I rewatched this video last night and had some serious aha moments. I have been trying to get up on foil with speed and then getting out of control when I do get on foil. I also have been turning upwind too much on foil and then breaching. As a sailor, my instinct is to turn upwind to de-power but turns out that just powered me up even more. The aha moment was 1) turn slightly downwind on foil to depower (also sheet out), 2) Keep weight on my front foot as I pump (I was keeping it on the back foot to get the foil to lift), 3) Scoot as I pump 4) Pump in a circular motion. I'm going to try to put this all together today. Thanks for the great content! I watch a ton of videos and your series on winging has the most nuggets of information that's actually useful. Mahalo.
Well done guys👍 Just what a 49yr old surfer needed to nail the take off I've been to reliant on strong wind to get me on foil. We have good winds coming Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I'm going to try this.🤙🤘👊
Thank you Damien and Glen for sharing your knowledge. You are truly spreading love and happiness in a world that needs it so much. That is the best thing anyone can do with their life. You are making the world a better place!
Thank you so much guys. The best instructional videos ever!. Last weekend I stated foiling behind the 🚣♂️ and now I have to put the two together ❤. I can fly the wing without issues.
Thanks Demian for the prompt reply. Seems to me that you showed clockwise circular motion. I combined your advice of punching the water to get the wing flying up, then pulled it down. So it's counterclockwise motion and the wing tip didn't hit the water. I found clarity from your video. Thanks a ton!
Awesome glad you found the way to make it work. Sometimes it's hard to understand questions but happy to hear you are rocking..... Enjoy! We appreciate you.
Great video! Finally someone start talking about this scooting motion. This is exactly what helped me to start getting on foil about a month ago. I compared it to a dock start where you want to push you board forward first, but using your feet instead of hands and use the wing to leverage against it.
I tried this today, namely keeping the board flat whilst scooting the board forward, and pulling yourself forward on each pump. This definitely is a game changer for me! I was focusing way too much on trying to get the nose of the board up with my pumps, which induced more drag and slowed me down instead. Something I learnt today was to be more crouched with my weight way more forward when pumping the wing. Keeping my weight well over my front foot. The other thing was to be less aggressive with the pumps, making them smaller and focusing more on technique. Lastly, as soon as the foil started flying, to level out the board immediately, and then lowering the nose of the wing to generate more power. Hope this helps those who are struggling.
Another good video. I've watched several now and gotten some good nuggets from each one on how to improve technique. In addition to pumping, thanks for addressing after getting up on foil and what happens next - heading upwind.
Thanks, some valuable tips. I've been doing it for a month and getting better and better, but my pumping is still a hit n miss scenario. This does clear up a few things.
super useful Damo, I love the scoop and lift motion as well as skooshing along the floor in your socks like tom cruise. I'm thinking this will eventually add a couple of knots to my low end, because I know once i'm up on foil I'll be able to go in nothing . . . .
Very good. Last time I was out water was 1 degree celcius but we got a few minutes sun. Big chop but I got 2-3 streaks of foilriding of 10 sec. I def break with the foil - stalling it vertical. Great tip. Very helpful videos. I’m a fan!!
Excelente video! From argentina! That exactly happened to me! Finally progressed, got the foil up, controlling foil, so happy! But the next day it was impossible! So frustrated!! Great tips!
No, thank you!! I finally went down wind a few times yesterday for the first time, standing up and it was AWESOME!! I don't do any other water/snow sports! Such an amazing feeling, only the beginning too.@@DamienLeroyCZcams
Excellent tips, thanks a lot. Will try to incorporate the scooping, sliding and front pumping technique tomorrow. Have been trying without foot straps but put them on for tomorrow's session. What do you guys think - better to learn with straps or without? And what about the angles? I figured closer to the center for the front leg straps will help at first and more to the edges when skill comes along (probably when up on the foil).
Can't hurt to try for sure... Usually just a front one is good to have a little leverage but if your back strap is not in the right place it can be hard to foil. It is all preference and we also have a video on Straps vs strapless might help as well or the right position of the foil to help make sure you are in the right place. You will get it stay at it... czcams.com/video/UzM7WRMPErc/video.html czcams.com/video/NXaJJqqaGCY/video.html
Great Tips... first time up on foil today - certainly didnt look anything like you!!! About 0.0005 seconds of chaos but what a buzz!!! Do one about how to wipe out safely :-)
That's awesome pumping technique video, Demian! Juat a quick question, the circular motion you show, would it be a clockwise or counterclockwise? Thanks
I would say try them both and see what is comfortable for you! The goal is to scoop air and have it lift you up. Likely it will be high to low or clockwise.
Wish you did a video on getting on the foil from pumping to trimming the board , showing mistakes . I have large kit i am slow to get planning lots of the time the front of the board comes up and slams down . And some days i get on the plan and i am on the foil for ages Tried moving the mast , shims move my weight ! . There is so much content on line . Would be good to see Mistakes done by beginners then then How to get it right . Thanks for the great content
"Winging is so hard", he's been doing it 2 months and he's a pro :P Clearly these homies haven't done much windsurfing! But thanks for video - looking forward to trying the scoop out.
Windsurfing is a hardest sport by far, I sail with tons of kiters , these guys go from zero to hero in one season it seems. Winging well i am learning , not yet up on foil with a wing ( with a windsurf setups yes) so that remains to be seen .
I’m at session 4 . Have the naish sup board 125ltr and jet foil 2000. I think the conditions haven’t been idea. One or 2 of these sessions I had very little wind. Going out tomorrow and I’m going to try this scooping the air method and scooting the board forward . The slow motion video is good to see exactly what your doing. Very frustrated at the moment . Wish me luck. I will let you know if I get it
It always takes a little more wind in the beginning as you just are learning everything... Find a flat water location.... You will get it don't give up, we all got frustrated... Took me 4 days just to get up... No joke.. I was on a very very small board a learned my lesson what not to do :). You will get it..... Hope it goes well today!
Hey Damien & Gwen. First off, your videos are awesome. Got a quick question. When I watch videos on pumping the wing, going to the left for example (left foot forward) , some videos look like the pumping is counter clockwise and some look like the motion is clockwise? Does it matter?
I would think of it more like a scooping sensation and more high to low so it is trying to lift you up onto foil vs sideways! I hope that makes sense.... Check this one: czcams.com/video/ZSJujYM19Us/video.html
Something I have never heard mentioned in all these videos is to make sure your wing is pumped up enough. I was battling for ages to get on the foil because the wing was under inflated.
Thank you . I’m okay riding it’s happening when I’m pumping in light wind and as it seems I’m going to start foiling the wing tip ends up in front on the board as though I’m going to run it over. I’ll try to get video
Essentially you want the the technique to maximize fluid velocity over the foil. Foil lift force = Lift Coefficient x Foil Area x Fluid Velocity squared x fluid density / 2 x gravity
Small tips for beginners: if you put pressure on your front leg but the nose of your board still lifts too high, that’s means that you need to move forward your back leg

Is it just me, or does anyone else notice that how using this technique (and watching slow motion) the wing very closely mimics a birds wing flapping, since the flex in the wing changes its attitude to the wind on the up sing, then it engages again on the down swing. Obviously not the original intent of the less rigid rig design, but a clear advantage over a more rigid (full battened windsurfing sail) rig.
@@DamienLeroyCZcams Ha - typo, see edit above - I wrote of when I meant over. I 100% agree. The flapping motion would not work nearly as well with a rigid rig, just interesting that the lack of rigidity which would normally be considered a weakness when it comes to lift efficiency is in this case an advantage. Damien - thank you again for these amazing videos. You guys do an incredible job of conveying the key information in a clear and digestible way and even explain the reasoning behind the action.
