- Sea World Shamu Show 1988. This video showcases the birth of baby Shamu (aka Orkid), Kandu 5, and "Shamu" (played by Corky). This is a rare vintage piece of SeaWorld's history dating from way back in the day. I hope you enjoy this rare footage.
PS please never forget Kandu 5, she was an amazing whale who was full of personality and attitude (big attitude!). Even though she passed away well over two decades ago, she is still very much missed and never forgotten.
Kandu 5 died in a freak accident involving Corky. Corky is a very laid back and easy going whale; she is also very big, especially compared to the petite Kandu. On August 21, 1989 Kandu aggressively charged Corky, causing her jaw to fracture. Kandu died that same day. Corky became 11 month old Orkid's foster mom and later in life, her best friend. Orkid and Corky are still alive today, and reside at SeaWorld San Diego. The two adult female killer whales are still very close.
On a side note: in the audience, Joanna Kerns and her family. If you grew up in the Eighties, you might remember Joanna Kerns playing Maggie Seaver on the hit TV show Growing Pains. a quick frame only lasting a second or two in the beginning of the video shows her sitting in the audience. If you blinked, you probably missed it. =)

God, I was probably one of the little kids in the audience of this video. I remember hearing that Kandu V died, and bawling my eyes out, being completely crushed at the news that Baby Shamu's (Orkid) mom died. Probably the only time I ever watched the news voluntarily as a child. I remember it being reported as an accident, but now, after watching Blackfish and reading Death at Seaworld, I know that it was more than just an accident and something much uglier. I, and all my family, will never go to SeaWorld again.
imms r. Sadly, Kandu died due to an incident of attempting to rake Corky, showing dominance. Kandu missed Corky, ramming into a wall, and hitting an artery in her bottom jaw, causing her to bleed to death through her blowhole. Orkid was placed with Corky after Kandu died.

The violence between Corky and Kandu was not an accident. The violence is a result of the stresses of captivity and the fact that they're from different pods from different parts of the world.
I have done my research. I read Death at SeaWorld, as well as numerous scientific papers about Orcas after watching Blackfish. All my research just backed all the facts Blackfish presented, and highlighted the lies SeaWorld continues to spew.
By saying that it was in accident I mean: The violence itself not. But that she died was. For what I read she rammed into something else (walls?) instead of Corky because Corky moved or she missed or I do not know what reason. So in my opinion this counts as an accident. But as I wrote before: One that wouldn't have happenend in the wild.
I started reading books now too (since I read everything available in the internet). Did you read Beneath the surface (John Hargrove)?
the death of Kandu was caused by aggression. Orcas have killed each other in the wild before. Kandu was simply, a VERY defensive mother, and didn't have the best relationship with Corky. she tried to ram into Corky to get her away from Orkid and ended up hitting a wall. this is the ONLY time where a captive orca has died due to aggression. Corky has gone on to become a sort of foster mother to many whales. just a short list of these whales include:
Orkid, Sumar, Splash, Ikaika, Keet, Kalia, Makani, Amaya, Shouka, Nakai, Takara, Kohana, Keet and several others. Corky often helps first-time mothers, almost like a baby-sitting service. she knows how to care for a calf, and has repeatedly helped newer mums during births, and even stepped in to take care of calves after mothers have not known how to care for them, and provided help.
what happened to Kandu cannot be blamed on a single party, and cannot be called anything other than an accident.

@orkamad This was filmed in 1988 and was part of a TV special called Miracle Babies of Sea World. It was a Dick Clark Production and aired...maybe June 1989.
Shawna Karrasch I thought I recognize this video because somewhere how long my mini blank tapes of TV specials at my parents record it for me as a kid I think one of them has this same special on it so it's definitely ingrained in my memory

spacebug30 Corky actually hasn't lived here all her life, same with Ulises! She was captured and torn from her family back in the 60's (1980 for Ulises) and have lived their life in a tank ever since! :)

Corky was from "A" Pod. all the orcas alive when Corky where captured have now died. Corky is 53 now. it's likely she wouldn't even survive being transported to the ocean.

Well orcas aren't meant to have names in the first place, Seaworld is going to ran out of orcas and when that happens they're going to go after the poor belugas. Seaworld is a fucked up place, they hide stuff to the public, trainers are risking their life and orcas live as unhappy as an animal can get. I've seen orcas in the wild with their beautiful fins. This is sad and if you throw money for these shows then you don have any respect for these animals. And no, i am not an anti-cap, I just hate Seaworld (even after blackfish)

Andrea Paz even wild orcas all have names. All of them. Literally every orca on this planet has named. So, yes. Orcas are supposed to have names. Also, orcas even give each other names, so if we completely eliminated the factor of humans, we would STILL have all orcas with names. SeaWorld isn’t going to go after any belugas, I don’t know if you’ve noticed since your head is so far up your ass, but they’re slowly developing into a them park. SeaWorld doesn’t hide stuff from the public, they just don’t announce everything they do. You guys claim they hide stuff when they don’t talk about stuff that was public news 30 years ago. It’s not their fault they failed to treat their conditions. They need to let the killer whales go when it’s time. They cannot let the orcas go because they are adapted to the environment they are at now.

Corky is alive and going strong at 53 this year (54 by the end of the year) and she doesn't preform just for food. she gets food because she preforms, but that's not the reason she's done it. there was a report a few years back (Don't know how reliable it is) of a Shamu show at San Diego that got cancelled because of bad weather. but the whales continued to do their show routine, even though the trainers had moved to the back pool. Corky and several other orcas have been noted to enjoy kind of doing their own thing, preforming when they don't have to and such. (look up Makani on CZcams. he was preforming without trainer command at only a year old)

So weird how they use Kandu's real name, but still call Corky and Orkid by the stage name. Why not use all of their names...? Wouldn't that endear people to them more? SeaWorld never ceases to confuse me.
They'd probably call Kandu, Shamu as well, but it would confuse the kids.
SeaWorld has various stage names. these include "Kandu, Shamu, Baby Shamu Namu and Kanduke" Kandu, of course, already has her stage name. it would be to confusing to remember all the other names

I love the vintage footage. It’s so sad that most these calves died. The sad thing is you have to wait almost 2 years for them to be worn just for them to die, what a waste. I loved seeing the babies jump with their moms! But everyone in the crowd really thinks shamu is still alive? LOL she died in the 60s correct?

uhhhhh every animal dies of sickness, old age is not a reason for death, there's a disease hidden within the animal, that eventually lashes out at any time... so yeah of course they die of illness how else does one become unhealthy? Not to mention we haven't kept orcas in captivity for a full lifespan yet, so as of right now 53 is the age they can live in captivity, held by Corky II in San Diego aka the one in this video lmao
