  • During this lecture, Sony Artisan of Imagery Thibault Roland will discuss black and white photography. He will illustrate how important it is to visualize and build an image, and how your overall photography work (including color) can benefit from the rigorous process of creating in B&W.

So helpful. I'm just starting to get into B&W, can't wait to get in the field with my IR converted camera. Thanks!

Thanks for the vid Sony & B&H. When looking at the building image at the 16 minute mark, couldn't help thinking for this type of image if doing a multi-exposure bracket shot on a tripod might be beneficial to the dynamic range even thow it probably is not needed with the software available these days.

Great presentation. I would love to see a "real time" edit of one of his images following his work flow rather than static slides. He made the steps clear, but seeing him make the adjustments and how he thinks about his image would be fantastic. Thanks.

I have hired him and he frequently takes several hours to prepare each image.

I get that HDR impression or even AI. But if that’s his style he should keep at it.

Nice presentation - I do often think B&W is cheating a bit, many (but not all) of the photos could have been edited in colour to achieve similar effects.

4:58 but you said in start that color is only plain.... now you are saying you are fixing color photo because of color cast or bad colors, would you leave it in color if colors were good?
Please be consistent, if you shoot for black and white than it does not matter what colors are or is there color cast, you want BW remember, you are not interested in color so what ever it is it does not matter and does not have to do with anything.
But if you are talking about fixing or saving bad color images that is totally different story. For me and I would bet it is the case with many photos, this one castle with blue cast is much better and has much more potential like this, in color and with this blue cast and I would even say these two you are showing on screen color one is better even in this state without heavy edit. If you dont believe me give it to some professional high ranking retoucher/editor and your mind will be blown with the results.
And finally what the f is your webcam setup with that fake overdone blur and floating head supposed to tell us? It is better to not have video than to have video like that, and your iphone but without audio filters would record the sound 700 times better than whatever you are using now, sorry for negative comments but please look at your interviewer sound, video and lighting setup, pay close attention and ask him for help I bet he would help you. I know you have some nice work "behind" you not literally, because that one we can not see because fake fog, instead I mean on your portfolio and this what you are showing simply does not go with your work, all this is really honest friendly critique even if it does not sound like that and I know it does not but your setup for this video call is really horrible and is not representing you as it should. If nothing else you can hire someone to help you, you can rent the gear. BH Events should not allow this to exist.
Once again I am really sorry for negative comments, but believe me if you can it is for your own good and this has only good intentions, If you dont believe me which is default reaction, go see for yourself, it is easy and will not take 30 minutes of your time, find friend with nice video and audio setup, preferably in your city or close, and preferably one who does youtube or any kind of video work for some time, record fast interview style talk, and compare that with this one here and see for yourself. Most people would not tell you this even if they mean it, but I can, I dont have clue who you are, I dont care for you, you dont know who I am, you dont care for me, you can even ignore it, but sometime in the future when you do record proper video you will remember this, so you are welcome in advance and forgive me once again for harsh words 😁😁
