Abandoned Kit Car Project - Good Idea?

  • 20 years in storage and this little car has never turned a wheel in anger!
This is the Tiger Avon Restoration story with Chris Hollier.
It is the sad story of a kit car project that never found it's way to completion.
In the last 20 years, this little Kit Car has had (at least) 2 owners who eventually gave up on their dreams.
Failure to complete a project is one of the unfortunate facts about building a kit car.
Many build dreams, for many reasons (including lack of planning) have ended up hanging on the wall of shame of their owner's shed. ... Just a bad dream waiting to be disposed of!
That's where Chris Hollier entered this story.
For a cheap price on FB marketplace Chris purchased this rolling chassis of a Kit.
Yes, the car lived a desolate, albeit well preserved, life.
Yes, it's yet another kit car for Chris! ... Like he really needs another.
He's built over 130 of them, manufactured his own Kit Car marque and has written countless stories about them as the editor of a kit car magazine.
... but what could you do? ... The price was absolutely right and Chris has a plan!
There are loads of kit car "Look at Me build" stories on CZcams but this one is a bit different.
... Sure there will be lots of "How To" and "Wrenching" but our series will also tell the "Why" part and hopefully help shed some light on the decision making process.

@@jtm2003dadHi,I sold it in 2007 (mine also was a early one) as a young family and sports cars don’t mix,but fast forward to covid and bored itchy fingers on the keyboard and I wondered if it was still around and after some looking I found it and bought it back! So its sat back in the garage I was built in 👍👍

Hopefully will show you can put a seven on the road for not a lot of money - Chris is aiming for £2k (appreciate he has a lot of parts and workshop etc etc)
Also then why various decisions and choices have been made but with options to upgrade power at a later stage.
It is also being built with IVA in mind - but again at a later stage, Hill climbs and track days first !!!
Hopefully will show you don't have to throw money at a kit car from the outset !
      That can come later !!!!!!!!

Interesting video for sure. But the cars that you appear to discuss on this channel are all very similar. I could be forgiven for thinking that there is only one type of kit car around these days, and that is a Seven look alike. Whilst I agree that these are true Kit Cars in the sense that they are very well engineered and complete kits that require some skills to be able to build them. There are other "kit" cars out there that are tremendously challenging to build and to make a half decent job of them. The RMB Gentry for one. (1980's) I completely agree with Chris about what an individuals attributes need to be to tackle one of these projects. However, those attributes go to a whole new level when you are faced with a project like a Gentry, especially when your quest is to build a true replica and so have to re-engineer 95% of what was just a body shell masquerading as a kit.

Hi and thanks for your comments.
We (at 7Spot) don’t get involved too much with what kit makes a great kit.
From our perspective, our work is not focussed on a marque, manufacturer or brand.
We like to think that the stuff we do is more to do with passion, no matter what level of build competency you possess.
There are kits being built all over the world and we love them all!
We have builders from everywhere building pretty much everything.
Just check out our playlists and you’ll see some amazing builders driven by a burning passion possessing unbelievable skill sets.

@@7Spot556 interesting that you mentioned Passion. For me Passion and obsession go hand in hand. I sometimes wish I hadn't set my bar so high with regards to creating a seriously good replica from the Gentry. Having been active in and around this group for many years, I have seen a few nice examples. But none have gone as far as I have. If I had set the bar lower I would have been driving my car around before now. 🤷‍♂️

It would be nice, if somebody could help out designing the suspension for example. I have just realized that my motion ratio is to low. I need to increase it, but space is an issue and I already made my upper control arms. This is just an example. How about designing the fuel system, coolant system, etc.
