    Pretty much immediately after I started reading Vinland Saga (which was a few months ago at this point) I knew I wanted to do something like this. It's not every day I get to use anime/manga as a vehicle to flex the history knowledge I've spent thousands of dollars/pounds sharpening, haha. In any case, hope you learn some fun history facts from this!

    Since the moment I saw the vikings didn't have horns, I knew this was gonna be very accurate. And in the latest arc, Makoto Yukimura actually took the time to investigate about the indigenous language.

    Vinland Saga is one of the best shows I have ever seen, and is far more historically accurate and respectful than shows like Vikings.
    It's also cool that you love Medieval history. My favorite era of history is Late Medieval Europe into The Tudor Era. I cringe with how little knowledge people actually have of those times and how much mis information there is.

    • @Ildskalli
      @Ildskalli Před rokem +4

      "Vikings" plays veeery loosely with Norse history and culture, but it's still a massive upgrade over the big studio garbage that was being pumped out not that long ago. Rule of Cool is behind like 90% of the production/writing decisions behind it, but they at least made an effort to consult sources and experts. Just remember "The 13th Warrior" 😖

    • @chrismic8087
      @chrismic8087 Před rokem +8

      Viking series and stuff often is all about war and violence and conquest. Truly, the era was abundant with them, but Vinland Saga chooses to tell a story about the meaning of peace in a period where war is the lifeblood of the times. And that's very special, I feel. One of the best manga I've read for sure

    • @seanmcloughlin5983
      @seanmcloughlin5983 Před rokem +2

      @@Ildskalli also to be fair on it our knowledge of the Vikings and Norse culture is very limited and very biased
      Half the characters may not have even existed so it’s not that big a deal if they have them doing things later Vikings did.

    • @AD-lh3jk
      @AD-lh3jk Před rokem +1

      Before I committed myself to Vinland Saga S2 since I heard it’s going to be more introspective & thought provoking than a simple battle & fighting story, I managed to heard of Planetes and found a way to watch the anime adaptation
      And damn, it was made in the early ‘00s and despite the more anachronistic story elements & archetypes that was more apparent in the first few episodes, by around he 5th episode I was almost moved to tears. And by the end I’m convinced Makoto Yukimura is a genius storyteller who not only knows how to write a story well, but also how he manages to almost undoubtedly seamlessly weave them with important societal aspects about the human condition (as well as of course his adaptations’ collaborators)
      His development of themes throughout a story is one of, if not straight up *the* best I’ve ever experienced. He displays a breadth of understanding about the various aspects of human life in both micro & macro sense, explores almost every one with sufficient enough depth while keeping it relevant to the main plot. And this’ further apparent in Vinland Saga’s S2
      The only thing that irks me about him is how humble he is. As a practitioner of fiction myself (have studied and worked in film & advertising), I know full well what he & his collaborators did are no small feat whatsoever
      And I know I may sound very hyperbolic here, but imho their names & works deserved to be remembered for the ages

    @CraftsmanOfAwsomenes Před rokem +27

    One of the main things I appreciate about it is it's one of the only recent pieces of modern viking media that doesn't dip super hard into ahistorical symbolism associated with vikings because of Romanticism like "magical staves" from 17th century icelandic grimoires or everyone dressing up like they're in a BDSM themed metal band using an aesthetic popularized by Manowar album covers which is ubiquitous in games like Assassin's Creed Valhalla or in shows like History channel's Vikings.

    You might know this or not but a small thing about the hygiene(I guess...):
    Over here(Sweden) most the days of the week are named after a god, Like Tuesday(Tisdag) is named after Tyr the god of justice and Thursday (Torsdag) is named after Thor the god of thunder.
    Anyway what I'm getting at is that there are 3 days in the week not named after gods, Måndag(Monday), Lördag(Saturday), and Söndag(Sunday).
    Like in english Monday and Sunday are both Moon day and Sun day respectively, but Saturday is different.
    The "lör" in Lördag(Saturday) comes from the ye' Old Norse word "Laug" and in turn ye' old swedish "Løgha"(in more modern swedish it's 'Löga'), And "Löga" means to wash or to bath!
    So Saturday was/is bath day!
    It was so important that it got its own day!

    I love Vinland Saga. I never expected a Manga set partly in my home country. When one of the characters said "I have a plan. We must go to Odense." I was estatic! I've lived there! I've also visited Jelling, so I can add my own small detail: Jelling has no coast like in the manga. It's nowhere near a body of water large enough for boats like we see depicted. It did have a large bridge, but that was not near the town centre, but some miles outside the city.

    One of the underrated things i love about vinland saga is how much the background work of women is presant- especially weaving and spinning! People dont realise but before mechanical looms all cloth was made by the labour intensive (womens work) of weaving and spinning by hand. The labour required was constant, and had an enormous impact on both the family and the overal economy. Despite the prologue arcs focus on war, one of the striking things about the way women are portrayed is that looms and spinning wheels or hand spinners are rarely far away. Its treated as a background detail, but it really shows his care for the craft- because most shows and comics dont bother, and just think of medieval life as modern life woth funny clothes. Or worse- they treat fabric craft as a stand in for 'frivolous womens work' thats beneath the main characters notice or abilities (when actually your brave warriors would all be dying of frost bite without the women spinning and weaving at the looms).
    Idk, it just makes the world feel so much more real and cohesive, because no matter how powerfull a main character is the seeds still need to be sown, grain harvested and ground into flour, and the wool spun and woven into cloth. Hell, that the point of the entire second half of the story- that for all the war and glory surrounding the soldiers, thet are nothing but a nasty disruption to the neccersary work of actually surviving and living in the world day to day. And even right at the begining the work of living is always present and shaping the story. Its great.
