While tempting going balls deep into hero hammer isn't needed since with 1 and can flex into 1 for a cp on perspective that's basically righteous crusaders
Something I've learnt after half a dozen games or Champions of Russ, you don't need more than 4 characters. Because you already start with 1 saga complete (usually warrior born for advance and charge), Bjorn, Ragnar or Captain with Black Death will get you Beastslayer. Ulrik, Captain or any other 5 wound characters with a plasma pistol will usually get you saga of the Bear. Logan or Captain with Jump pack can get you Saga of Majesty if your opponent isn't careful, although in competitive play i usually see that saga as a dud and use the strat to count it as complete instead. Just 1 CP to increase the OC of a target unit.
So you only need to actively prepare to do is kill vehicles and and give characters hazardous weapons. Just don't give their unit hazardous weapons or you can't put the wounds on the character
