I live in FL. If my water storage gets moldy, would putting water purification tablet in it, make the water safe to drink? Also, if I buy a brand new 5 gal water cooler/jug, is there a need to wash it? Thanks.
Right about now i can see some peeps in Texas and California maybe saying to them self why i could not have done this knowing whats going on now with all this water drought but you can always boil the water to drink and cook with boil water is one of the best.
Uh...we DID know that. Water collection and storage isn't a new thing here. And when you posted that comment a year ago, we were actually getting flooding.
I've heard you should never use a used barrel as it's in possible to get the prior contaminants out of the plastic. That's just what I've heard though my want to do some double checking for yourself, just a thought for you. Thanks for the video!
Ryan Result This is a food-grade barrel and has only been used for pickles. I definitely wouldn’t use anything that had other chemicals or was no food-grade. Thanks for watching.
I have city water and stored it in brand new 30 gallon tanks that I had scrubbed clean also. I opened them to see what the water looked like today after only six months and one is full of green colored algae or something. The other had some small blueish colored circular growths floating on the surface as well as some green substance settled to the bottom............... I'm watching videos now to learn how to solve this issue....no luck yet. Apparently city water does go bad too.
+JohnEtattoo I store my city's drinking water in clear 2 liter soda bottles without any other disinfection and have never had any issues you describe. You have other problems( your own plumbing or your city has a problem) that you are not aware of.
+JohnEtattoo - Depends on how bad your city water is....SC, where I live in most locations have around .077 TDS (Total Dissolved solids) That is one reason I am still using the same Zero Water Filter that I installed Feb. 29th, 2016....Most states have much higher readings than that, some have told me they have up .375 and one lady swore she had 475.5 which I find difficult to believe...If your city water has high TDS there is that much more that you have to do make your water safe for several years....I keep mine in a closet where it stays cool and in a blue never used 55 gallon drum...I also use Aquamira water treatment (Chorine Dioxide)....My water is still perfect after three years as I checked it recently....You can buy a TDS tester from Amazon...It will tell you how high your Total Dissolved Solids are immediatly...I am not an expert John and can only tell you what I have experienced...I will include a link if you want to purchase the tester, but remember it will not tell you how much bacteria you have in your water, only TDS, which is still very important....You didn't say what chemical you used to treat the water before you sealed it up? Also included a link for the Aquamira chemical treatment....Hope this helps my friend... www.amazon.com/Aquamira-Technologies-Water-Treatment-2-Ounce/dp/B00B39KSUO?ie=UTF8&keywords=water%20treatment%20drops&qid=1462852872&ref_=sr_1_2&sr=8-2 www.amazon.com/HM-Digital-TDS-EZ-Measurement-Resolution/dp/B002C0A7ZY?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_sfl_title_46&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
I hope you've learned more about water storage and purification over the last 7 years. There's a reason practically every military on the world doesn't use stabilized o2 for water storage or purification.
@@donnapoolejackofalltrades7827 prior service navy hospital corpsman, 3 years FMF with 2nd Marine division. We use regular old bleach because its extremely cheap to just buy a bottle of bleach, you get thousands of uses out of 1 bottle, its easy to store, and its safe to use and you cant really screw it up. 1 capful treats an entire waterbull and if you over do it, youll taste it in the water so youll know at that point its not safe to drink. When youre provoding water for an entire army youre not really worried about water sitting for 10 years, more like 3 days to a week maximum because the water in the water bull will be empty by then. The bleach is just used to keep water free of bacteria when its sitting in the sun and it does have to be tested daily for the concentrate of bleach in PPM with a standard pool chlorine test kit. Bleach/chlorine DOES evaporate so it needs to be tested DAILY to make sure the chlorine PPM does not fall below the proper chlorimation level.

I am confused. Noone gives a definitive answer. I bought 5 55 gal drums that had fritos in them. Very clean. What do I put in the h20 to keep it drinkable/ A simple question with no concrete answers.
not sure about the math but a family of 5 drinking a gallon each a day ….5(Gallons)x10(days) is 50 gallons......that is not enough for two weeks of water lol......only reason I want to live next to a river or the ocean lol
Thanks for the Video clip! , I would appreciate your opinion. It is a good advice to the people and by watching the video we get ideas. It is a smashing exclusive guide for getting prepared for a mega drought without the normal expense.
I know this video is old, but wanted to say not to use a garden hose as it contains chems and germs you don't want in your body. You need to get a food grade hose to pour water in or out.
yeah, someone commented that previously and I got a food-grade RV hose. I did a follow up video. Funny, I grew up in an age where we all drank out of garden hoses. Nowadays, everything can supposedly hurt you.
Garden hose is fine, adding the bleach (no special product required) and you are good. I've stored water for five years and it comes out fine. I would not go longer than five years at a time but I suppose you could.

HI, what video did you see and how many drops did you use for the 55 gallon water barrel, and where did you get it?
Nice barrel. Thanks for the video!
Look into treating with iodine. Like the barrel, any vinegar smell or taste residue?
No taste residue. I had to clean them several times to get the pickle smell out though.

How many drops of stabilized oxygen did you for 55 gallon water barrel?
55 x 10 = 550 🤔
Clicked to see why not to use bleach. No explanation.
Maybe should be retitled "Here's my new water storage barrel".
Will this work for a camelback too?

Why doesn't the military use it ? please explain

Where do you get your barrel.

These barrels are in Craigslist, usually for about $40. Search for rain barrel or pickle barrel

Is there a ratio per gallon you go by. I don't want it to be like drinking pool water. Someone told me a drop per gallon. Is that right ?
you can use vinegar
One tablespoon per 5 gallons
what stabilized oxygen is that?
it's this stuff here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001EXTOAO/
