    how do you find source music for these shows? whenever I have a theme idea, I can never find music that will fit or even be playable by a marching band. any suggestions welcome

    • @therealnocommonsense
      @therealnocommonsense Před 21 dnem +2

      Most of the music I end up using for shows I actually find by accident. Whenever I hear a piece that I think has even a little bit of potential I will save it and add in into a playlist. Doing this long enough will give you a large catalog of different pieces of music that you can pick and choose from whenever you decide to write a show. That's at least what I do. hope this helps, have a great rest of your day and God bless you!

    Hey, I’m getting a show put together as well, called the Dream. I’m thinking of using Brahms lullaby as a pre show; Ride by Samuel Hazo as the opener/ first scene, then a original work by me (which ought to be good) then either the seal lullaby or sleep by Whitacre, then Tank!, and for the finale Paul’s Dream and My Roads lead into the desert from Dune. Pretty epic, right?

  • @Wollabeat
    @Wollabeat Před 26 dny

    good job again man!
    how do you approach writing the score for a show?

    • @therealnocommonsense
      @therealnocommonsense Před 26 dny +3

      I always start out with trying to flesh out the theme or story behind the show. That will make the writing process easier later down the line. Once I have that figured out I will venture out and try to find any type of music that I think will go well with the theme. I don't try to restrict myself to orchestral and concert band music only. I've used brass ensembles, trumpet quartets, movie soundtracks, and even some EDM! You're not limited to a specific genre to take inspiration from.
      Try not to get frustrated when composing, for me, it is trial and error, trial and error, trial and error. I'll write something down and see if it sticks, if I don't like it, I'll either scrap what I originally wrote all together or add it into a separate score for later use.
      For instance, Act 3 of this show was originally Act 1, I changed the source music for Act 2 four times before I settled on something, and Act 4 did not exist until about 2 weeks ago!. It is a long windy road to reach the finished product, and that's ok. By always experimenting with new styles and techniques, it has over the years allowed me to refine my own distinct sound.
      Hope this helps. Have a great rest of your day and God bless you!

    • @therealnocommonsense
      @therealnocommonsense Před 27 dny

      @@kuwumiefn6943
      1. MDL is only available on musescore 3 and has been for a couple of years now.
      2. I think you might be a little confused, I wrote the entire show myself, there was not another person that did percussion 😁.
      3. If you add a 32nd tremolo onto the 3rd sizzle cymbal, it'll sound like a sus. cymbal.
      Hope this helps, God bless you!

    • @CantEven
      @CantEven Před 27 dny

      @@kuwumiefn6943 It is also actually possible to get the MDL sounds in MuseScore 4, although it's admittedly kind of a hassle. Just look up "Musescore 4 - Adding MDL Sounds Tutorial" on youtube and it should be the first result. The new sounds in Musescore 4 also (somewhat) improved the percussion situation, so if you go to the "suspended cymbal" instrument and put a 32nd tremelo on it it sounds fantastic.
