I’ve been fascinated with Shohei’s two-way play since he started playing as a professional player for Japanese Ham Fighters. Not only did he execute it well in Japan, but he also blows people minds in MLB. We can hardly think of anything he CANNOT do. Shohei’s got all the attractive elements for baseball fans and those who are not, resulting in plenty of discussions about his fabulous performance. He satisfies many people’s imagination of an amazing all-round baseball player. Ohtani has turned what used to be unthinkable (mostly in comic books or Hollywood movies) into reality. Monster home runs, incredible speed, and nasty strikeouts, you name it. How can you not get excited? Ohtani is likely to keep taking the baseball world by storm in 2022. So looking forward to it!!

Good to see Ohtani being MVP.
Ohtani is putting much better offensive numbers in MLB than he was in Japan. He changed his pitching a little since July and he became one of the best pitchers in AL. Don't forget, his elbow is still recovering from Tommy John surgery. It means he will get even better on his pitching next year. If Trout can stay healthy, Ohtani's batting average will get better. He will be a 1.000OPS hitter. MVP for 2 consecutive years is on lock.

Shohei is so versatile. He can contribute in so many ways. When he's hitting cools off, his pitching heats up, when all else fails he takes his walks and wreaks havoc on the basepath...truly fun to watch him always giving 100% on every play.

    FIELD OF DREAMS
Shohei Ohtani just crafted what many believe to be the greatest individual season ever played on the field of dreams. Arguably only Babe Ruth’s 1919 season rises to the level of what Ohtani accomplished this year in a game which is far more evolved today than it was a century ago.
Baseball more than any other sport is about numbers so let’s take a deep dive into Shohei’s 2021 numbers:
On the mound, Shohei tossed 130.1 innings over 23 starts, finishing the season with a 9-2 record, a 3.18 ERA, a 1.090 WHIP, a 141 ERA+ and 156 strikes outs to 44 walks. In the second half of the season, Shohei upped his pitching game to the tune of a 2.84 ERA and a 69/9 strikeouts-to-walks ratio over 63.1 innings. Shohei has five solid pitches at his disposal, including a fastball which tops out at over 100 MPH and a splitter which was the hardest pitch to hit in the majors this year (.087 batting average against and a 48.5% whiff rate)
At the plate, Shohei smacked 26 doubles, a league-leading 8 triples and 46 home runs to go along with 103 runs, 100 RBI and a 158 OPS+. And for good measure, Shohei swiped 26 bases. Can you imagine what these numbers would have looked like had Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon been in the lineup providing protection for Shohei all season long? We’d be looking at 50+ home runs, 125+ runs, 125+ RBI and an OPS well north of 1.000.
Other Shohei fun facts and firsts include:
    * At 6’4” he is as tall as the average NBA shooting guard
    * His 21 MPH sprint speed makes him as fast the NFL’s Lamar Jackson
    * His 28.8 feet-per-second sprint speed ranks him in the 92nd percentile of all major league players
    * His combined plate appearances as a pitcher and hitter totaled 1172
    * Ranked in the top ten in the AL in runs, home runs, OBP, SLG, OPS, walks, triples, extra-base hits, total bases and stolen bases
    * Hit as many home runs at the plate as earned runs allowed on the mound
    * Led the majors in Baseball-Reference WAR (9.0) and FanGraphs WAR (8.1)
    * Led the majors in Win Probability Added (WPA) and Run Expectancy Wins (REW), the two stats which measure clutch performance
    * Led the AL with a 1.555 OPS with runners in scoring position
    * Led the majors in barrel rate (minimum 250 balls in play) and finished in the 97th percentile or higher in average exit velocity, max exit velocity, hard-hit rate and walk rate
    * Lead the majors with 24 home runs with an exit velocity of 110+ mph
    * One of only two players in major league history (along with Willie Mays) with 45+ home runs, 20+ stolen bases and 6+ triples in the same season
    * First player in MLB history to make multiple pitching starts and lead the league in home runs at any point in the same season since Babe Ruth
    * First player in MLB history to throw 10+ pitches of 100 mph and hit 10+ home runs with an exit velocity of 110 mph in the same season
    * First player in MLB history to record 10 home runs and 100 strike outs in the same season
    * First player in MLB history with 10 pitching appearances and 20+ stolen bases in the same season
    * First player in MLB history to be selected to the all-star game as a pitcher and a hitter
    * Named Angels’ MVP and Best Pitcher
    * Won the Espy for Best MLB Player
    * Named MLBPA’s Player of the Year
    * Won the Commissioner’s Award (last awarded in 2014)
    * Selected as Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people of the year
Shohei is an elite pitcher, hitter and runner in an age of specialization but that is not why Shohei is the AL MVP. Shohei is the most valuable player in all of baseball because he is a unicorn doing unicorn things in a world in which unicorns exist only in the imagination of a child.
I give you Shohei Ohtani, 2021 American League MVP, and it ain’t even close 👏👏👏

I love Ohtani, he is a unicorn, if Japan had their own Captain America, Ohtani would be it, but he is an elite pitcher, not the best pitcher. As for his hitting, he strikes out alot, he hits into alot of double plays and he gets caught stealing alot, so he does hurt the Angels alot when they have runners in scoring position.

I understand totally what you meant and how you feel towards baseball which is dying in many countries, not only in the US. Many people, like you, had come back to watch the MLB games and many new audience who had never watched baseball before(like people from EU, South & Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, Australia, New Zealand, & Middle East) started watching MLB games or highlights, all because of Ohtani. I am sure there are more than 10 or 100 thousands of people only started to watch MLB games or highlights in 2021 because Ohtani's Games were too amazing and so interesting and incredibly exciting to watch. I knew hardly anything about MLB and baseball too before April 2021, now I got totally obsessed by watching Ohtani playing in the field and on the mound. I knew there were many many more people talking about the same experiences as what you had. So please don't bother about few people who don't shared your feelings; People in the world who watched Ohtani's Baseball Games all understanding very well your Joy 💕 during watching Ohtani plays in the Games😉. And let's look forwards for Ohtani's better performances in 2022 season as Ohtani has already started his training for next season even when he's off the season. Actually after the MVP announcement, he had one hour free time for easy work out lifting before he had a remote interview by Japanese reporters 😂. He said he didn't want to waste time for doing nothing in-between the schedules. He devotes all his time for Baseball because he truly loves💕 Baseball with all his heart 😊!

It could not have been otherwise. Ohtani was a no-doubter for the award, and for MVP of the entire sport. It was so historic and transcendent, the season he had, that it's still in the category of unbelievable--a dream we had but never woke up from. I don't know what he'll do next year, but the year he just had should satisfy us for at least another 100 years.

I have been following baseball for over 60 years. Nobody has come close to Ohtani's pitching and hitting prowess. No need to wish you could have seen Babe Ruth in his prime, just watch Shohei and know this is a once-in-a-lifetime (or two) spectacle. AND more than few MLB'ers could learn a thing or two from Ohtani about humility.

Shohei already equaled (possibly surpassed) Babe Ruth In terms of being an excellent two-way player. Babe Ruth only had success for ONE season (1919)! Before that, he was a great pitcher for 4 seasons. After that, he was a great hitter (15 seasons). Shohei may eventually need to give up pitching or hitting. Then we'll see how he stacks up!
