speak.. you have to be quite savvy. Processing it is a video to come, thank you for reminding me, I will do a dedicated video, although I have used it in several old videos.. Finally, you use it as a water resistant fire starter, the resin in the pine catches a spark very easy and burns for a while giving you a chance to start a fire in bad conditions.. I hope this lot helps 🙏🏼
Great video mate, Good to see you back at it. Hoping to get up to the forest of Dean this coming week so I'll let you know if i've actually learnt anything :P Already looking forward to seeing your next vid. did you bury Leon in the black bags?
hello really enjoyed the video as im off out on my first adventure very soon looking for fat wood and in a unrelated topic could you tell the brand of tactical trouser you have on in this video as they look exactly what i am looking for ? -p.s im with you both on people littering infact littering anywhere , i have ongoing battles with people who think its fine to thriw wrappers, scratch cards even cigarette butts, clearly poorly educated and disrespectful i had 2 people sat in a car outside my flat cracked the window a bit then started pushing out two pizza boxes , used napkins and then two drink cups this was around 6pm in daylight with people walking passed !! so god only knows how these poor excuses for civilised people would behave in a forest where no one can see them the mind boggles! 🤬- anyway great channel 👍 im late to the bushcraft party but enjoying learning from guys like you two who kindly share knowledge... god bless both 😇😇 👍- john
Forgive my spelling on this... the pants are Fajalraven Vidda Pro.. I kept looking for sales or discount codes because they are quite pricey! Good luck buddy 👍
@@WildernessAdventuresUK cheers pal i appreciate you taking the time to reply 👍 i had a feeling they were that brand and blimey your right they are expensive 😆 but last forever i hear so a sound investment i think i shall 'wet my beak' with a cheaper pair for now and if i really get bitten by the bushcraft bug i will treat myself to a pair... 👍
@@johnny0468 I find that tradesman pants are great, in my early videos I have a brown pair of Scruffs that cost around £40.. I'd recommend them all day as those pants are still going strong (watch the ecozoom video for reference)
Oh man there’s some disgusting people around leaving all that crap around. Interesting video, I knew that resin accumulated around the limbs but had no idea about top of the root system too. Every day is a school day.
the problem you had is that you tried to process fat wood from pine trees that had fallen quite early into there death now the knots even 6 ft up in a dead pine tree that is still standing will have much much more fat wood this is because gravity has has a longer affect on the tree sap. another is main roots and tap root, if you have a shovel of course. I have taken out a few experiments and found this is the case however it is hard to distinguish how long a tree has been dead for. Would love to know where this forest is 😅
So, fatwood. What's that all about? I'm none the wiser from watching the vid although reading through the comments I learn that it to do with making a fire.
Basically it pine wood impregnated with pine resin, it's highly flammable, waterproof and a small bit will burn for quite a while - look at it as nature's fire lighter.. I've done several other videos on the subject all on the channel

Off to look for fatwood today
Humans are pigs. I have picked up a lot of "Stuff" in the woods. It always amazes me how people treat our world.
So true bud - i couldn't agree more!
Hi mate. Does Sitka pine produce fat wood. Thanks
They produce a lot of resin (usually white in colour on the bark of the tree) so my answer is yes although I've never used any from Sitka
Also is there a special tree that’s best for fat wood?
Pine trees are the best, just go and spend a day in a pine forest and look around all the fallen trees
If you give the video a thumbs up then comment 👍 does that count as four?
Keep doing it and I'll let you know pal 😉
Good stuff mate, ill be going out having a look myself now.
Do you not cut into the dead stump?
I usually try to pull it out of the ground then cut into it
Oh man there’s some disgusting people around leaving all that crap around. Interesting video, I knew that resin accumulated around the limbs but had no idea about top of the root system too. Every day is a school day.
If you can't find pine , what else to look out for .
Unfortunately fatwood is only availabe in pine - if you cant find pine trees, maybe look for Birch Bark
the problem you had is that you tried to process fat wood from pine trees that had fallen quite early into there death now the knots even 6 ft up in a dead pine tree that is still standing will have much much more fat wood this is because gravity has has a longer affect on the tree sap. another is main roots and tap root, if you have a shovel of course. Thanks for the info - the wood is in the Manchester area bud
@@WildernessAdventuresUK I was also hoping to visit this place cos it's beautiful. I'm in Manchester so I wonder if you could name the forest?
@@somdov dm me on insta Sam, I don't want to put it out in the open
What forest is that ?
It's a pine forest
What is fat wood for??
Surely skinny wood is better for the environment?
