In this video take a look at the new Justin Chancellor Crybaby Wah from Jim Dunlop. The JCT95, on the surface, is a bass wah... but does it work for guitar? Let's find out!
The JCT95 is more than just a wah. It's three different effects in one. You get a wah circuit which is based around a Red Fasel inductor and voiced to Justin Chancellors needs. You also get a UK Filter Mode which acts as a filter sweep, shaving off the high end and sweeping it back in. If that's not enough, you also get a fuzz which can be paired with the wah footplate, or used as a standalone fuzz tone.
For the bass tones in the video I am using a Sterling by Music Man Sub 5 bass plugged into the Line 6 Helix Rack which is running a model of an Ampeg SVT. For the guitar tones I am using my Shergold Provocateur guitar plugged into the Blackstar HT20 MKii which is running into the Two Notes Torpedo Captor X which is running an IR of a Bassman style cab.

Kinda sounds like Adam Jones on the entirety of Fear Inoculum. And that sounded great.
In that case, I think it's a job well done for Dunlop. I'm not at all familiar with most of Tool's material, but if someone that likes Tool can hear the comparison then Dunlop have nailed it!
@@LeighFugeGuitar it's supposed to recreate Justin Chancellor's eq and wah settings, but on the lead guitar bits it sounds amazing. I'd buy one for myself but I'm broke.

If I learned anything as a bass player who got more serious with the guitar is the followig: If it says "bass" on it, it doesnt meand that only bass sounds good through it. I've been playing my guitars through a rig consisting predominantly of things voiced for bass and guitar sounds huge...
Agreed! A friend of mine uses a Bass Crybaby with his guitar rig because he prefers the sweep of the wah over the regular guitar Crybabyâs.
If it sounds good, use it!

Yeah exactly, just because it says bass, it doesn't mean it can only be used for bass. I know someone who uses a Bass crybaby with his guitar rig because he just prefers the sound of that wah vs. a regular guitar Crybaby. As long as it inspires you and it sounds good then you're winning!

I have an Orange bass butler, and that sounds incredible on guitar as well as bass. I reckon there's a whole untapped mine of bass pedals on guitar.
That's interesting, do you use it as a drive pedal with guitar? I know it's a preamp pedal so it's the sort of thing you could just run into the PA without an amp for bass. Some bass pedals are great tone shapers (I guess because a lot of bassists like to DI) so I can see why they'd be interesting on guitar.
@@LeighFugeGuitar I'm in a band with two bassists and no guitars. I run a spector 6 string which I used to split between a guitar amp and bass amp. (Peavey Windsor and ashdown MAG) this got old hauling it all around, so I used a BDI21 for the bass side, , and a huge pedalboard full of guitar pedals on the guitar side with a mooer radar . It's a huge convoluted setup... then I saw my Favourite Bassist (Morgan Nichols...absolute legend) had a similar setup, but now had designed, with orange, an all in one solution in the Bass Butler.
It's a modelled ampeg with a delicious optical compressor on one side, and a Marshall anniversary guitar on the other into exceptional IRs. I just had it modified to have an effects loop put in after the drive. Turn off the bass side and it is an exceptional guitar pedal in its own right.
This could be a great wah/fuzz on a downtuned guitar board with its lower frequency focus
It would sound amazing with a down tuned guitar! Itâs already voiced to handle the lows
Great demo. The one difference is that huge sub synthy type territory one gets on a bass when using the U.K. filter... sounds mental on bass.

It's a fun wah, it's actually pretty good on guitar too, I guess even though its voiced for bass, it's not off the table for guitar. It's definitely not a "typical" wah when you use it on guitar, but it's great if you want something a little different.
@@LeighFugeGuitar brent hinds, one of the guitarists of mastodon, uses a dunlop bass wah because it exaggerates the effect and he likes it. if its good enough for him its valid

Thanks for checking out the video and leaving a comment! Yeah it's super versatile, it's surprising how well it works on guitar. Even though the frequency range is tuned for bass, it does sit pretty nicely as a guitar wah. Having the fuzz is a nice, fun bonus too. It's a very versatile wah!
Interesting! I've been looking for a fuzz wah and will have to consider this one. Do you know if the fuzz happens to come before or after the wah? Thanks!
I'm not 100% sure... but I would think before the wah like a typical fuzz. It kinda feels that way to me anyway because the wah is very pronounced, I find when you put fuzz after the wah, it softens the wah sound.
Spring loaded is why I prefer Bass wah for guitar, Is there a mini version? that thing is huuge!
A mini version would be cool, but I suspect it would be tricky to include all the switching options on a smaller unit.
There are a few spring loaded guitar wahs too. My favourite is the Billy Duffy signature Crybaby, but they only made maybe 500 or so... they sometimes pop up on eBay. It's basically a 535Q Crybaby with an extra mode which is modelled on Mick Ronsons wah.
