    IMPORTANT: THERE ARE HEALTH AND SAFETY RISKS TO USING ALCOHOL AND ALCOHOL INK. AS I EXPLAIN IN THIS AND OTHER VIDEOS ABOUT THE TECHNIQUE DEMONSTRATED HERE, OUTDOORS IS THE PREFERRED PLACE TO DO THIS TECHNIQUE. FAILING THAT, INDOOR CONSIDERATIONS ARE ADEQUATE VENTILATION, PROPER USE AND STORAGE OF THE PRODUCTS (THEY ARE FLAMMABLE), AND POTENTIAL HEALTH RISKS TO OTHERS IN YOUR HOME, INCLUDING PETS. IT IS ADVISABLE TO WEAR PROTECTIVE BREATHING GEAR (VENTILATOR).

    ❤ this was gorgeous. My fav color is dark earthy greens/ (forest green/hunter green) but these are lovely. I clicked because the thumbnail-looked like a photograph to me. I have all the things to try this. (Except an air compressor.-but i have a decent camera tool for getting dust off..and it works well) im going to try my hand .. also appreciated all the technical tips. Instructions> it really was well done. Thanks so.much

      Thank you for the kind feedback, Maureen! The photo paper I use has no markings on the back (matte) side; although you can use both sides of photo quality paper, the glossy side is quite porous and will give an entirely different outcome as it's formulated to accept the ink quickly and have it dry quickly too. The matte side is coated and allows the ink to move around more freely before drying.

      Thank you for your feedback, Maureen! I use Yupo from time to time; however, it really benefits from having a light backing (I use white cardstock) to highlight the piece. The photo quality paper is versatile because both sides can be used for different techniques with alcohol ink (and on the front glossy side, with water-based inks too).

    • @TheTallestOne
      @TheTallestOne  Před 3 lety

      My apologies for the delay in responding to your very kind comment. To be honest, I don't pay much attention to the psi; I gauge the force of the air by the size of the substrate and how it feels when I blow the airbrush against my hand, plus the "weight" of the ink (some colors need more pushing than others). This was an 8.5" x 5.5" piece, so I'll guess it was between 20 and 30 psi. It was my pleasure and I'm so pleased you got helpful information from this tutorial.

    • @TheTallestOne
      @TheTallestOne  Před 3 lety

      Hello Christie and thank you for your kind comments. My apologies for the belated response. I don't really keep track of the psi when I'm working but will guess it was in the 20-25 range. I will often blow on my hand in a way that I think would be needed to move the ink, then replicate that on my hand with the brush until it *feels* right. Of course, it can be adjusted as needed because some ink needs more (or less) pressure to behave the way you want it to. I hope that helps.

  • @GR19611
    @GR19611 Před 5 lety +1

    Kathryn this is Beautiful. One technique I think you should try is to push the ink slowly forward while angling the air brush slightly backwards. This will give you more control and better shape.

    Hello, excellent work and very beautiful, I am a beginner and I love your style, I tried to make a similar one but when I try to move the paint with the straw it does not have the same fluids that I see in the video, I would like to ask you if you have to mix the previously paint with some alcohol to achieve that fluid?

    • @TheTallestOne
      @TheTallestOne  Před 4 lety

      Thank you, Guillermo. I did not mix anything with the ink except the clear alcohol (isopropyl). I dropped the alcohol onto the dried ink then blew the liquid. Are you able to access canned air an airbrush? It takes quite a bit of air flow to keep the ink moving -- and this ink dries so quickly.

    Another beautiful outcome with these flowers and alcohol ink Kathryn...just loving this technique. I need to get some supplies as I don’t have anything but acrylic inks? Does this technique work with acrylic inks? And also, why do you use the Matt side of the photo paper and not the shiny side? Is there a particular reason. Thanks for posting these videos and I love the fact that you take the time to explain your entire work. Beautiful outcome!

    • @TheTallestOne
      @TheTallestOne  Před 5 lety +1

      The only acrylics I've used are paints, but I don't think this technique would translate well -- if you try it, let me know how it works out. :) I use the matte side of photo quality paper because it's non-porous and allows the alcohol ink to move around a lot. The glossy side is formulated to accept inks and have them dry very quickly, which is ideal if you're printing photos and want them crisp looking... not so much for this technique.

      @Katerina-vm2ok Před 5 lety +1

    • @kathrynsalamanchuk9583
      @kathrynsalamanchuk9583 Před 2 lety

      Hi Jenn. I don’t pay attention to the specific setting per se; my method is to adjust the air output from the airbrush until it feels right against my palm. Each ink color has a different viscosity and larger pieces require more air flow to move the ink, so I find it easiest to adjust as I work.

    • @TheTallestOne
      @TheTallestOne  Před 3 lety

      My apologies for the belated response, Lyn. I don't have a "standard" psi setting for my work. It varies depending on what I need to make the ink move the way I need it to. For example, I've done pieces with a single flower bloom on a 12" x 12" substrate which means the petals and leaves are quite large. To get a consistent, smooth flow of ink to form such a large petal requires a higher psi. To be honest, I don't look at the gauge number as much as I pay attention to how the air feels (I aim the airbrush at my other hand to tell myself whether it will serve the purpose -- and adjust, as needed, while I'm working on the piece). I'm going to guess that, for this piece, the psi was in the neighbourhood of 20-25.
