      I like the EV PL 33 on Kick and a pair of T.Bone RB 500 ribbon microphones as overhead or room mics. I would be great to see a comparison between the RB500s and the SE Electronics X1Rs.

      Audix Dp7 drum mic set.
      Absolutely amazing mics.
      Just replace the drum clamps for stands.

      In the last months I fell in love with Shure PG52. It's kinda poor man's Beta 52, but with the right placement it actually just needs a cut around 250 hz - and I like it better than the Beta 52. As you can guess, I prefer less pre-eqd mics.

      I don't know if they are still made, but Samson had a drum mic kit with 7 mics ($350 approx), and the Kick mic the Qkick was impressive sounding for such a cheap mic.

    I’ve gotten good results with e604s for toms surprisingly. Back when the audio techinca atm25 was only 100$ used those were great. Too bad too many people found out how great they are and. Now they are 200+

      I finally bought one, and it's in the post at the moment. Definitely not what would be classified as an "affordable" mic though! I'm very interested to see how it fares against my Telefunken M80...

    sE Electronics is such a massively underrated company. I absolutely love my X1 S vocal mic, super clean and clear, good bass, amazing price. I'd love to get my hands on a sE2200 or even their sE4400a. Everything they make is affordable and beautiful and sounds amazing.

    Great video as ever man! I almost bought a pair of these X1R recently. I've had a trusty X1 for about 10+ years and its most used as outside kick mic it sounds great. Really punch above their price point the SE stuff.
    V7X looks great, going to pick one up to try as an SM7b alternative.

    i have never heard of SE before up until i came across your videos and NTM session. i end up purchasing a pair of se7 condenser mics and has been the best mic purchase i have done. i have not used a Ribbon mic and looking forward in adding one of those to my mic library. keep up the awesome job !

    Your videos are always a service for the audio community :) It's also interesting to hear your perspective on overhead mics. I still prefer small condenser mics, but one time I used the X1Rs as room mics and they sound great! So (dear reader) try this out when you get the chance ;)

    This is perfect! I've been researching drum mics the last few days. I've just use a lot of SM57s and cheaper Shures. I just upgrade my mic pre's so now I can record 16 channels now. Definitely getting some SE electronics mics now. I need a bottom snare, hi hat and room mic.

    Thanks again for this video. As I am a home studio producer, I'm always looking for versatile mics that can be placed everywhere. As my drumroom sucks because of the low height I was trying out different methods. But since years I am interested in the X1R as room mics or overheads as well as guitar mics. So I even prefered the X1Rs in the video as room mics. This is a good chance to get some, thanks for your work Kohle!

    Great video as always! I have recorded drums for a while, but have not yet invested in next level mics. I am quite happy with the SM57 on the snare and the Beta 91 on the kick, but the overheads really needs an upgrade. It was helpfull seing the pros and cons from bright and dark mics. Over all i preferred the darker sounding pair as well

    Stumbled on your channel today and had to subscribe! Those SE8's sound great, I'm currently using the Rode M5 ($199-pair) for drum overheads and I love them- very honest sound. I think they're worth checking out for anyone on a budget. They're great on acoustic guitar and I even like using a single M5 as a vocal mic. Keep the awesome videos coming man. Cheers from NC-USA.
