  • I Went From Portland to Montana to Get Tacos. 20 Hours!!!
    I had a craving for tacos from somewhere I had never had tacos before. I asked online where the best tacos were. A few people said Taco Treat in Havre, Montana. So, I got on the Amtrak Empire Builder and went to Havre, MT, 20 hours away. It didn't go like I wanted.

      I live in FL which honestly is not a good state for tacos. I had Buckaboo’s recently and they were good but it is a chain. I have found best tacos 🌮 are in places out West like Arizona and San Diego.

    Good on you for upgrading that woman. One time I asked a guy in Little Rock, AR where to eat. He pointed at a place, then secretly paid for our meal, with drinks. That was 2015. I'll never forget that. We could all use some more kindness.

    • @WorldAccordingToBriggs
      @WorldAccordingToBriggs  Před 2 měsíci +13

      Agreed. I was going to ask her if that it would be ok but than I thought how it would probably seem to a 25 year old girl if a 50 year old man asks to do something like that. She would probably feel uncomfortable.

      I once had a good opportunity to do something similar. I was in a restaurant watching a young fella who had taken his mother? grandmother? aunt? out to lunch. I knew that that young fella was doing something both good and wise, and I thanked him for it. Regrettably, I dropped the ball on picking up his tab. Next time.

    I lived in Havre. My dad was stationed at a radar base north of the town. We lived there from 1968-1972. I remember the Swiss Chalet being a couple blocks from our house. I then lived 40 miles west in Rudyard from 1990-1993. Commuted to Northern Montana College and remembered Artic Circle being around. Quite a bit of history in the town actually. Triple Dog Brewery makes great beer. Recognized many spots that you walked by. Parker's Barbeque Pit used to be an auto shop and I remember sitting in there as a 5-6 year old with my dad waiting for the car repair to be completed. Locals think Taco Treat is good but I don't think its something to brag on. Thanks for the memories.

    Next time you go to Havre go to Havre Beneath the Streets. There are tunnels under the town that were built when a big part of town burned. It is worth the walk through. There is a great pie place there also but I cannot remember the name of it. The drive in in the south of town is good also. It was really nice of you to upgrade the lady with the kids. When I flew with my 3 kids I would upgrade us all to 1st class and try to get the front row. The look on peoples faces when my son would be laughing about all the leg room he had was worth the expense. There always seemed to be one steward that would baby my kids so I could have a drink and relax. Stay safe and healthy.

    That was fun Briggs. You have me thinking about doing a similar trip to somewhere/nowhere, but my starting point is L.A.
    In 1978 I was living in Portland and I made a slow cross country drive back to visit family in my native NYC. I wanted to explore the northern USA and Glacier Park in particular. When I left Glacier, my next stop was Havre. I was exhausted and the weather was bleak - dark skies filled with dust from winds generated by a series of big storms which chased me out of the Rockies all the way to Havre...it was like driving around Phoenix during the summer monsoons in the dust storms. I didn't get to walk around because of the extreme weather, but the town seemed generally horrific viewed through the filters that the stormy weather created. It seemed like a perfect location for a sequel to "Night of the Living Dead". It looks much better and sturdier and certifiably free of hungry zombies now 45 years later through your lens. In the winter it is one of the coldest spots in the country. So, not really an inviting place -- but it put on its best face for you and your million + subs Mr. Briggs and that Brisket sandwich looked fine. With this exposure it will be on it's way to becoming the next boomtown in America's northwest!

    I took Amtrak from NY to Rochester. The Amtrak cars were new with blue and red upholstery and the dining car was sit down. No cloth napkins but really plush embossed paper napkins! Teenage me kept a few napkins along with a blue Amtrak swizzle stick. I can still remember the conductor bellow "Uuuuu-tica - the next stop is Utica". I was surprised that bankrupt Amtrak still had nice trains. Thanks for this trip, Briggs

Quick change on the Cascades to Portland. Snack bar on that train had the best clam chowder I've had this side of Boston. Those old Talgo trains are about to go. Little tattered here and there. We rode coach and the seats make into a very comfy sleeping spot. Two good nights of sleep. Daylight was snow from North Dakota and through Montana. Fun traveling with you.

    I feel like Havre as a town could just encourage as many multinational restaurants and eateries as possible and just enjoy the irony of being a world food capital in the middle of nowhere. Could help encourage some lowkey tourism and conferencing/teambuilding trips. Get a culinary college going while you're at it.

    great experience similar to riding the rails from Solana Beach to Houston, TX. Bottle of Scotch to compliment snacks & use as a frame for the desert, tumble weeds & mesquite landscape scenes. AMTRACK late😂,😂_waited over an hour outside of Houston to get into Houston Station.

    I don't get to travel much. Ap' s are not my thing. However I've been telling my husband I will travel for food. As I love cooking & it's always my love language. Thank you for this one . My husband says I should try a train trip.

    Just this last weekend we drove from PDX to Yakima for my mom's 92nd birthday. We took the WA side and it was lovely. We even stopped at Stonehenge in Maryhill. On the way back we went over White and took the back way around Rimrock, lot of snow in the shady parts of the road, but it was beautiful. I took the Empire Builder in a full room like yours back in 2000 from Edmonds, WA to Chicago. It was a great trip.

    Havre is known for having some of the coldest winter weather. Brutally cold place.

    I was excited to see you had a new video about trains on the channel. I normally just watch for state facts but I am also a huge train fan. You caught some cool ones in this video. Not sure what the make of the locomotive at 6:38 is but the Great Northern was a powerhouse. Amtrak inherited the Empire Builder route from the Great Northern in the early 1970s. the Great Northern later merged with the Burlington Route and Santa Fe to form the present day BNSF or Burlington, Northern and Santa Fe
