I made this video 10+ years ago to help pull myself out of a rut when I was unemployed and feeling pretty sad about the world. Soon after, I was able to return to work and promptly forgot about it. Thank you all for the nice comments through the years--I had not before and have not since done any video editing so enjoy the sole product of someone who was down on his luck for a while.

I really miss this show. My high schooling days were the best especially when this would come on around midnight. Not gonna lie I would always anticipate on the reveal of the ingredients and how Kaga would shout them out. I use to get pissed when he would say the foods in a calm manner instead of shouting them out lol. That would be the best part of the show. Also R.I.P to the Italian Iron Chef. I didn't know he passed away back in 2019 from a nasty fall. He was really good!!!!!
I like how he isn't feeling it for a few of these. One day it's "tomatoes, whatever" then it's "TOOOMAAAAAAAATO!!!"
He got far less animated in later seasons, basically every announcement from 1994-95 was really over the top, so good.
@@TassieDinkum90, I wonder if it had anything with do with them repeating various secret ingredients, and him being far less animated was more of the feeling of: "All right, we've done this one already".
@@tomdalfonzo9959 I’ve got a feeling it’s because by the time he toned it down, around 1998, the show went mainstream here and shocked them in ratings so he might’ve wanted to cater to us in a calmer tone.
I hear you all on the "toned it down later in the show's run", but I still want to believe that the character of the Chairman thinks foie gras is ho-hum, but he is ALL IN on cabbage.
The look on Kenichi's face when the chairman say yogurt is priceless.
Chen was absolutely pissed off because what in Chinese cooking can you cook using yogurt! Let alone I never ever eat yogurt in the first place!

The yogurt battle is still one of my favorites. Such an unusual ingredient to cook with, yet both contestants came up with a good lineup of dishes. Props to the Iron Chef Chinese for cooking with it.

If I remember correctly, after being flabbergasted by that yogurt theme reveal, my man Chen Kenichi made some spicy meat dish and just dumped yogurt on it in the last second as though he had completely forgotten what the theme was and he fucking won.
Eh, he got lucky, but spicy food and yogurt go surprisingly well, that's why it's a pretty common pairing in india
He followed the rules: yogurt was required to be in or on the dish. His other dishes probably put him over the top though.
"Spicy meat dish with some dairy product used as a sauce" is like 10% of all Indian food, so he accidentally made art
@@Ramboost007 Haha, I see. Though knowing this now I am sure Iron Chef Kenichi was well aware of Indian cuisine, even if he didn't specialize in it. But it's funnier to think that he accidentally made it but still won. 😄

Was actually his reaction after Yogurt was announced, as he had 0 clue of what to do with it.
You should've seen Sakai's face when wine was introduced as the theme. He was like "Why me?" while his opponent Etsuo Jou was "YES!"

@@karthus006there was also the time the challenger was all about Japanese or Chinese food one or the other, so the theme was rice. But he decided to go against the French chef and Sakai was frustrated saying rice isn't part of French food.

Yukari Yakumo actually the real reason is that yogurt is non-existent in Chinese cuisine but he pulled off a win in that match surprisingly.

@@AdirondackRuby I would have thought the fact that Foie Gras, Shark Fins, Swallows Nest, Caviar and Truffles were used in every other battle cost more, actually (I think Kobe was the only Iron Chef who generally didn't use any of these ingredients, and almost all of the challengers did).
@@Potterholic1 Fair point. I was just saying that based on the information I read about the show. Hard to pin down a true cost, but the ingredients seemingly added up to about $7 Million (with excess/leftover going to the Hattori Nutrition College)
